8 Heppner Gazette Times, December 3, 1942 Our men In Service From somewhere up north, Lt. Leo Young has written his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Young of lone, about life in Uncle Sam's last great frontier. The letter follows: Dear Mother and Dad: My letters have been quite few and far between lately. The last week I have been on a nice little jaunt had a very interesting trip. Last Thursday I left on a little mail boat about noon and arrived, where some of our men are sta tioned about 4:30 next morning and paid them. Then about 10:30, with a guide and another man I started over a mountain and glacier, about a four-mile trip which took near ly four hours. It was plenty rug ged. These glaoers are pretty tough going. Of course I managed to fall through the ice in a lake in the middle of the glacier, so all in all it was some trip. I was surely plenty tired when we finally hit camp. I had a pack of about 40 pounds most of the way. The next morning I caught a train for APO 942 (by the way, you addressed my last letter there) and got there about 1 p. m. I had a couple days work there on my sales commissary accounts and came back with some officers who had driven over in a car on a new road, so I came back yesterday with them. It's about a 10 hour drive and plenty rough. I was alone in the back of the car and I hit the top at least 10 times. Twice we completely switched ends on ice in the roads and once we ended up with the right front wheel about three feet off a 25 foot bank on the left side of the road some fun! 'I fie thing about it that sttill makes me mad is that I was auth orized to fly back if they hadn't been there. I haven't oeen in a plane for 12 years. It would real ly have been a nice trip and I would likely have been able to stay Friday-Saturday, Dec. 4-5 The Big Shot Humphrey Bogart, Irene Manning, Richard Travis A real thriller that will hold your Interest from beginning to end. PLUS RAIDERS OF THE RANGE Bob Steele, Tom Tyler, Rufo Davis Outdoor action drama with three outstanding western stars. Sunday-Monday, Doc. 6-7 Desperate Journey Errol Flynn, Ronald Reagan, Nancy Coleman, Raymond Massey, Alan Hale 1,000 miles of Hun-defying advent ure that is setting a record in screen thrills! Tuesday, Dec. 8 Reg. A dm. Prices Bond Night Discontinued Spy Ship Craig Stevens, Irene Manning, Marix Wrixon An exciting hunt for a Nazi spy ring. . . . Also "THE DAUGHTER OF ROSIE O'GRADY," starring Patty Hale, sensational 6-year-old in a swell song and dance story; and "ARGENTINE HORSES," a beau tiful Technicolor film showing the world famous horses of the land of the Pampas. Wednesday-Thursday, Dec. 9-10 Ten Gentlemen From West Point Few films offer as much entertain ment as this story of thrill-packed days in the nation's "cradle of heroes." PLUS THE MARCH OF TIME: THE FIGHTING FRENCH Scenes in France as well as of the Fighting French forces under Gen eral Charles De Gaulle on the seas and in French Equatorial Africa STAR Reporter over there longer. I'm in a warm room now so no more worry about tents. It's much more convenient. I saw Major Ken Dalton and Capt. Rafferty, both of Salem, over there. I think Floyd would prob ably know both of them. They are both getting along swe 11. I haven't had a chance to do any hunting yet and I really don't think I will, for a whle at least. Maybe later this winter. All for now. Dan't format Ito write.
