They find that a good cow will take 70 bites a minute and that any cow that takes less than 50 bites a minute is headed for hamburger. They conclude that pastures should be managed in such a manner so that there is five inches or more of growth so that the animal can consume more roughage in less time. They further point out that the cow will put In an average of 7 hours every day eating whether it is on short grass or long grass. Therefore, on five inch grass in a 7 1 i hour period, a cow can get 125 pounds inside of her. That is enough for a loa of milk and a satisfactory poundage of beef. On the other hand, in 7'i hours a cow on short grass would consume 50 pounds or less which is not enough for heavy production.
