Thursday, June 2, 1938 Mrs. Raymond Huddleston de parted Sunday for Seattle from where she expected to take the S. S. Yukon for Valdez, Alaska, to join her husband who is employed on high way work there. Miss Mary .White accompanied her, and they were joined on the way by Miss Frances White who taught the last year at Weiser, the White sisters expecting to visit at Seattle for a time. Don Cowdry, with Uncle Sam's marine corps, enjoyed a visit with Morrow county relatives and friends for several days, leaving yesterday for Portland. He recently returned from a cruise to Australia on the cruiser Louisville and at the end of his furlough will be stationed at Sand Point air base in Washington. ; His first hitch with the service will end next February. Mrs. Thelma Corley was a business visitor here from lone Tuesday. She announced that she had taken the management "of the Sunset service station and cafe at Hood River where she has moved from lone, and ex tended an invitation for all Morrow county people to stop and see her when on their way up or down the Columbia highway. Miss Kathryn Bisbee visited over the week end at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Bisbee. Miss Bisbee is county health nurse for Clackamas county and located at Oregon City. She was accompan ied to this city by Mrs. Blanche Moore of Portland who is visiting at the home of her brother, C. W. Mc Namer. Mr. and Mrs. Merle Becket were visitors the end of the week from their home at Wallowa where Mr. Becket is manager of the Wallowa branch of the First National Bank of Portland, visiting Mr. Becket's mother, Mrs. Daisy Shively, and parents of Mrs. Becket, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Thomson. Mr. and Mrs. J F Freund and daughter of The Dalles spent Me morial Day here at the home of Mrs. Freund's aunt, Mrs. Glenn Hayes. Mrs. Freund reported her mother, Mrs. Elsie Smith, as unimproved in her serious illness at The Dalles hos pital. Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Chidsey, for mer residents, were week-end guests at the home of Mrs. Chidsey's cou sin, Mrs. D. M. Ward, coming from their home at Bridal Veil. They stopped a short time on their way to Baker and John Day to visit child ren at those points. Mrs. Myles Mulligan returned home this week from a six weeks' visit to her old home section in and around Kansas City, Mo. Mr. and Mrs; S. H. Shannon with whom she journeyed east were expected to leave on the return shortly after Memorial Day. Dwight Misner was a caller here Tuesday, accompanying his son-in-law, Fred Mankin, from the farm 5n the lone district, where he and Mrs, Misner were visiting from their home at Thornton, Wash. Mr. Misner enjoyed greeting many old-time friends. Carl M. Felker of Portland is fill ing the position of clerk at the local branch, First National Bank of Port land, taking the place recently held by Harry Nelson, who, with Mrs. Nelson, has returned to Portland, Mr. Nelson's former home. James Farley expected to leave today for John Day to take charge of Wilson's store there while his brother, Johnny, goes on his vaca tion. Mr. and Mrs. John Farley ex pected to go into Canada on their vacation. Mrs. E. L. Vinton and son Dick of Coquille arrived the end of the week for a two weeks' visit with Heppner relatives and friends, being guests at the home of Mrs. Vinton's broth er, Emil Groshens. Billy Bucknum, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bucknum, underwent a tonsilectomy at a local doctor's of fice the end of the week. Heppner Mr. and Mrs. Frank C. Alfred spent the Memorial Day holidays at the homes of their families at Sil- verton and Salem, Mr. Alfred re turning to Heppner Tuesday while Mrs. Alfred stopped at The Dalles to resume her work. An over-Memorial Day party com ing up from Portland included Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Corder, Dr. Bowl by, Miss June Lockridge and AlberJ Williams. They were guests at the home of Mrs. Corder's mother, Mrs. Lillie Aiken. Mrs. O. Hilding Bengston and Miss Gladys Benge arrived Tuesday from Medford, Mrs. Bengston to visit at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Benge, and Miss Benge with her mother, Mrs. Eph Eskel son. T. J. Humphreys left for Hillsboro to spend Memorial Day, and from there expected to go on to Los An geles to visit his daughter, Miss Eve lyn Humphreys, who is located in the southern California metropolis. John Kelly was in Heppner the end of the week from his home at Pendleton, contacting local wool growers with prospect of buying their clips. He reported making sev eral purchases lately. Mr. and Mrs. Alden Blankenship and children left yesterday for Se attle where Mr. Blankenship ex pected to complete work for his mas ter's degree at University of Wash ington summer school. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Buhman and baby daughter left this week for Portland where they will spend the summer while Mr. Buhman takes work at University of Oregon exten sion smmer school. Jack Parsons, former assistant secretary to the local AAA compli ance board, has located at Ellens burg, Wash, from where he returned the end of the week for a short visit. W. H. French was in town Tues day from Blue Mountain ranch, getting his business in shape for a short trip to Portland on which he expected to leave the next day. Max Shultz has again returned to town after finishing his job of wool sacking with the Ira Hughes shear ing crew at the Wilkinson and Tom Boylen ranches last week. Miss Teresa Breslin returned to Portland Monday after spending a' two weeks' vacation with her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Breslin. She has a position in the city. Charles Cox is expected home to morrow from his studies at Oregon State college, and Miss Nancy Jane Cox, also an O. S. C. student, is ex pected Sunday. Fred Hoskins passed through town yesterday on the way from the Rhea creek ranch to the summer range near La Grande where he is moving his sheep. Dr. and Mrs. M. A. Leach of Pen dleton were Sunday visitors at the home of Mrs Leach's brother-in-law and sister, Dr. and Mrs A. D. Mc- Murdo. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Eberhardt of Tigard were over-Memorial Day visitors here. Mrs. Eberhardt was formerly Miss Stella Penland of this city. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Stevenson of Arlington were Memorial Day visitors here at the home of Mr. Stevenson's aunt, Mrs. Glenn Hayes. Mrs. B. F. Swaggart of Swaggart buttes farm and daughter, Mrs. Wheeler of Pendleton, were Memor ial Day visitors in the city Dr. J. P. Stewart, Eye-Sight Spec ialist of Pendleton, will be at the HEPPNER HOTEL on WEDNES DAY, JUNE 8th. E. H. Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Wilson of La Grande visited their folks, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wilson, over the week end. Made Kobow and Leoda Rose left Tuesday for Yakima where they will visit. H. Price and Billy Price of Hood River, enroute to La Grande, spent Saturday morning in Boardman. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Boston of Spo kane, Mrs. W. Shaw of Milu and Mrs. Harris of Freeman spent the week end at the Parsons home. Viola and Dale Macomber of Heppner who have been visiting their aunt, Mrs. Root, returned to Heppner Monday with their folks, Mr. and Mrs. Al Macomber. Willard Baker and Ernie Peck went to La Grande Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Ford and sons Dar vel and Dale spent the week end in Walla Walla. Mr. and Mrs. Harwood and Mrs. Jenkins went to Walla Walla over the week end. Lois Messenger went to The Dalles Sunday where she will visit a few days. Later she will go on to Monmouth and take a summer course. Fred Martin went to Athena over the week end. Mr. and Mrs. Urum Messenger and family of Portland visited at the Elmer Messenger home over the week end. Miss Cecelia Partlow of Portland spent the week end at home. Fred and George Griffin of The Dalles are visiting at the Miller home. Mr. and Mrs. Merritt and Mr, Truman went to Pendleton Sunday. George Corwin, Joan and Lorvin went to Hood River where the chil dren will spend the summer. Mr. Corwin went on to Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Birkford and Mrs. Hedgreen of La Grande spent Friday at the Hugg home. Mrs. Birkford who has been visiting there last week returned to La Grande with them. Rev. H. B. Thomas will hold Bible school meeting in Umatilla begin ning Tuesday evennig. Mrs. Ernie Peck, Ernabell and Shirley went to The Dalles over the week end. Essie Jones and Vernon Root went to La Grande Saturday where they remained over the week end. Mr. and Mrs. Stoner and son Billy of Seattle visited at the Claude Ston er home over the week end. Mr. and Mrs. Claud Coats and Echo motored to Hardman where they spent the week end. Mr. Coats remained there for a short visit. Lois Springer of Vancouver, Wn., is employed at Packards. Edward Skoubo and Warren Dil lon spent the week end at Hilgard. Mrs. Lowell Spagle and children, Barbara and Lowell, of Battle Moun tain spent the week end at the Packard home. Neal Bleakney and children, Ar wilda, Bob, Joe and Pat, R. W. Bleakney and Maxine Strobel mo tored to Umapine Sunday. R. W. Bleakney and Pat remained for the summer. Max and R. W. Bleakney visited the Bleakney home Tuesday. They returned to Umapine the same day. This Wednesday a joint meeting and pot luck dinner were held at the church for the Ladies Aid and H. E. C. The purpose of this meet ing was to finish up the Pollyanna club. W. McDonald returned home from Fairfield, Idaho. Mr. and Mrs. E. I. Johnson of Junction City and W. R. Courtney of Portland are visiting W. McDon ald. Mr. and Mrs. W. Collosso and family, Dante and Jessie Petrizelli went to Bridal Veil Saturday. Dante and Jessie remained there. Barney Devlin of Heppner was on the project Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Nate Macomber went to Grandview, Wash., Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Gib Pettys went to lone Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gorham, Mar dell, and Pauline Strobel went to Oregon Walla Walla, Athena and Pendleton Monday. Mrs. Esther Knight of Hood River is visiting at the Charles Nickerson home. ' J. R. Rothengerger went to Port land Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Buster Rands, Nancy and Mary Ann and Geraldine Healy went to Heppner Monday. HARDMAN NEWS Strawberry Feed Enjoyed at Hardman By OPAL HASTINGS A dinner was given Sunday night by the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs. They served strawberries,, cream and cake, coffee and chocolate, and since it .was about the first straw berries of the season everyone en joyed them immensely. Services were held at the church Sunday evening by Rev. R. V. Hin kle. There was a small gathering but in spite of this everyone enjoyed his sermon very much. Mrs. Richard Robison and Mrs. Earl Redding and daughter rode as far as Hood River with Mr. and Mrs. Carl Leathers on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Leathers will visit a day or two with Mrs. Redding in Hood River. Richard Robison, his mother, Mrs. Maud Robison, and Ted Adams drove to The Dalles in Mrs. Robison's new car, and if the cherries are ready they are going to pick for a short time, then they are going on to Port land where Richard has a very good chance of getting a job singing over the radio. Ed McDaniel returned Wednes day. He has been in Seattle and Bellingham during the last month. August Sundin returned with him for a short stay. Marvin Saddler was ill the first of the week but has improved now. Nona Inskeep left for the Jones ranch where, she will visit for a short time. Miss Frances Inskeep was ill the first of the week but she is up and improved now. Mr. and Mrs. Carey Hastings and daughters and Maxine McDaniel were business visitors in Heppner Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Merrill and daughter Ilo left for Portland where they will make a visit Mr. and Mrs. Carl McDaniel were visiting the Owen Leathers home this week. Carl McDaniel and Chas. McDaniel set traps in the mountains Monday and Mr. and Mrs. McDaniel left to go back to Lonerock Monday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Lovgren and children and Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Adams and children took Mrs. Duff rin McKitrick and Roger back to Arbuckle mountain where Duff is working Mrs. Owen Leathers is confined O Ten Years Ago (Gazette Times, May 31, 1928) Morrow county pioneers number ing 167 registered for reunion to be staged tomorrow in connection with chautauqua. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Rogers of 1 Kinzua were visiting Mrs. Rogers' parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Adams, this week. They left Monday night Mrs. Owen Leathers went to Hepp ner Tuesday to consult a doctor as she has been quite ill for two weeks. In the seventh annual news ex amination conducted by "Scholas tic," the American high school weekly, Donald O. Robinson, a pupil of Mrs. Marie Clary at Hardman Union high school, won a prize foun tain pen. Less than 5 per cent of the papers in the 650 high schools which gave the examination, scored high enough to earn this award. The pu pils who make the six best grades in the country receive a trip to Washington. Twenty-four pupils tied for this trip, and are now taking a supplementary examination.
