Lundell was fleeted president of the Garden club at a meeting at the Leonard Carlson home Tuesday May 11. Other officers elected were Mrs Walter Dohyns, vice president; Mrs William Rawlins, secretary, and Mrs, Edith Nichoson, treasur er. Mrs. Lundell and Mrs. Kaw lins were elected to go as dele gales to the regional and state convention in Ashland beginning June Gth. Mrs. Dohyns and Mrs. Nichoson were chosen as alter nates. A committee was appointed to see about erecting the fence around the city park. Arborvitae and pink locust have been plant ed in the park. Samples of Pilaf a new wheat product, was on dis play. These samples will be taken to the convention as favors. The next meeting will be a gar den tour, the date w.ill be an nounced later. Mrs. Ktta Huston received the door prize. The hos tesses were Mrs. Carlson, Mrs. Annie Lindstrom and Mrs. Harry Yarnell. Mrs. Monetta Aldrich and Mrs. Dale Ray are new members of the club. F. convention in Grants Pass this week as a delegate from the Morgan lodge. High school students from here who participated in the Music of May festival in Forest Grove last week were Larry Rietmann, Janet Huwton, Dick Ekstrom, Dennis Swanson and Malcolm McKinney. They played in the band there which was led by Charles E. Dietz who is the music teacher in Pacific University and also, has a position with the Portland Sym phony orchestra. Jotin tsarneu led the orchestra He plays on the Standard hour and is director of opera at San Francisco and Los Angeles. The chorus was led by Wayne Hertz who is chairman of the Division of Music at Klines- burg, Wash. This festival was May 13, 14 and 1.) and a record broadcast will be given through the facili ties of Kl'OJ Portland and Mutual Don Lee network Saturday May 22 at 7 p. rn. Standard time. Mrs. Garland Swanson and Mi's Lena Miller, also attended the festival. The Missionaries of the Hepp ner churches and ihe Valby Luth eran chun h met at the Valby church in Gooseberry Sunday with around 100 present. Reports were eiven bv the different churches. Visitors at the Delia Corson home from ileppner were Mrs. Anne Smouse, Mrs. Anna Q. Thomson, Mrs. Lucille Owens and Miss Opal Briggs. They all at tended the Missionary meeting at Ihe Valby church in the after noon. Mrs. Waller Dobyns left Thurs day of last week for lioseburg when1 she will visit her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Tad llardesty. Mrs. Winnie inter and son, William anil Miss Evelyn Cowan were Pendleton visitors Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Lois Carlson en tertained a group of friends at their home Saturday evening. Lundell at their home Friday, May 11. Other guests pre sent were Garland Swanson and sons John and Jimmy. Mrs. Lun dell and Mrs. Anna Lindstrom. Mrs. Roy Lindstrom and daugh ter Susan, left for Portland Mon day. They were accompanied by Miss Grace Cunningham of Post Falls, Idaho. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer IIollz and daughter are visiting his sister and brother-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kirkelie in Tacoma. Wash. Mr. and Mrs. William Zinter and children attended the funeral services of her grandmother. Mrs. Anna Hieny at Gresliam May 12. Harold Holtz. of the U. S. Army is spending his furlough with his parents, Mr, and Mrs. C larence Holtz. Mr. and Mrs. Truman Messen-i ger and children of Hermiston spent a few days with her mother Mrs. Winnie Zinter. Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Pearson of Prosser, Wash., spent the weekend at the Corliss McLeod home. They took their daughter, Deeanrj, home with them. She has been vifitinghere for several days. Mr. and Mrs. Roland Bergstrom left for Portland Sunday where they will visit relatives and bring their daughter, Carley, home. The H. E. C. of Willows grange met at the home of Mrs. Her shall Townsend near Heppner on May 6 with a potluck dinner at noon. At the business meeting plans were made and committees were appointed for the Father Son banquet to be given at the grange hall June 5. The door prize was received by Mrs. Er nest Heliker. Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Bristow at tended the Mother's weekend ac tivities at the Oregon State col lege in Corvallis where their son, John, is a student. Some of the high lights were interfraternal singing and the variety show by the college. Attend Funeral Mr. and Mrs. Harry Yarnell and son Alton, and Mr. and Mrs. Char les O'Connor attended the funeral services of Lew D. Yarnell, 65, at Bickleton, May 12. Mr. Yarnell who was a native of Mohawk, Oregon moved to Bickleton when he was 15 years old and lived there with his parents, the late Mr .and Mrs. George Yarnell. He was a farmer and raised Hereford cattle. He died in Sunnyside on May 10 and funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church in Bickleton with interment in the I. O. O. F. cemetery there. Pallbearers were Jewel Crider, Dell Whitmore, Lawrence Whit more, Delmar Allbrittin, Jack and Ray Jamison. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Gladys Crider of CHARLES ALLEN TOM REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR STATE REPRESENTATIVE Pel. Adv. O. A. Tom, Rufus Ore. Bickleton; two brothers, Harry Yarnell of lone and Glen Yarnell of Yakima; a cousin, Mrs. O'Con nor of Ione;one niece, Mrs. Mary Belle Clark of Grandview, Wash.; three nephews, Alton Yarnell of lone, Clifford Yarnell of Vancou ver, Wash., and Willis Yarnell of California. He was a member of the grange and the cattlemen as sociation. He was well known here. H. O. and George Ely and Mrs. Sadie Olson arrived home Mon day after visiting their brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ely in Coos Bay. They found Mrs. Ely ill at her home. Mrs. Olson will remain here for a few days before returning to her home in Spokane. Seaman Wallace Gaarsland left Sunday for San Francisco where his ship, the carrier Kearslage is in dry dock. He has been on a thirty day leave. Mrs. Sam Esteb who recently broke her hip, was removed from the St. Anthony hospital in Pen dleton to the Pioneer Memorial hospital in Heppner. She is get ting along satisfactorily. Mr. and Mrs. David Baker are the parents of a daughter Shir ley Sylvia, born May 6 in Pendle ton. She weighed 5 lbs. and 15 ozs. Mr. and Mrs. Henry George of Pendleton and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Baker of lone are the grandparents and Mrs. Rena Chis by of Portland is the great-grandmother.
