Choir prac tice n Bird Guzzlers Built In Morrow County Eleven bird guzzlers have been constructed in Morrow county the past summer to make water avail able throughout the year for the birds and game in dry areas, John Ely, biologist for the State Game Commission, northeast region, with headquarters in Pendleton, reported today. The guzzlers, which hold 250 gallons of water, consist of a square cement catch basin with a sloping ramp on one side. As the water recedes in the cistern the birds move further down the ramp fo rwater. A wood frame top, covered with sheet alumi num, catches and diverts the water into the basin. Seven of the guzzlers have been built on the Charles Carlson ranch, two on the Al Bunch and two on the Paul Brown ranches. Experience in Umatilla county with these water basins show that Theadore from Portland, aunt and uncle of Mrs. Lewis Wetzel, were visitors at the Wetzel home one day last week. Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Shresmanrr from Manhatten, Montana, re turned to their home after a visit here with a daugnter ami family, Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Wet- OlYMPU, WASWNCTO, their use increases year after vear, Elv said. A total of 22 guz-! zlers have been built there since 1919 and five each have been constructed in Sherman and Gil liam counties since 1951. This is the first year for guzzler con struction in Morrow county. The guzzlers, which cost about $200 .each, are built with Pitt-man-Robinson funds obtained from 10 per cent tax on firearms and amunition. Quail, pheasants, song birds, rabbits, dogs, cats and coyotes are among the birds and animals life utilizing the guzzlers. Wildlife Leader Gives Pheasant Hunting Pointers Pheasant hunters can save time and energy and make more certain of seeing their share of birds this year if, before the seal son opens, they will get permis sion of landowners to hunt and also find out where pheasants are. Art Einarsen, fish and game j research unit leader at Oregon i State college, says that because' of this year's cold and wet spring and the usual heavy loss of eggs and young birds from agricul tural machinery, pheasant popu lations in most areas in the Wil lamette valley are spotty. Phea sant populations are considered normal in most of the rest of the state with some Eastern Oregon spots considered better than aver age. The season opens October 21 in all but a few areas. The increased amount of posted land need not bother the hunter if he will pay farmers the cour tesy of asking for permission to hunt and then respecting the wishes of the owner concerning his property. Einarsen states. A canvass made by the research unit at OSC showed that 85 per cent of Benton county farmers FULLETON'S BEST USED CAR BUYS 1951 CHEVROLET 4 door $1425 1947 CHEV. Only 8 percent refused to allow hunt inc. This fact is general throughout the state. The research leader suggests that after getting permission to hunt during the coming season, the location of ring-necks be checked. Best times are during the early morning before the hunter goes to work or in the late afternon. Ditch banks, swales and fence rows are favorite haunts. The ring-necked phea sant cook is probably the most wary of all game birds, and after a very short time flushing the bird becomes difficult without a good dog. The dog also reduces crippling loss.
