Heppner Gazette Times, Thursday, August 5, 1954 80 Men Control Grass Fire in Monument By Millie Wilson Assistant District Fire Warden, Henry Martin, reports only one major fire this week. It was a prass fire on the Tom Campbell place on Rudio covering 160 acres. 80 men were employed before It was brought under control. It was caused by a blast put off by the Power Line Construction Co. They are a sub contractor of the R. E. A. Ruth Swick of Portland came by bus Sunday to spend several days visiting friends In Monument. She stayed Sunday night with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gassner. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cork enter tained with a party July 30th, honoring Roy Cork on his birth day. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cork, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cork, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Capon and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hooker. Films were shown for entertainment. Mr. and Mrs. Allen Peck (nee Eleanor Glaekfe) have purchased a new home In the Estacada dis trict. It is a small acreage. They will move from Sweet Home on September 1st. Rev. and Mrs. Paul Kimmell returned from attending meetings in Portland last Saturday. The Chuck Vandetta children are enjoying a visit from their cousins, Joan and Sherry Van detta of Portland. They came from Portland with Mrs. Chuck Vandetta. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Round and children of Dayville spent Saturday in Monument visiting Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Vandetta. They made the trip to get their son, Davie who had spent the week with Andy Vandetta. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Wheeler left this week for their home in Cuba, ! and the first granddaughter of i Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Owings. Mr. and Mrs. Mead Gilman had Mrs. Gilman's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Foss of Hermiston as guests for dinner on Sunday. Charles (Bucky) Morris, wife and son of Corvallis, called early Sunday morning at the home of Mr. Morris' uncle and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cork. They were on their way to Wallowa in the in terest of his work. The bridal shower sponsored by Mrs. Lois Bleakman, Mrs. Darlene Boyer. Mrs. Ouida Cork and Mrs. Edna Moore on Sunday afternoon honoring Janet Engle, bride elect was attended by thirty-one. The bride elect, Janet Engle was honored by having both her mother and grandmother at the shower. Many sent presents that could not attend. Games were played and Ossie Engle, mother of the bride elect won first place Second prize was won by Miss Ramona Hooker. Refreshments of watermelon and punch were ser ved. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Gilman of Heppner spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Willard Gilman. Willard is a nephew of Petes. Mr. and Mrs. Rho Bleakman were oveninght guests of Mr. Bleakman's sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Hynds on July 24th. On the 25th they drove to Hermiston where they visited Mr. Bleakman's uncle, Bert Bleak man, who is quite ill. They re turned home Sunday night. Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Hinton took the four girls from the Presbyter ian church to the church summer school at Anthony Lake. The girls were Mirinda Musgrave, Sharon Hinton, Theo Vandetta and Caro lyn Martin. They left Saturday July 30th. Laura Lee and Yvonne Bleak man spent last week in Mt. Ver non with their grandparents, Mr and Mrs. Dave Musgrave. Mrs. Musgrave took them to Joaquin Miller resort swimming pool for the lessons given there. Mr. and Mrs. Ingwald Dunrud of Molalla spent Friday and Sat urdav at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Engle on Cottonwood The Dunrud's were on their re turn trip from a vacation spent in Canada Miss Jo Ann Stimpson of Long Creek was a visitor at the Bob Gienger home on Cottonwood last week. 'Llovd and Irene Osborn attend ed a birthday dinner at Lehman Snrincs on Sunday, honoring Alton McBride of Long Creek Mr. and Mrs. Fred Page drove to Osweeo this week to meet Mrs. Pace's son. Jack Newcomb of Alaska. He flew down and could only stay for one day, so they all met in Oswego. He was there on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Page took two days for the drive to Oswego. Bernie Alston, the cattle buyer from Bend stayed In Monument Tuesday night. He purchased cattle from Leo Flower and Fred Shank. Kimmell conducted swim ming lessons again on Wednes day and Thursday. Their swim ming was on the Slim Owing's ranch. Mrs. Wave Jackson's daughter, Mrs. Thelma Maley of Condon, chased from Mr. and Mrs. Clay Riley. Bub and Darlene Boyer were attending to matters of business in Prineville on Tuesday. Mr. Boyer who has been ill for the past two weeks, consulted his doctor while in -Prineville. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Barnard ot and her son Hugh Jackson came! Monument and Mrs. Katie Hinton for her last Wednesday to see thei Hamnton drove to La Grande new home of Mr. and Mrs. Loien i )ast Saturday to visit Mrs. Hin Maley. Hugh Jackson is spend ing his furlough by helping his brother-in-law, Loren Maley in harvest. Hugh brought his mo ther home last Sunday. Mrs. Ida Bleakman stayed with Mrs. Geor giana Capon while Mrs. Jackson was away. Word has been received by relatives in Monument of the birth of a baby boy born July 20th to Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Sweek in Springfield. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Holmes are the proud parents of a baby girl born July 27th in the Prineville nsnital. It is the Holmes' third h.'.t thPir first flnuchter. Mr. Peterman is attending East ern Oregon College at La Grande. They also visited Mr. and Mrs. John Simas. Mr. and Mrs. Sim Andrus spent last week attending to matters of business in Portland. Their two sons staved with Mrs. Andrus' grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Durst. Mrs. Floyd Fergerson of Day ville visited with Mr. Fergerson's mother, Mrs. Mamie Fergerson last Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. KMncaid and son Lake. They returned Sunday evening. Rev. and Mrs. Paul Kimmell had as their guests last week, Mrs. Kimmell's sister, husband and children, Mr. and Mrs. Don ald Ramseyer, Michael and Rod ney. They came from Canaga. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Leathers and children Deeanna and Buzzie spent one day last week attend ing to matters of business in Bend. Mr. and Mrs. Clay Riley had the moving van at their place on July 30th to move their house hold goods to their new 'borne near Estacada. The M. M. M. club presented Daisy Riley with a small token of remembrance before she moved to Estacada. Mrs. Riley has been a faithful worker in the club ac tivities ever since she became a member years ago. George Strange of Portland is visiting his brother Bruce Strange and family. From here he will go to Arkansas, where he recently purchased a farm. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Holmes entertained Thursday with a lawn luncheon, honoring Man fred Lukas, who left Friday for Hillsboro to' join another ex change student for the trip to New York where they will sail August 12 for Germany. Those present besides Mr. and Mrs. Holmes and Manfred were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Roach, Miss Joan and Brownie, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Holmes and son, Mrs. Grace Duncan and daughter, Mrs. Fran ces Leathers, Mrs. Dillie Leathers. Mrs. Grace Duncan and Mrs. Frances Leathers of Portland are here visiting their mother, Dillie Leathers, their brother Wayne Leathers, wife and children and their sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Roach, Miss Joan Roach and Brownie. Mr. and Mrs. Theron King and son Earl Frank left Friday fori Portland where they will Join Don and Delia Van Buskerk for a ten day trip into Canada. Mrs. Erhart has been helping Mrs. Dilla Mantis in the post office this week. Darrell Lear and Miss Thela Murry spent Saturday in John Day. Darrell had some work done on his car. Mr. and Mrs. Earnie Moline have as their guests, Mr. Moline's niece, Mrs. Carrie Harper and daughter Irene of San Francisco. They have been here for the past two weeks. Mrs. Wave Jackson was pleas antly surprised when her son Jack Flowers and family of North Powder spent Friday with her. lone New! Dr. and Mrs. Chaster L.
