NYS, Attorney for Administratrix. 32-36c 3( McKAY VISITS SALEM "How can some people say this election was a crack at our power policy when in the states of Ore gon, Washington, Nevada, and California when almost all the candidates supporting that pol icy won re-election?", said Secre tary of Interior Douglas McKay in Salem Sunday when discussing the recent election. "That doesn't indicate repudi ation to me", he added. The Secretary said the adminis tration plans no major changes in its power program despite slight Democratic majorities in Congress. McKay came to Salem between official commitments to spend the day with his daughters and grandchildren. He and Mrs. Mc Kay will be in Salem in Decem ber to spend Christmas. RECOUNT IMPROBABLE Cordon workers are trying to get a statewide recount of the Neuberger-Cordon vote for the U. S. Senate. So far they lack the necessary evidence to start the required suits which are re quired in each of the 36 counties. "Fraud or error must be shown when the looser goes into court demanding a recount.", says David O'Hara, head of the state Eiection Division. The official count will be an nounced about December 1. Any suits demanding a recount would have to be filed by December 3. Senator Guy Cordon won't give' up. Unseasoned to defeat he reckons if what happened in Linn County were to happen in 28 other counties he would win, official count in Linn shaved 72 votes from Senator Richard Neu berger's lead. j TAX REFUNDS REFUSED I Now anything can happen. A personal income tax refund check for $15 was returned to the State Tax Commission in Salem this week by a Portland man and wife with the following let ter: "With all deference to the State Tax Commission in the in- terest of a balanced budget we j indorse this check back to the i state." ED GEARY 1955 SPEAKER There is not a more faithful Republican in Oregon than Ed Geary, Klamath County rancher but It took the votes of Democrats up in La Grande to make him Speaker of the House. Union and Wallowa County Democrats elect- ted Harry L. Wells representor ve defeating David Baum who claimed 40 of the 60 members of the House had pledged to vote for him for speaker. Geary, in Salem this week to preside over the legislative in terim committee on highways, announced that he has more than the 31 votes necessary to make him speaker. As a member of the House since 1919, Geary has had a lead er in taxation and highway legis lation in the three past sessions and was prominently mentioned tor high state office in two cam paigns. SAFETY CONFERENCE DATED The governor's sixth annual Safety Conference will be held in Portland November 1819 The conference will include sections on logging, sawmilling, plywood, log hauling, petroleum, chemical, government, automo tive, food processing and utili ties. UNEMPLOYMENT IN OREGON There were 30,400 Jobless per sons in Oregon in October com pared with 26,000 a year ago. The State Unemployment Com-1 pensation Commission said that half of the jobless were in the Portland area. Payments to the jobless totaled $1,068,935 in October. That was slightly less than in September, but was 19 per cent more than a year ago. Payments in the first ten months this year totaled $20,406, 950, just a shade less than the record set for the entire year of 1950. VOTING GADGET NIXED A voter in Lane county refused to vote by the voting machine so judges reportedly gave him a pencil and a ballot. Afterwards it occurred to him that his was the only paper ballot cast and all election clerks knew just how he voted. WHAT, MORE GAME FISH? The stream clearance and trash fish riddance programs recently adopted by the State Game Com mission are producing results. Salmon and steelhead are show ing up in places they haven't been seen for some time. In recent months streams such as the Siletz, Yachats, Yaquina, Salmon and Lewis and Clarke on the coast have undergone stream clearance operations with the logging industry cooperating wholeheartedly! Green, Hepp ner, Oregon, recently spent a seven-day rest and recreation leave from his unit in Korea at Camp Hakata, on Japan's south, ernmost island of Kyushu. Sight seeing and extensive en tertainment facilities at the camp provided him with a welcome break in the task of maintaining security on the Korean penin ed to change the center lines of highways from the present yel low to white. STATE BAGS 35 BEARS State predatory hunters killed 35 bears last month and 13 were from timber holdings of the CrownZellerbach on Tillamook bum where heavy tree damage has occurred. Other predatory animals taken include 795 coyotes, 306 bobcats, 21 fox and one mountain lion. Miscellaneous catches Included 129 badgers, 30 skunks, raccoons and 283 porcupines. The highest take was in Mai- heuer County for 326, and second was Lake County with 143. Forty-six hunters worked at the top of the hunting season. DRUNK DRIVING INCREASES Oregon State Police arrested 143 persons for drunken driving according to the last monthly re port. This is an increase of 25 per cent over the previous month. Fines assessed totaled $19,918, down about 12 per cent from the previous month. There were 571 arrests for vio lation of the basic rule and 101 arrests for reckless driving.
