THE MORNING OREGONIAN, A admittedly one of the finest news papers in the United States, is prone to keep its editorial head in the clouds. As a general policy this might be a good thing, but when it reaches the point of whitewash ing a system fraught with dangers to the common weal, there is grave room for doubt Portland's good newspaper, in a recent editorial, paints with wings all persons who serve their state in responsible positions without pay. It defames as blackguards any who dare "carp pettily" about any policy or action of such state officials. Such carping is generally based on selfish interests pooh! pooh! pa! doop! It is a grand, magnanimous thing for anyone to be so imbued with public spirit as to sacrifice his per sonal fortunes for the benefit of his fellow men. But the picture is too Ohristlike. It rises above the heads of mortals. What is the use of winking at reality? Doubtless many persons do take penurious state jobs from sheer philanthropy. Doubtless many are conscientious In their ef forts to do that which is best for everyone. But what incentive is there for them to do so? Especial ly when they are paid only with "petty carping"? Could not a man be just as con. scientious and feel better about do ing it, and at the same time be re iieved from the liability of false ac cusation, if he were remunerated for his services in accordance with the exactions demanded of him? Certainly giving large sums of mon ey into the keeping of anyone, with out giving him protection, is throw ing temptation in his path in a big way, and It has been known to lead righteous, conscientious men astray. Yes, ye holy Oregonian editor, this newspaper has been guilty of petty carping. It can only carp pettily, having a comparatively small audience. But it will continue to carp at infractions of the rights of its citizens. Sometimes the smaller the person, the louder he must shout to make himself heard, A GOOD CHOICE. "PHE selection by the state board of higher education of a chan cellor to head the state's higher ed ucational institutions is most for tunate. No man has contributed more to higher education in the Sunday School u Lesson u By Rev. Charles E. Dunn, D. D. Israel Journeying Toward Canaan Lesson for September 11 Numbers 10:11-36. Golden Text: Numbers 10:29 The children of Israel occupied about forty years in their wander ings toward the land of promise. It is surprising how uneventful was their wilderness sojourn, although it was of supreme importance in laying the foundations of their re ligion and culture, and so prepar ing them for the momentous changes of their later history. For the most part their life was fairly settled, with headquarters at Kadesh, a holy shrine on the south ern border of the promised land, with an exceptional spring of water, Our lesson describes the departure of the Israelites from Mt. Sinai where they had camped nearly a year, giving, in detail, the order of the twelve tribes in the route of march. Then comes the charming episode of Moses appeal to the father-in law Hobab, elsewhere called Jethro, to act as guide. A member of the nomadic clan of Kenites or Midian ltes, he was thoroughly acquainted with the country through which the chosen people desired to pass. It la evident that he finally yielded to his son-in-law's urgent entreaty despite his Initial blunt refusal That his services were not forgot ten is indicated by Saul's counsel, many years later, to the Kenites' to separate themselves from the ene my he was about to attack, because they, doubtless through Hobab, had been kind to his own folk. (See I Samuel 15:6.) The Golden Text, "Come thou with us, and we will do thee good," the greeting of Moses to Hobab, it one of the Bible's gracious invita tions. Hobab was a foreigner, but he Is promised complete equality of treats ment. "Come and be a pair of eyes for us," pleads Moses, to quote Mof fatt's graphic translation, "and as the Eternal prospers us, so wiU we prosper you." The Church of God might well make use of the Hobabs outside Its fold capable of guiding Its thinking into new areas of experiment. Let every household of faith welcome uch with open arms in the gener ous affection of the Golden Text. 1 Pa state than William Jasper Kerr. He has proved himself in Oregon. He is familiar with Oregon conditions and the impending educational problems facing its institutions. He is big enough to serve the entire state; to overlook petty local strife. He has builded and will continue to build as long as his energies last for the advancement of education in Oregon Though he may be ac cused of belonging to the state col lege, it will be found that he truly belongs to Oregon. A man of broad vision, commanding person ality and a heart big enough for humanity, he has a business genius entirely capable of meeting the higher educational crisis now con fronting the state. In paying Mr. Kerr this high tribute, there is no intention of making comparisons. Should the state lose the services of Arnold Bennett Hall, resigned president of its state university, it would be un fortunate. Mr. Hall has proved him self an educator of the highest cal iber. He has builded wisely and well at the university. His ideals are well founded. His bigness is best evidenced by the whole-hearted cooperation he has given the board of higher education in its task at hand. Should the board of higher education choose to keep Mr. Hall as resident head of the university, and should Mr. Hall choose to re main, the state would be very for tunate. It is to be hoped that the principles he has inculcated into the unversity have so taken root in the minds of the people of Ore gon that they will choose to retain the identity of that institution when they cast their ballots at the No vember election.
