Official Paper for Morrow County
Heppner Gazette Times, Heppner, Oregon
Thursday, April 3, 1941
Let's Back Them Up
f A GOODLY number of Morrow
county boys have already gone
into the service of their country,
some as volunteers and some as se
lectees. They have become scatter
ed throughout the country in var
ious training camps, and they face
an uncertain future with breaking
of home ties.
These boys stand ready to bear
the brunt of battle, if need be, to
protect the interests of their country
which means the security of the
homes and businesses of all citizens
in the land. In immediate compen
sation they receive small pay. They
are entitled at least to expression of
appreciation from those who may
never have to place their lives in
jeopardy in defense of country.
In uniting our country for war it
is not enough to merely send the
young men into training as sailors,
soldiers or aviators. Those "be
hind the lines" must help the mor
ale of these young men in every
possible way. The little gifts from
home help. Letters from friends are
deeply appreciated. Good books and
magazines are always mighty ac
ceptable. Those of us at home know there
are going to be more taxes to pay,
and that we will be asked to dig
deeply into savings to buy bonds
and stamps by means of which the
defense bill will be paid. And should
a prolonged war be faced, it may
become necessary not only to sac
rifice luxuries but to curtail neces
sities to stay the iron heel of dic
tators who have brought to earth
the ungodly warfare which contem
plates killing of noncombatants, a
spectacle now seen across the wa
ters. These sacrifices will be made
willingly to establish the rights of
free men.
Just now the boys in the service

Locker Patrons and
Operators to Meet
Patrons of cold storage lockers, as
well as the operators are being in
vited to attend the fourth annual
Pacific Northwest Refrigerator Lock
er Operators association conference
and convention, to be held in the
Multnomah hotel at Portland Mon
day and Tuesday, April 14 and 15.
Thomas Onsdorff, secretary-treasurer
of the association and associate
professor of food industries at Ore
gon State college, has issued an
nouncements of the meeting show
ing a program arranged with more
widespread appeal than formerly.
Included among the speakers will
be one or more homemakers who
will report experiences and financial
results from the use of storage lock
ers. Approximately 260 locker plants
should be backed to the limit. The
bonds of friendship and home ties
should be kept intact as firmly as
possible. The Gazette Times wishes
to help in this, and it extends the
offer to place the name of every
Morrow county boy in the service
upon its mailing list to receive the
paper free of charge during term of
service of each, or until a pact of
peace is formulted to dissipate the
war clouds. If relatives . or friends
will bring in the names and ad
dresses we will start the paper go
ing immediately. , , ,
