Page 4 Founders Day Feted By Soroptimists The Soroptimist club met for their weekly luncheon and meet ing at O'Donnell's. This October 18th meeting was in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the founding of the first Soroptimist club at Oakland, California, and past-president, Francis Mitchell, was in charge of the program and conducted a quiz on Soroptimist history and a prize was given to the winner. There are 478 members in Can ada, the United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Brazil and Cuba. One tangible way in which Soropti mists will mark this pearl Jubi lee of their founding is to con tribute pennies one from every member for each of the 30 years for fellowships. The fellowships are awarded to women scholars for advance work In pioneer fields of research. So far three fellowships each for $3000, have been given. It was in the fall of 1921 that 80 business women in Alameda County, California, pooled their efforts to form a club dedicated to service and to the betterment of their community. They chose the name, "Soroptimist", coined from two Latin words, "Soror" meaning sister, and "optima" meaning "the best and highest good." Translated freely, the name means "the best for wo men," objective of all Soropti mist clubs. In organizing, the women fol lowed the pattern of existing men's clubs. Membership was by invitation and was limited to established, active executive wo men In specific classifications, with only one member from a classification in each club. The present Soroptimist Internation al Association, while the young est, is the largest classified or ganized group of classified exe cutive women in the world. A report on the Gar den club was given and articles were read on different kinds of flowers. A vote of thanks was given Mrs. Omar Rletmann, gen eral chairman of the flower show for the work she done to make the show a success. Also the club thanked Mrs. W. R. Wentworth for- her work. Refreshments were served from tables decorated in ihfl Hallowe'en motif. Those winning prizes were Mrs. Edith Nichoson, Mrs. O. E. Llndstrom and Mrs. Noel Doybns. Va cud sugar, salt, ana milk in iov 01 double boiler. Add chocolate. Cook over hot water until chocolate is melted and gelatine is thoroughly dissolved. Blend well with rotary egg beater. Pour slowly over egg yolks, stirring constantly. Return mixture to double boiler and cook 3 minutes longer, stirring- con stantly. Cool 10 minutes. Beat egg whites until foamy throughout. Add remaining cup sugar gradually and continue beating until mixture will stand 2 or 3 tablespoons sweet cocoa mix Va cup of the in stiff peaks. Fold in chocolate mixture gradually, blending well. Add vanilla ana coconut. Turn into 1-quart melon mold. Chill until firm, then unmold. 1 Combine cream and cocoa mix in small bowl. Beat with rotary egg beater until fluffy and thick. Spread over unmolded sponge and decorate top with shreds of coco nut to resemble football lacings. Surround with additonal coconut, which has been tinted green.. Makes 7 to 9 servings. Besides having to dress In outlandish costumes, several of the group had to give short speeches before the Student Body. After the rally, that evening, the Initiation was completed. The Pep Club would like to congratulate the new members on their excellent sportsmanship. The Junior class has chosen the play, "The Night of January Sixteenth" for the annual fall production. Tryouts were held Wednesday evening and the cast will be an nounced In the near future. Two National champion arch ers, the Dill brothers, at the first National Assembly Programj demonstrated trick and precision archery to the students of Hepp ner on Monday the 15th. The show was a mixture of hu mor and skill with a short ex planation of the fundamentals of archery. An Editorial, in the last issue of the Hehisch, thanked the Hep pner businessmen for the adver tisement of the first home game, which they sponsored in the Ga zette Times. Many people have asked where the school paper got it's name, Hehisch. It comes from the fol lowing three words: HEppner High SCHool. At one time it was the name of the Annual but now it is the name of our High School Paper. Mrs. J. J. Farley and Mrs. Cllve Huston were in Pendleton Thurs day where they encountered a torrential rain and thunder storm early in the afternoon They re port that rain stood to the depth of four inches in tjie streets dur ing the height of the storm and en route home, they observed the dust blowing in Echo. Women's Society of Christian Ser vice meets the third Wednesday of each month at 2 p.m. The Annual Bazaar of the Wo men's Society of Christian Ser vice will be held on November 17. More Green Peas For Processing Grown In County Morrow county farmers now raise more green peas for can ning and freezing than they did for all markets combined only three years ago. U. S. Department of Agricult ure figures show that Morrow county harvested 203 acres of peas for sale to canners and freezers this year. In 1948 the county raised only 150 acres of peas for both the fresh and pro cessing markets. Growers were able to sell the harvest from this larger acreage because steady expansion of the canning industry provides ready markets for greatly Increased production of cash crops, explain, ed Dr. H. This year 56,000 acres of green peas were planted for canners and freezers. Three years ago the total for fresh plus processing was 41,430 acres.
