Mr. W. Benson handled the mail during Mr. Coats absence. Mrs. Anthony Zielinski and daughter Toni Kay and small son Ronald are visiting with her par ents, Mr .and Mrs. E. W. Peck. Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Duncan have purchased the Ewing resi dence and lots north to the street. Mr. and Mrs. Ewing are living in one of the cabins of their motel. Mr. Elvin Ely was badly burned fame Wednesday when the oil hose broke loose and sprayed him with oil and fire, as the crew were patching the highway near lone. He was rushed to the Heppner hospital where he will be for sev eral days. Mr. and Mrs. A. I Mefford of Renton, Wash., were visitors at the Leo Root home Friday. Mr. Mefford and Mrs. Root are brother and sister. Bobby Leath left Monday for West Palm Beach, Fla., where he will be stationed for some time. Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Lilly and family and Ora Ely visited at the home of the girl's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Ely. Mr. and Mrs. L. V. Kummer, Jim and Ann left Monday morn ing for Milton, Oregon. Mr. Kum mer has been here the past two weeks inspecting potatoes that have been shipped to market. Mr. Vet Conyers and son Forest have been in Boardman the past week visiting relatives. Dinner guests at the Root home Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Ver non Root and sons of Athena, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Macomber and sons of Arlington, Mr. and Mrs. A. I. Mefford of Renton. n Swanson Services Held In lone Wed. By Echo Palmateer Carl William Swanson died Sunday afternoon August 3 at the Pioneer Memorial hospital in Heppner after a long illness. Mr. Swanson was born January 21, 1S75 in San Jose, California and to lone in 1903. He was married to Katy Arvilla Petteys April 10, 1904. He was engaged in farming and carpentering and in 191S operated a feed mill. In 1924 he built and ran a grocery store and had the first frozen food lockers in lone. He is survived by his wife, onej son Carlton of lone, two daughters Mrs. Cless (Norma) Rea of Ione, and Mrs. Frank (Ruth) Lundell of i Page 3 Wednesday of last week with Mrs. Paul O'Meara and Mrs George Myles as hostesses. Mrs Joe Gaarsland and Mrs. Echo Palmateer were the honorees. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Ring were recent visitors to Portland. They took their grandchildren, Bernita and Tommy Harris back to their home in Portland. Miss Alice Nichoson of Port land spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Ed i t h Nichoson. Miss Shirlee Smouse, also, came up and went to Heppner to visit her mother, Mrs. Anne Smouse. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Carlson and daughters returned to their home in Seattle last week after visiting relatives hero. John Bryson spent the weekend at the Leslie Roundy home in Kennewick, Wash. He took their son Keith home who visited here several days. As a guest of honor Mrs. Cas well, the Home Economics county agent attended. - They had a picnic, which 12 attended, nine members and three guests. The club members are hurrying to finish aprons, pot holders, head scarfs and pin cushions for the fair which is September 18, 19, and 20. The sewing club members have planned a movie to boost the 4-11 club building on Boardmans' new fair grounds. Gene Rietmann of the U. S. Army called his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Omar Rietmann by telephone Sunday morning from Camp Gor don, Georgia. Gene will get his honorable discharge September 20. Charles White spent the week end with his family in Forest Grove and also attended the Ore gon Sport Car Association at Ore gon City. Mrs. Lewis Ball and Mrs. Imo gene Monney went to Walla Wal la Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Wade, Mrs. Wilbur Wade and Mrs. Elmer Davis of Estacade spent the week end with Mrs. H. O. Ely. They also visited H .0. Elv at the St. Anthony hospital in Pendleton. Mrs. Wade and Mrs. Davis are aunts of Mrs. Ely. Ely at the hos pital in Pendleton and found him much improved. He is able to be in a wheel chair some of the time. Elmer West of Pendleton was a Visitor here over the weekend. Fire Controlled Near Monument By Millie Wilson Last Thursday as Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Musgrave were returning from John Day at 2:30 a. m. they saw a fire back of Frank Kings place in Round Basin. They re ported it at the Guard Station. Chet Brown and Don Oilman left at once. They were joined in Hamilton by Tom Ross and his crew of loggers. They had it under control before it had a chance to spread. for Mrs. Stella Reynolds left California last Tuesday. Chet Brown was attending to matters of business in John Day last Wednesday. Anna Dean Markson and hus band are the parents of a baby boy born July 2t!i at Blaine. Wash. Mrs. Markson is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allot Fleming. This is the Markson's first child. Mrs. Nona Copeland and family left Friday to visit relatives on Rhea Creek and in Heppner be fore returning to ther home in Portland.
