Page 4 Heppner Gazette Times, Thursday December 18, 1952 Monument Scene -Jewell-Shelly Wedding Sunday Monuments Gymnasium was - once again the scene of one of the prettiest weddings of the year, when Jessie Rae Shelly "became the bride of Joyce Jewell, on Sunday, December 14, at two o'clock. Rev. Paul Kimmell Jr. officiated with the single ring ceremony. Mrs. Janice Cork was pianist and Mrs. Darlene Boyer sang two songs, "At Dawning" and "With This Ring, I Thee Wed". The bride was lovely in lace and white satin, her veil was held in place by an Angel face cap. She carried a bouquet of white rose buds. Her attendants were: maid of honor, Isobel Leathers, who wore a salmon pink satin formal and carried a bouquet of pink carnations tied with light blue ribbon streamers. Bridesmaids were Rhoene Bleakman and Donna Porter. Rhoene wore a green taffeta for mal and carried a pink carnation bouquet tied with yellow ribbon streamers. Donna wore a yellow net formal and carried a bouquet of red carnations with green rib bon streamers. The brides flow er girl was little Ruth Ann Capon, who wore a blue net formal and carried a bouquet of pink carna tions tied with white ribbons. The bride was given in marriage by her father, Jim Shelly. The bride's mother wore blue satin and a corsage of rod rose buds. The groom asked Mrs. Mary Wright of Heppner to be seated in place of his mother, who lives In Missouri and could not attend the wedding. Mrs. Wright wore navy blue with a red carnation corsage. Yvonne Stubblefield pre- sided over the guest book. After the bride and groom cut the first piece of cake from the large three tiered cake decorated with a doll bride and groom; Lydia Capon assisted by Louella Neal cut and served the cake, while Clara Strecker poured coffee and Lois Hill and Linnie Gilman poured punch. The punch was made by Linnie Gilman. The tables were decorated with hand made lace table cloths and cand les. The happy couple were followed as far as John Day by a group of friends. They all had dinner together before the newlyweds left for the home of the groom's parents in Koshkonong, Missouri. They will spend the holidays there before returning to Monu ment where they will make their home. Lex Garden Club Meets At Healy Home The Lexington Garden Club met in the home of Mrs. Bernice Healy Tuesday, Dec. 9. The following members were present: Gena Leonard, Bernice Lott, Edna Munkers, Catie Padberg, Faye Munkers, Edith Miller, Bernice Healy, Mrs. Myles Martin, Gloria Dolvin, Millie Evans, Anne Smouse, Emma Peck, Marie Mar tin, Mrs. W. A. Ruggles, Mrs. F. McMillan, Mrs. Mae McCall, and Mrs. Frances Schrage. Guests of the day were: Mrs. Ruth Van Winkle and Marjorie Gardner of Heppner. 1 Members brought gifts to the meeting to be given to some child for Christmas. Mrs. Mary Van Stevens was present at the meeting and de monstrated to the club how to make an interesting and beautiful "door swags" for Christmas. Mrs. Edna Munkers received a gift from the Birthday Box and Grange Members Hold Christmas Parties The Rhea creek grange and the grange H. E. C. both held their Christmas parties during the pasr week, the Grange party being held Sunday evening and the PEC party at the home of Tacie Parker on Thursday. At the Grange program an ex change of gifts concluded the evening with a Santa Claus bring ing treats for everyone. At the H. E. C. party the hostess, assisted by Hannah Anderson and Ruth Bergstrom served a turkey dinner at noon to 22 members. Following the dinner a business meeting was held and secret pal gift3 were presented to the members. Carnation Club Has Christmas Party The annual Christmas party of the Carnation Club was held on Thursday evening at the home of Mrs. Theta Stratton on S. Chase street with Mrs. William Cun ningham and Mrs. James McCabe as assistant hostesses. Names of Honor Pals were revealed and a gift exchange between members. Those having birthdays during the months of October, November and December were presented a gift by the club. A bathroom fix ture was presented to Mrs. Strat ton as a housewarming gift with Mrs. Rufus Piper making the pre sentation. The club plans to decorate min iature Christmas trees for the Nursing Home ward of Pioneer Memorial hospital and shut-in members in town. The committee in charge of this project includes Mrs. Stratton, Mrs. Carl King and Mrs. Jesse C. Payne. Officers for the ensuing year were elected. Mrs. John W. Farra was chosen president; Mrs. James Ware, vice president; and Mrs. Carl King, secretary-treasurer. Refreshments of ice cream and cake were served to the following: Mrs. Scotty Applegate, Mrs. Clive Huston, Mrs. Dalbert E. Bailey, Mrs Clara B. Gertson, Mrs. Lin coln Nash, Mrs. Bud Springer, Miss Maryann Jensen, Mrs. R. G. McMurtry, Mrs. Rufus Piper, Mrs. Mehl LaVelle, Mrs. Albert Pear son, Mrs. James Ware, Mrs. John W. Farra, Mrs. Carl King, Mrs. Alvie Casebeer and Mrs. John Bergstrom. New Officers Elected By Degree of Honor Officers for 1953 elected at a recent meeting of the Degree of Honor include Mrs. Alice McCabe, past president; Mrs. Theta Strat ton, president; Mrs. Martha King, second vice president; Mrs. Clara B. Gertson, financial secretary; Mrs. Ruth F. Payne, treasurer; Miss Maryanne Jensen, usher; Mrs. Bernice Nash, assistant ush er; Mrs. Mary McMurtry, color bearer; Mrs. Eugenia Huston, pianist; Mrs. Dorothy Applegate, inside watch; Mrs. Barbara Ware, outside watch. Installation of of ficers will be held early in Janu ary and at that time, appointive officers will be named. HOLY NAME GROUP ELECTS At a meeting of the Holy Names society of St. Patrick's church, fol, lowing their Communion break fast November 30, Phil Blakney was elected president and Jim Peterson, secretary for the coming year. Mrs. Ruth Van Winkle received a door prize. Following the meeting lovely refreshments were served by the hostess. High Awards go Oregon l-II Club Youth TOP RATING honors in Oregon were awarded six teen-ageri for high ratings in the 1952 National 4-H Dairy Foods and Bread Demonstration programs. Shirley Peg Betty Sut Nelion Tops in Dairy Foods Demonstra tions in Oregon were Shirley Page, 15, of Salem, and the team of Betty Sue Nelson, 16, and Louise Bates, 16, of Corvallis. Appreciating the im portance of milk for good health, they have utilized many new and palatable ways of varying the diet by the use of dairy products. Their demonstra tions have been given before 836 people. Shirley gave the best in dividual demonstration on dairy foods in the state this year, present ing a "Five-Star Casserole, made of bread, cheese, milk, salt, mustard and butter. Betty Sue and Louise'a prize-winning demonstration, ''Cheese Fondue" made with pow dered milk, was nutritious, economi cal and convenient. Chosen state winners, each girl was presented with a 17-jewcl wrist watch by the Car nation Company. Incarrying out the objectives of this' program, the teen agers learned how to speak well in public, developed poise, good sports manship and teamwork. Louile Betel Joen Kirns Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Scott were called to Goldendale, Wash., on Wednesday to attend funeral ser vices for his aunt, the late Mrs. Mary Drake, 88, who died at her home there earlier in the week Mrs. Drake was well known in Heppner, having visited here many times. SAAGER'S Janet Bebcock Donne Rohrer Demonstration program. Joan Karns, 17, of Orenco, demonstrated "Rolls are Easy," explaining I the different kinda of flour that may be used, and the nutritional value of each ingredient. Joan showed how to make several kinds of rolls from the same dough. Her demonstration was given before 500 people. The team of Janet Babcock, 15, and Donna Rohrer, 16, both of Hills boro, gave as their prize-winning demonstration, "The Art of Bread Baking," in which they gave the steps in mixing, temperature of milk, kinds of gluten and its importance in bread making and how to test dough. Standard Brands provided the Sav ings Bonds awards to these young people for their outstanding work. ' All these programs are conducted under the direction of the Cooperative Extension Service.
