TRUCK LEAVES HIGHWAY
CRASHES THRU FENCE
L. E. Dick Sr., pinchhitting for
his son. Edwin Jr., last Thursday
had an experience which he is for
tunate to be able to tell about.
Dick took the Standard Oil truck
delivery to the Eight Mile section
and returning to Heppner in the
late afternoon ran off the grade
at the A. W. Gammell place crash
ing through the fence into the field
below. Considerable damage was
done to the truck and Dick was un
conscious for several hours from
striking his head on various objects
within" the cab- Fortunately, both
truck and driver are on the mend.
Ed is around on the street again,
showing signs of having had a con
flict of some kind and thanking
his lucky star that the accident was
no worse.

DEER KILL LOWEST IN
YEARS, RANGER STATES
Hunters have been numerous the
first week of the deer hunting sea
son, but early season kill has been
the lowest in years, reports the lo
cal forest office. Up to Wednesday
forenoon approximately 50 deer had
been put into storage in Heppner,
a number far short of the mark
in recent years.
The shortage is attributed to the
lack of time allotted to a large ma
jority of the hunters, inasmuch as
nearly everybody is employed these
days and a brief week-end trip is
all the time they can take- Short
age' "of gas rations also has to be
taken into the picture and in all ,
there will be at least 25 percent
less venison in city lockers this
fall than previously.
