SURPLUS FUNDS LOW
There is little chance of the
1955 legislature being tabbed a
spendthrift session.
They won't be having that kind
of money to appropriate.
State Budget Director La Verne
Young estimated this week that
there will be less than $6,000,000
of surplus state funds available
at the end of the current bien
nium. Two years ago the amount was
$30,000,000.
First financial requests of state
departments and institutions for
the next biennium were given
to Young last week. No time will
be lost, Young declared, In pre
paring the state budget for the
1955-56 biennium so it may be
printed and distributed among
legislators immediately after
they ure elected in November.
The Oregon system of higher
education has estimated the cost
of the first installment of their
building program for the bien
nium to be $7,590,000,

happy in their present building.
It is forever springing leaks in

PROPERTY OWNERS WIN
Areas added to the property of
a rigedian owner by a change
of the channel of a river becomes
the property of the owner, the
Oregon Supreme court ruled this
week.
In a suit directed against
David C. Towne and others who
had leased land from the State
Land Board for a duck blind the
finding of a lower court was sus
tained. The owners had sued to
enjoin the defendant from tres
passing on the property claimed
by the State of Oregon.
Associate Justice George Ross
man, who wrote the opinion, held
that the evidence clearly indi
cated that the added land was
the result of gradual accretion
and that such land would there
fore accrue to the plaintiffs.
STATE FAIR TOPS
The spread of the variety and
quality of entertainment offered
at the Oregon State Fair has been
kept up with the increased agri
cultural, horticultural, livestock
and general exhibits entered this
year.
And there are new and renewed
features.

trotters are back on the racing

Every agricultural county in
the country has such a committee
to help the farmers Home Admin

the agency's loan policies to local
conditions, including farm credit
needs.
The Farmers Home Adminis

or to construct or repair farm
water facilities needed for profit
able operation. Special livestock
loans are made where temporary
credit is needed to enable the
operator to remain in operation.
The agency also makes emer

that have been designated by the
secretary of agriculture as areas
where emergency credit is needed.
However, the agency does not
make loans of any type to any
applicant whose needs can be
handled by other credit sources.

GROUP INSURANCE OUT
The state board of control pul
led the health and accident in
surance rug out from under 2000
state workers last week. Policies
are due to expire September 1.
About two years ago the board
contracted with the Lincoln Life
Insurance Company for group in
surance optional with individuals
with premium payments with
held from the paychecks of the
workers.
The plan immediately became
very popular and the company
drew considerable other business
from the deal.
The contract was cancelled as a
result of an opinion by Attorney
General Robert Y. Thornton that
the state board had no authority
to enter into a contract with the
insurance company.

Fhe hit thafs changing the sales standings puts you
way ahead 3 ways
Tins year Buick has done what no other car
has done in more than a generation.
This year Buick has moved into the lofty circle
of America's three top sales leaders a circle
once dominated only by the so-called "low-price
three." For today, Buick is outselling all other
cars in the nation except two of these "low-price
three" And each new month's sales figures
strengthen Buick's new sales leadership.
You can't do better if you want the best buy
for your new-car money than to look into the
soaring success that is Buick today. You'll find
this glamorous new-day beauty puts you way
ahead in three important ways-that's for sure.
So drop in on us tomorrow at the latest and
see for yourself that Buick is the buy of the year,
hands down.
1. More new car for your money
Buick prices start close to the lowest just
a few dollars above those of the traditional
"low-price three." But those few more
dollars for a Buick get you a lot more auto
mobile more room, more comfort, more
V8 power, more ride steadiness, more solid
durability-plus the advanced "tomorrow"
styling that has taken the country by storm.
2. More money for your present car
With our great and growing sales volume,
we can offer you a bigger trade-in allow
ance on your present car when you buy'a
new Buick. After all, the more new cars we
sell, the better deal we can make with you.
So you get the benefit of our great success
in the form of a higher trade-in allowance.
3. More dollars when you trade
Because Buick's broad panoramic wind
shield has started a whole new styling
trend, you can be sure that today's Buick
will keep its modern look for years to come.
So you are assured of a higher resale figure
when yog trade it in later on.
