CRITICIZES PUBLIC REACTION
Heppner citizens were very back
ward in showing appreciation of
jthe efforts of the school band and
director when they appeared on
Main street Saturday afternoon,
believes B. F. Roddin, Pasco sheep
man who witnessed the demonstra
tion while in the city on business.
The appearance and conduct of the
band and leadership reflected a lot
of hard work, and the music was of
high caliber, deserving of a big
hand from the community, said Mr.
Roddin. He did not accuse the
community of not being apprecia
tive, but merely criticized the luke
warm applause which came from
the audience. The performance
should have drawn a much larger
crowd and a lot more enthusiasm,
he said.

The Court met in regular session
at the Court House in Heppner, on
Wednesday the 6th day of March,
1935, when were present: Wm. T.
Campbell, Judge; George N. Peck,
Commissioner; Frank S. Parker,
Commissioner, and C. W. Barlow,
Clerk.
Minutes of the previous meeting
were read and approved.
The Court approved, continued
or disallowed the various claims
presented against the county and
ordered approved claims paid by
proper warrant from the proper
funds.
Court decided that the Road Va
cation Petition of C. D. Huston et
al for the vacation of a certain road
be continued until the April term
and the County Engineer ordered
to report on same.
Court passed resolution to vacate
road from Blackhorse schoolhouse
North to New Road and also from
New Road to Duran place North
and West for two miles.
March 11. Court decided to let
the Watermaster use his own judg
ment to get the water to Lower
Willow Creek.
March 26. In the matter of dis
tribution of interest and the appor
tlonmnt of discount, the Court hav
ing been advised that other counties
in the state, including Multnomah
County, are distributing the inter
est and discount to the various tax
levying bodies, on the basis of the
amount of taxes collected for each
of said bodies, and it appearing to
the Court that this is the most prac
tical method for distributing the
said Interest and, discount, and that
each tax levying body will receive
substantially its proportionate share
of said interest and will pay its pro
portionate share of the discount,
under this method,
It is ordered that the Tax Collec
tor be authorized to use this method
for distribution, effective as of Jan
uary 1, 1935.
It having been brought to the at
tention of the Court by the auditors,
Wells & DeLap, that the practice
which has been followed for many
years by the Court and the Clerk,
of issuing warrants for monthly
salaries of county officials and depu
ties, and for payment of mothers'
pensions, and for payment of cer
tain rentals, and other monthly al
lowances, without claims having
been presented to the Court each
month and passed upon by the
Court, has resulted In loose methods
of accounting and record keeping,
and does not conform to sound bus
iness practice, -;
It Is therefore ordered that the
Clerk present a list of all salaries
payable; and a claim for each am
ount payable for rent, or other
monthly . expenditures, and that
warrants In payment of salaries,
mothers' pensions, and other mon
thly claims be Issued by the clerk
only after the same have been ap
proved by the county court.
The order of the County Court as
of the date of February 7, 1934, al-
garding the mileage fees collected
by the Sheriff is hereby rescinded
and the Sheriff Is hereby ordered
to turn all mileage collected to the
County Treasurer and to bill the
County Court each month for the
amount of the same.
The order of the County Court as
of the date of February ,7 1934, al
lowing: the Deputy Sheriff at Board-
man to keep the money collected for
the sale of temporary motor licen
ses as pay for his services is hereby
rescinded and said deputy is hereby
iff all monies collected for this and
payment for his services will be
arranged by the County Court
Court ordered Sheriff to advertise
and sell at public auction as provid
ed by law the following described
parcel of land, and at not less than
the minimum price as set out, to
wit: Lots 4 and 5, Block 17 of the
town of Lexington, and for the min
imum price of $200.00; $50.00 down
and three equal annual payments,
with interest at the rate of 6 per
cent. All taxes to be paid by the
purchaser.
March 30. Whereas, Morrow
County has effected a settlement
with the Bonding Company in the
mattter of the balance of county
funds In the Bank of lone, defunct,
and
Whereas, the balance of said ac
count is carried on the books of the
County Theasurer in the amount of
$6,894.07, the sum of $5,000.00 hav
ing been received from the bonding
company in settlement thereof,
Now, therefore, it is hereby or
dered that the County Treasurer
charge general fund in the amount
of $1,894.07, representing the net
loss on the account with the said
Bank of lone.
The Court accepted bid of Mor
row County Grain Growers, Inc.,
lone, Ore., for forty tons No. 1 slack
coal for Court House at $7.10 per
ton, if coal is loaded on or before
March 31, 1935, or if freight is
raised, at $7.60 per ton f. o. b. Hepp

The Christian Endeavor gave a
party in the Community church last
Friday evening. Several young peo
ple attended and all had a good
time.
The Home Economics club will
meet at the home of Mrs. Warner
next Wednesday, April 10th.
Mr. and Mrs. Jay A. Cox and fam
ily of Yakima visited with relatives
in Boardman over the week end.
Mr. Cox is employed with the Wash
ington highway department.
Mr. and Mrs. Guy Barlow and
Chloe were business visitors In Pen
dleton last Friday.
A number of people on the pro
ject have been having the flu the
past week.
Mr. and Mrs. Al Macomber of
Heppner were visiting in Boardman
during the week end with friends
and relatives
The high school gave a dance last
Saturday evening in the gym. A
large crowd attended and all had a
good time. Nate's Jazz band fur
nished the music. Those who play
m tnis band are Mrs. Carl Nelson,
Miss Mary Harney, Ted Wilson,
Theron Anderson and Nate Macomber.
Teachers' Institute was held In
Boardman last Friday. This was
a meeting of all the teachers in
Morrow county. The program was
as follows: Registration; music by
Boardman orchestra, directed by
Mr. Anderson; invocation by Rev.
Thomas; announcements by Mrs.
Kodgers; Supervised Study, Mr. Ev
ans; Recreation, Mr. Winter; Af
ternoon Group singing, Mr. Beach
leader; O. S. T. A. reports by Mr.
Beach; business meeting, Mr. Bloom
president; address by Dr. Dexter
M. Keezer, president Reed college,
Committee chairmen were: Music,
Mr. Beach; Athletics, Mr. Winter:
Typing, Miss Brownson; Spelling,
Mrs. Brown; Testing, Mr. Ingles
Institute, Mr. Ingles. Lunch was
served by the P. T. A. in the cafeteria.
Norma Gibbons spent the week
end with her mother. She came
down for teachers' institute and re
turned to her school Sunday afternoon.
Mrs. Cartwright spent the week
end in Baker.
Mrs. W. O. King spent several
days in Salem last week attending
a school pertaining to classes she
is now conducting in town.
A large crowd attended the Hob
Nob social and Jitney supper which
was given by the Ladies Aid last
Tuesday night in the community
church. A good time was reported
by all.
The Red & White store was
moved to the bank room in the bank
building last Friday night. The
grange remodeled the room and put
in store shelving.
Henry Graves was called to The
Dalles last Friday night on account
of the serious illness of his wife.
Guy Barlow and Jay Cox took him
down.
Marvin Ransier who hag been
visiting in Portland returned to
Boardman Tuesday of this week,
WILLOWS GRANGE NEWS.
A new 4-H club was organized
Sunday at the home of Mrs. O. L.
Lundell. This club will be known
at the J. U. G. sewing club. Newly
elected officers are Hattie Van
Schoiack, president; Eileen Farley,
vice-president; Francis Farley, secretary-treasurer.
Mrs. Velma Wil
kin will serve as assistant leader
and Mrs. Lundell as leader. Blanche
Sharard will serve as club reporter,
The girls plan to make sports
suits as first project In conjunction
with the regular outlined schedule
to be sent by the college. As there
are not enough grade girls to organ
ize a club they will register as individuals.
The next meeting of the J. U. G.
sewing club will be held Sunday af
ternoon, April 7th, at the home of
Mrs. Lundell at which time Mrs.

L. Lamoreaux has been qute ill the
last week.
Calvin Allen came home from the
CCC camp for a visit but left again
Saturday for Monument where he
will work this season for his grand
father, George Hux. Mr. Hux had
the misfortune to injure his arm
some time ago and is very slow in
recovering.
Edith and Carl Chaney are visit
ing their aunt, Mrs. Virginia
Chaney.
Leroy Minnick and Marjorie Wil
liams have both been absent from
school ths week on account of ill
ness. School was not in session Friday
as the teachers were attending in
stitute at Boardman.
Mr. and Mrs. Russell McCoy mo
tored to lone Sunday and spent the
day with Mrs. Miller's father, Mr.
Akers and family.
Mrs. Fred Reiks called on Mrs. J.
Grabiel Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Kendler of
Umatilla visited Mr. and Mrs. Earl
Isom Sunday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Russell McCoy were
Pendleton visitors Wednesday.
Among the shoppers in Hermiston
Saturday were Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Brace, Wayne Caldwell, Mr. and
Mrs. Scarlett, Mrs. Suddarth, Mr.
and Mrs. Ellis and son Dorman.
Bobby Brace is suffering with
blood poisoning in his hand from a
bruise. He is under the care of a
doctor at Hermiston.
Mrs. W. C. Isom visited Mrs Mc
Reynolds at Hermiston Saturday
evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith en
tertained eight couples at their
home Saturday evening. The eve
ning waa spent in playing pinochle,
and a very pleasant time was en
joyed by all.
