One difference is that the spirit of giving has been broadened. Condi tions wrought by the war have promp ted a desire to spread more joy this in the face of rapidly growing lists of shortages of those things we have al ways considered essential to comfort and happiness. Our first thought should be, and we think it has been, for the welfare and comfort of our armed forces. A reali zation that they are giving their all to the cause of freedom and democracy is sufficient ground to give them first place in our thoughts. Out of it all the world is learning and understanding more clearly the teachings of Him whose birthday we honor at this season of the year. o CAN YOU BLAME THEM? A current radio story tells of the sinking of a German boat by a British warship. The crew of the German boat took to the water and the hated British put out boats to rescue them. As the story goes, the number to be rescued was not large, or did not appear so to the British, but each time they had the waters about cleared a new batch of Heinies would appear. Becoming sus picious, an officer of the British vessel made an investigation and this is what he found: in the crew of the warship were a number of Poles. As the Ger mans came over the rail the Poles would rush them to the other side of the boat and heave them into the water. Thus the seemingly unending string of Germans. Whether or not this actually happen ed it is a good story. More than that, it is difficult to find a reason for not con doning the Poles' action. If there is one nation now under the Nazi heel that deserves to seek revenge in whatever manner it is Poland. The Nazis are using every means at their command to completely exterminate the Poles, some of their methods so horrible as to defy proper description. Thus we find the Poles enlisting wherever they may come in most direct contact with the enemy and many of them sell their lives, for just one chance to put a little clent in the Hitler war machine. Their belief is that the only good Nazi is a dead Nazi and they were not tossing the Heinies into the briny deep just to see how big a splash they would make.
