Veterans Property
Tax Exemption
Deadline April 1
uisaoied veterans and war
widows were warned today that
April 1 is the last day on which
they may apply for a $1500 pro
perty tax exemption provided by
state law. Application is made to
the county assessor in the county
where the property is located.
The Oregon Department of Vet.
erans' Affairs said the special tax
exemption on homes or personal
property is available to the fol
lowing persons:
1. Any war veteran with a 40
percent disability or more, as cer
tified by the Veterans Adminis
tration or a branch of the armed
forces. The veteran must obtain
this statement from the Portland
VA regional office, or from the
branch of service from which
he was retired, and submit it to
the county assessor when he ap
plies for the tax exemption.
2. The unremarried widow of
a war veteran. She must submit
proof of the husband's military
service and copies of the marriage
and death certificates.
3. Any union veteran of the
Mexican, Civil or Indian wars.
4. Any war veteran who, lack
ing a disability rating from the
VA or the armed forces, submits
a certified statement from his
physician and the county health
officer that he is' 40 percent dis
abled. The veteran in this cate
gory is not entitled to the exemp
tion if his gross income in the
last calendar year exceeded $2500.
The applicant must also submit
proof that the property is re
corded in his name. All evi
dence supporting his claim must
be filed before the April 1 dead
line. The tax exemption applies
to the person's homestead that
is, the property he ownes and on
which he resides or to his per
sonal property.
