8 Heppner Gazette Times, October 15; 1942 LIVESTOCK SPECIALIST AT OSC GOING TO CHINA OREGON STATE COLLEGE R. G. Johnson, head of the animal husbandry department here, said been selected by the state depart ment at Washington, D. C. to join a party of American agricultural specialists who will spend a year in China assisting that goverment in developing its agricultural re sources. Professor Johnson will take a year's leave of absence to fill this important government assignment, says W. A. Schocnfeld, dean and director of agriculture, who added that the appointment is a high compliment both to Professor John son and this institution. Professor Johnson is a graduate of Oregon State who later spent four years on a Wasco county stock ranch 'before entering the extension service as county agent in Grant county. In 1335 he was transferred to the instructional staff here and was recently named head of the ani mal husbandry department. He goes to Washington this month and thence to China by an undesignated route. BOOKWORMS MEET WITH MRS. PETERSON Mrs. Ture Peterson was hostess to the Bookworms at her home Tues day evening. Beautiful fall flowers enhanced the rooms. Mrs. Lera Crawford gave an interesting re view of Werfel's "Song of Burna dette". Mrs. 3. C. Fo-sythe was a guest of the club. Gertsen re turned Saturday night from south ern Oregon where they spent a week visiting at the home of Mrs. Gertsen's son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William Amhorn and young son, William George who was born Sept. 24. uur ivien In Service Pfc Richard Hayes writes his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hayes that he is greatly enjoying a family in Australia who have opened their home to the boys in khaki He re ports seeing Pine Thornburg of Lexington and Delbert Robinson of Hardman in Australia and they are the only familiar faces he has seen since beginning his soldiering. He says the girls are good looking and friendly, causing some of the boys to consider remaining there but as for himself, he's coming back when the time comes. OFFICE CALLERS Among residents of the lone sec tion transacting business in Hepp ner the fore part of the week were Harold Mason of lower Rhea creek and Elmer Peterson who runs a farm just below lone. VISIT PORTLAND Mrs. Vawter Parker and daugh ter Cecelia and Mrs. Parker's mo ther, Mrs. Julia Barry, drove to Portland Sunday on a brief visit and shopping tour. They returned to Heppner Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Crawford, ranchers of the North lone district, were transacting business in Hepp ner Tuesday. RETURNS TO TEACHING Mrs. Anna Q. Thomson has taken up residence at Pine City for the winter. She has besn called from retirement to accept a teaching po sition in the school there and since transportation is somewhat of a problem she expects to spend most of her time at Pine City. IN PORTLAND Josephine Mahoney is spending a few weeks in Portland having gone to the city Friday. Word from Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gemmell this week is to the effect that their son, PFC Jimmie Gem mell, has been transferred to the medical detachment at Fort Stevens and that he is now driving ambu lance and has received his first "hash mark". (Just what the "hash mark" is was not revealed, but to a layman it indicates a corporal tf..ripe maybe). J'immte has had three years with the national guard. Pvt. Douglas Drake has written his mother, Mrs. Ray Drake, that he recently received orders to sail to a tropical climate. Douglas has been stajtioned at Angc Island, California since his induction.
