Leland McLouth FINDS COLUMBIA GORGE REGION OF GRANDEUR Editor's note The following letter was written by an 89 year old man who has seen quite a bit of the world and who received his greatest thrill driving up the Columbiia River highway enroute from the Wil lamette valley to Morrow coun ty. Lexington. Oregon Feb. 3, 1943 Editor, Heppner Gazette Times, Heppner, Oregon; Dear Editor. I am one of the old pioneers of Minnesota, an old Scotchman bom on Jully 25, 1854, and proud of the name Scotch American. I courted one of Scotland's bonnie lassies on the bonnie banks of Clyde and gained her heart and hand where that famous song was written by Harry Lauder Roaming in the Gloaming on the Bonnie Banks of Clyde. We were married in 1876. I was a railroad switchman, signal man and operator, but we wanted to come to the USA and become Yank ees. We landed at Perham in 1880 at Ottertail county, Minn. I went to Detroit Lake where the court was in session, got my first paper and filed a claim on the north side of Load River. When I got the shack completed there was not a white person on the north side but my Scotch lassies and our three babies. Nothing but the wilderness, wild animals and Indians My wife had no fear, even among the In dians. One day an Indian and his squaw were passing by our home. Mrs. Wallace saw that the squaw' was sick. She went out and got the squaw into the house, nursing her for two weeks. It turned out to be the chief's oldest son and his wife and the chief issued an brder for all the Indians to be good to the paleface squaw. I was at liberty to get out and hustle for the fam ily. I got a job as cook in one of the lumber camps where there were about 100 men. It was that famous log drive from the headwaters of the Red River of the north to Win nipeg, Manitoba, Canada. There was a contract by a concern in St. Cloud, Min., to deliver 30,000,000 feet of lumber to Canada at the rate of 10,000,000 feet a year. The dis tance was 1250 miles. We drove thru 22 lakes in Minnesota. The largest was Otter Tail lake. It was 15 miles long and about nine miles wide. My home is at Hubbard, near Salem. I was blessed with two wives and have lived in two cen turies. My boy, Herman Wallace, and his wife came to my home at Hub 1ard and brought me here. I have hopes of regaining my health by a change of climate. In the last eight months I have suffered six strokes and lived through it all. There are millions who go abroad to see scenery and observe gran deur. Well, let them take a trip along the Columbia river and they will get thrills they won't forget for 50 years. With the roads as slick and icy as they are this win ter, a clear head isn't to be ig nored. It is really a magnificent and thrilling drive with its water falls, tunnels, and wonderful farm land. Yours to see the United States first and that drive will give you. something to remember. Yours truly, SAM G. WALLACE.
