Spray Controls , Tarweed, College j Workers Report i Proper timing of 2,4-D spray will give good control of tarweed, main weed menance to eastern Oregon wheatlands, with little or no damage to grain plants, ac cording t0 Oregon State college researchers. W. R. Furtick, OSC farm crops department, reported the findings at the recent Oregon Weed con ference in Portland. He recom mended spraying after wheat has three or more tillers and before tarweed gets out of the rosette stage, normally in March. Recommended dosage is three- fourths to one pound of either amine or ester forms of 2,4-D per acre mixed with enough water to give coverage. Amine 2,4-D proved less effective than the ester type once tarweew had passed the roselta stage. Results are based on two-year trials by OSC's Pendleton branch experi ment station on farms in seven Columbia Basin counties. The conference recommended 1955 legislative appropriation of funds to control ragweed, the hay feed weed that has a toe-hold In scattered areas of Oregon with heaviest infestations in the Mil ton -Freewater area and Jose phine county. Baker and Morrow are also among the 12 Oregon counties now reporting ragweed. Hugh Taylor, state department of agriculture, told conference delegates that effective control of ragweed' with 2.4-D has been ruled out in the Milton-Freewater area because" of the hormone .sprays, threat to horticulture crops. Dr. Hasold Erickson, state health officer, estimates that 10 percent of Oregon's $150 million annual tourist trade results from persons coming here to escape the hay fever season in other parts of the nation. Rex Warren, OSC farm crops specialist and conference secre tary, said both common and giant ragweed are easily killed with 2.4-D from the time they emerge about May 1 until late summer pollen-shedding season. Other weeds that may be brot under control as a result of OSC research include Canada thistle, quackgrass, hurd-to-kill brush species, and both grasses and broadleaf weeds in alfalfa. Dave Chilcote, farm crop researcher, based the report on one-year trials with four herbicides not yet released to the public, o OSC Extension Leader Wins National Award A ruby award for distinguished service in agriculture and rural life has been given Frank L. Ballard, associate director of the agricultural extension service at Oregon State college. The award is presented an nually to one member of Epsilon Sigma Phi, national honorary ex tension organization. Selection is made by vote of the frater nity's 51 Idaho chapters in this country, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Except for a period in 1940-41 when he was president of OSC, Ballard has been with the Ore gon extension service since 1917. After graduating from OSC in 1916, he became extension spec ialist in rural organization and agricultural economics. He was later promoted to assistant county agent leader, then to county agent leader, vice director and to his present position in 1945. Since 1933 he has served on many states and national com mittees concerned with bettering agriculture and rural life. Ballard is also a frequent con tributor to many local, regional and national farm publications. He has authorized one book, "The Spirit and Phylosophy of Exten sion Work", published in 1952 by the U.
