Vet Trainees Urged
To Notify When Thru
To prevent overpayments of
subsistence, the Veterans Admin
istration urges ex-GI students
and Job trainees and their schools
or firms to notify the VA as soon
as a veteran breaks off or com
pletes his program.
In voicing this appeal today,
Leslie R. French, VA training of
ficer for this area, explained that
one- and two-month overpay
ments were continuing in consid
erable numbers.
"Most of these excess pay
menst can be prevented," French
said. 'They are usually checks
sent out after a veteran stops his
training but before the VA is
told about it. In the past two
months, several Oregon schools
have been slow in reporting
drop-outs."
An ex-GI who interrupts or
completes his training is nnt on.
titled to subsistence after that
date, and the law requries that
he return any overpayments, the
VA aide pointed out. If he falls
to arrange repayment with the
VA, he faces loss of future edu
cational benefits under the Gl
Bill.
Advance notice is preferable
whenever a decision is made to
discontinue school or training,
Mr. French said. However,
prompt notice immediately after
such a break will prevent most
overpayments.
