Page Eight Heppner Gazette Times, Heppner, Oregon Thursday, March 23, 1939 Shooters Open Trap Tourney With 73 Heppner Rod and Gun club's team in the opening shoot of the Oregonian telegraphic trap tourney dropped two birds out of a possible perfect 75 and recorded a 73 at the local grounds, Sunday. Luke Bibby broke all of his first string of 25 to head the .team, while P. W. Ma honey and H. E. Warner registered 24 each. Only eight shooters partici pated though the day was ideal for the sport. Those shooting with birds broken out of number shot at were: Ralph Jackson 110-125, P. W. Ma honey 94-100, C. C. Carmichael 69- 75, Vivian Kane 67-75, C. A. Kane 57-75, Luke Bibby 48-50, A. D. Mc Murdo 48-50, H. C. Happold 41-50, H. E. Warner 24-25. COUNTY TEACHERS MEET Teachers from all over the county will meet at the local high school to morrow evening for a dinner meet ing. Miss Montgomery of University of Oregon will discuss, "Remedial Reading Problems and Methods of Solving Them." Other numbers on the program will be provided by Mr. Peavy and Miss Forsythe of Heppner, Mrs. Carmichael and Mr, Sherman of Lexington, Miss Tilden and Miss Messenger of Boardman, and Miss Scharf of lone. The ban quet is being served by the high school home economics club under v supervision of Miss Cecilia Nord strom. HimtiHtHiHtiHimfflimiiinmmiiHii ELKHORN WORK COMPLETED Work of renoating and remodel ing interior of the Elkhorn restau rant was completed this week. With walls and ceiling painted ivory and cream, and installation of new' low cut booths finished in mahogany and decorated in cream, the interior is especially pleasing. Peter Dufault and Les Brannon did the painting and Frank Roberts and Charlie Johnson did the carpenter work. Recent installation of new fountain and extension of lunch counter have added to the restaurant's facilities. New arrangement doubles the seat ing capacity, says Eddie Chinn, pro prietor. SET COMMUNITY SALE To more conveniently serve all the people of Morrow county, Jack Osier, community sale manager, an nounces selection of a more cen trally located point for the next sale to be held Thursday, March 30. This sale will be held at the Swift farm at Lexington, beginning at 10 o'clock a. m. Miscellaneous articles will be put on the block in the morning, and livestock will be sold in the af ternoon beginning at 1:30 with V. R. Runnion as auctioneer. E. H. Mil ler will clerk the sale. The sponsors announce that an exceptionally large amount of good livestock is being listed. OLD-TIME RESIDENT PASSES Charles Van Winkle who was a resident of Heppner at the time of the Heppner flood and who since 1924 has been city marshal at Ar lington, passed away March 14 at a hospital in The Dalles from pneu monia. Funeral services were held at Arlington Friday with interment following in the Heppner cemetery, He was a brother of William C. Van Winkle of Lexington. REHEARSALS SLATED Regular rehearsal for "The Res urrection Story," Easter cantata to be presented by combined church choirs of the city, are slated each Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:15 at the Methodist church, an nounces Russell McNeill, director. A special rehearsal will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday aternoon at the church. The presentation is slated to be given at the Methodist church on Easter Sunday evening. TYPING CONTEST SET A district high school typing con test Will be held at Arlington some time in April, announced Charles Peterson, typewriter representative, when in the city Monday from Port land. Miss Hill of Arlington is chair man of the event and schools ex pected to compete include Hepp ner, The Dalles, Condon, Fossil, Ar lington, lone, Lexington, Boardman, Irrigon, Echo and Pine City. 1 EXAMINER HERE 30TH C. M. Bentley, examiner of op erators and chauffeurs, from the of fice of Earl Snell, secretary of state, will be at the city hall in Heppner Thursday, March 30, between the hours of 1 and 4 p. m. All those de siring permits or licenses to drive cars should get in touch with Mr. Bentley at that time. HEAR MRS. Harvey Miller was named ex alted ruler of Heppner lodge 358, B. P. O. Elks, at the election held last Thursday evening. Other officers for the ensuing year will be Hubert Gaily, esteemed leading knight; Ken neth Akers, esteemed loyal knight; V. R. Runnion, esteemed lecturing knight; Loyal R. Parker, secretary; J. O. Turner, treasurer; Thos. J. Wells, tyler; C. B. Cox, trustee, and D. A, Wilson, alternate delegate to the grand lodge. TO DECIDE TENNIS HONOR A single elimination tournament will be held in the high school the coming week to decide the champ ions among the high school tennis players,, Both a boys and a girls championship will be decided. Six teen boys and eight girls have en tered. Drawings will be made and play will begin on Monday. Finals will be held Friday afternoon after school. A city bicycle ordinance closely following the recommendations of the Springfield safety council was recently adopted by the council there. The ordinance empowers en forcement agencies to impound the offender's bicycle, instead of levy ing a fine or jail sentence as is usual with older traffic violators. A Negro who was being tried for a traffic violation" in Austin, Texas, was caught slightly off base when the judge asked him what the traf fic sign "R.R." signified. "Why, dat mean 'room fo' rent'," replied the darky.
