HEPPNER of a vast western regional pro ject, has shown during the past six years that for the best results in beef cattle operations rate and efficiency of gain must be con sidered in animal selection along with type and conformation. Latest findings from the pro ject are outlined in a new station technical bulletin prepared by Jerome J. Dahmen, research as sistant, and Dr. Ralph Bogart, ani mal husbandman. In the new publication, the authors point out that birth weight has a significant effect on both rate and economy of gain. Calves larger at birth will tend to reach slaughter weight at a younger age and with less feed. The current trend to market cattle at younger ages increases the importance of the birth weight consideration in animal selection, researchers emphasize. Bulls have been shown to gain faster and to utilize feed more ef ficiently than heifers. The aver age daily gain for bulls during a recent test period was 2.3 pounds as compared to an overage daily gain of 2.0 pounds for heifers. Bulls required an average of 391 pounds total digestible nutrients to gain 100 pounds body weight Right For Salads v S I V if during the test while the heifers required an average of 483 pounds TDN. No relationship was found be tween suckling and feed lot gains. Dahmen and Bogart point out, however, that suckling gains are important as a measurement of the milking ability of the dam. Weaning conformation scores did not have a significant effect on either rate of economy of gains during the test. The animal husbandmen found furthermore that the appearance of the calves was not a reliable index of either efficiency or capacity for growth.
