Dan Barlow Honored On 84th Birthday A birthday dinner was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Lutkins at lone honoring the 84th birthday of Dan Barlow. Dinner was served to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Shunk and son of Heppner, Mr. and Mrs. R. D. All stott, Sr. and daughter, lone; Mr. and Mrs. Everett Barlow and son, Lexington; Alvin Barlow and Joe Barlow, lone; Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Allstott, Jr., Hermiston; Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Jackson, Gresham; Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Allstott, lone; the guest of honor and the host and hostess. The birthday cake was baked by Mrs. Everett Barlow. Sorority Entertains With Swimming Party The Beta Omego chapter of Ep silon Sigma Alpha entertained their husbands and children with a swimming party at the lone pool Saturday evening. About 25 enjoyed a weiner roast following the swimming. Weiners, buns, marshmallows, coffee and punch were served. Breakfast Given For Out Of Town Guests Mrs. W. O. George entertained Friday morning with a breakfast at her home for Mrs. Arthur Buf ton of Dearborn, Michigan; Mrs. Tom Toolson, Camas, Wash.; Mrs. Margaret Rugg and Mrs. Eva Arthur of Lakeview, Oregon, Mrs. Mary Van Stevens and the hostess. Carters Entertain With Dinner Party Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Carter enter tained with a dinner party Satur day evening. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. H. J. 'miletun, Oregon Phone 338 Pinochle Club Meets At Evans Home Friday Mrs. Earl Evans entertained the Pinochle club at her home Friday afternoon with a one o'clock des sert. Those present were Mesdames Ed LaTrace, Fred Mankin, Walter Becket, Bob Lowe, Roy Orwick, Ben Anderson, Max Harris and the hostess. Mrs. Harris held high score, Mrs. LaTrace second high and Mrs. Lowe received the consola tion. Mrs. Mankin was given a prize for holding 1500 trump. n Picnic Held at Blake Cabin For Tuckers Mr. and Mrs. Earle Blake's mountain cabin was the scene of a no-host picnic Sunday, in honor of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Tucker of Wishram, Washington. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Blake, Mr. and Mrs. Harlan McCurdy, Mr. and Mrs. Harlan McCurdy, Jr. and family, Mr. and Mrs. Earle Blake, Beverly and Barbara Blake and the guests of honor. METHODIST CHURCH Rev. Lester Boulden, who is at tending summer school in Minne sota, will not be back to fill the pulpit Sunday July 25. Plans For New Monument Phone Line Discussed By Millie Wlson A telephone meeting was held at the Grange hall July 12 to dis cuss ways and means of a new telephone line for Monument. Bob Damon, sheriff of Grant County met with the Co-op's Board of Di rectors earlier in the clay, but no decision was reached, but expect ed a State Utilities representa tive to meet and discuss the mat ter at an early date. This is a much needed project and the peo ple as a w hole were well pleased that a start has been made. Mr. and Mrs. Clay Riley sold their home last Monday to Mr. and Mrs. Fred McWillis of Red mond. They also sold three other houses to the McWillis'. This is the largest property sale Monument has had for several years. Mr. and Mrs. Clay Riley drove to Estacada last Wednes day and bought a 33 acreage. They expect to move by August 1st. A group of young people met at the George Legler place last Thursday evening. Several of the young folks took weiners to roast on the sandbar near the swim ming hole. Mrs. Eunice Round and Mrs. Lelia Sloan spent a few days visiting relatives in and near IONE COMMUNITY CHURCH Rev. Earl L. Soward will give the 11 o'clock service Sunday. rf' Portland. Mrs. Round visited her brothers Charles and Ernest Bronson and Mrs. Sloan visited her sister, Clarrissa Cork in Port land. The ladies of the First Presby terian church held their regular monthly meeting July 13th at the home of Ivy Barnard. There were thirteen members present and three visitors, who were Lois Bleakman, Vivian Andrus and Iris Kincaid. The next meeting will be at the home of Grace Stirritt with Goldie Round as co hostess. Mrs. Ida Bleakman is home from a months visit in Washing ton. A farewell party will be given at the Grange hall for Manfred Lukas, a German Exchange stu dent who has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Roach. He will leave about August 1st. Square dancing will form the en tertainment for the party. July 17th a pie social was held at the Grange hall to raise money to send four children to Church Summer School at An thony Lake. Mrs. Dillie Leathers, who had been visiting her daughter Grace and son Carl in Tortland, return ed home Thursday with Ab Gates and Henry Cupper, who were In Portland after a truck load of ma terial for the Cupper's new home. Brownie Roach is helping his uncle Fred Roach with his haying in the Ritter area. Mrs. Doris Kingman and her mother, Mrs. Martha Matteson were attending to matters of busi ness in Heppner on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Homer E. Wil liams and daughters, Joyce and Linda Sue were overnight guests of Mrs. Millie Wilson Saturday night. They came for Mr. Wil liam's (laughters, Jeannie and Deanna who will spend a month with their father. Mr. and Mrs. Steve Kincaid and son Tommy spent the weekend near Mt. Vernon at the home of Mr. Kincaid's mother. j Bob Welty, engineer for the I Columbia Power Co-op, from The Dalles spent Thursday in Monu , ment. From here he went to The , Dalles. I Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Boyer 1 drove to Prineville July 12th i where Mr. Boyer had a medical checkup. It was found he had a ! viris infection and a congested ! lung. They decided on Wednes ! day to go to Salem for a further checkup. While in Salem they were guests of Mr. Boyer's sister, Mrs. Nona Copeland. I Mrs. Eunice Round and sons, Mamie Fergerson and Grace Stir ritt drove to Long Creek on Mon day to get a new pressure pump for Mrs. Ferguson. George Stir ritt and Maynard Hamilton in stalled it for her. Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Hinton and daughters, Sharon and Mary Ella, Mr. and Mrs. George Stirritt and Laura Lee Shank all had a picnic at the Fred Shank ranch on Cot tonwood last Sunday July 11th. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Stirrit, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Mascall of Day ville were callers at the George Stirritt home last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. George Capon were attending to matters of busi ness in Heppner July 14th. Then on July 15 Mrs. Capon and her sister, Mrs. Trclla Boggs drove to Bend to meet their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rex Sweek, who have been visiting their son, Wesley in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Matteson of Heppner were business visitors in Monument last Sunday.
