THERE is a different tone notice able in the conversation of busi ness men in the past week or two. Instead of wondering how much deeper into the financial hole the country was going to get, more peo ple are expressing confidence that business is going to get better very soon. This is a very hopeful sign. The principal trouble with the general situation lately has been lack of confidence on the part of those who have money. They have been un willing to spend their money, to invest it where it would be doing useful work, because of the feeling that perhaps, after all, prices had not yet touched bottom. That has been one serious drawback to a speedier recovery, and another has been the fact that a great many banks and financial institutions, perfectly sound in the long run, have had so much of their deposit ors' money tied up in sceurities which cannot quickly be realized on that they have been unable to ex tend the lines of credit which are absolutely necessary for the normal course of business. We think Mr. Hoover did perhaps the wisest thing that he has done in his career as President, when he called leading bankers into confer ence and with their assistance worked out a plan for providing credit beyond what the banks ex tend. And in calling in leaders of both parties in Congress to reassure the country that this project was not a partisan bid for popularity. but a genuine, patriotic effort to save the nation from worse trouble, he acted with a breadth of vision which must meet with the approval of people of all parties. It looks at this time as if the $500,000,000 credit which the bank ers' committee, under the Hoover plan, has arranged for, would turn the trick. It certainly has given the country, at large, a better feel ing. While it cannot, in the nature of things, start all the factory wheels turning instantly and put evervbodv back to work at once, it ought to speed up the resumption of industrial operations very ma- etrially. GOVERNMENT AND THE RAILROADS Autocaster Service. THE railroads are asking for a fifteen per cent increase in freight rates. They make this ap peal on the basis of the fact that they have not, in recent years, been able to earn the percentage on their investments which they are per mitted to earn under the interstate commerce law. It has been esti mated that the increased rates would cost every Amercian family I! NOTICE OF SHERIFF'S SALE UNDER EXECUTION. But we are living in a different age; I don't call anybody a fool because he spreads a feast if he can afford it; the very much bigger fool is the fellow that gorges himself at the feast- Last evening, (very much against my better judgment), I accepted an invitation to dine at 6 o'clock with a professional brother our wives were in attendance. The cares of the day were past and gone; it was time for recreation that is so es sential to the brain worker. Ev ery one in the happy group, except myself, adored the six o'clock din ner, and indulged in it at every op portunity. To say that this was a fine, sump tuous meal, does not half describe the setting. It was a triumph of culinary skill the quantity was limited to capacity only. Incidentally, one of the physicians present said he was a little ticklish about coffee he had a blood-pressure of something over 200, and was a bit apprehensive about it; he was only sixty, and looked forty-five. Yet, he was being seriously threat ened. My wife and I went to the party in a neighbor physician's car. As we came home at 10:30 P. M., the doctor said to me, "I've had to be a little guarded lately; Mrs. C and I are both developing hign oiooa-pressures." Just one thing, dear reader: THE SIX O'CLOCK DINNER. Protein poisoning, from the absorption of excessive amounts of undigested food. A heavy meal, partaken of when the mind and body were tired and needed rest. REST. Stomachs compelled to work when relaxed and weakened from mental and physical tire. Such a meal for BREAKFAST would have done no harm! The digestive organs rested from seven or eight hours of refreshing sleep, But, after this fine, sumptuous, six o'clock, dinner, every guest awak ened next morning with little or no appetite, feeling heavy, mentally foggy, lack of vim and energy for the new day's work. When shall we wise up? a day in the increased commodities. For, of every increase in the cost Sunday Schoo :::: Lesson an International Sunday School Lesion for November L WORLD'S TEMPERANCE SUNDAY Galatians 6:13-26 Rev. Samuel D. Price, D. D. Special interest will center in a discussion of organized liquor traf fic for this World's Temperance Sunday. The date is fixed to occur on the Sunday preceding the usual election day In the United States. Plenty of up to date facts will be found in the newspapers. Two books are suggested for special re search. They are PROHIBITION AT ITS WORST by Prof. Irving Fisher, and PROHIBITION AND COMMON SENSE. "Galatians," from which the les son is taken, comes naturally be fore us as it is one of the letters written by Paul from Corinth dur ing his third missionary Journey. It is always interesting to note how the Bible, written so long ago, meets the Issues in every-day living at the present time. The biggest argu ment put forth by those who want to sell alcohol, which is always la belled POISON, Is that of personal llbertv. Paul writes here about "freedom," but makes the distinc tion between using it as "an occa sion of the flesh" or "through love, be servants of one another." Chris tianity teaches that we are to give ud our individual -rights that we mav be of real help to humanity, Wickednesses are listed under "lust of the flesh" and it is the use of liauor which dulls mental activ ity that aggravates all the sins that are named. In marked contrast the "fruit of the Spirit" is pictured, Almost unbelievable progress has been made in temperance reform during the past twenty years. The Eighteenth Amendment is enforced to at least 60 per cent and 80 per rent enforcement of any law Is very good. When those who call themselves Christian demand bet ter enforcement it will come. one cent price of course. of transportation must be reflected in the selling price of the goods carried. At first glance, this looks to many like an unfair attempt to raise prices at a time when purchasing power is low. But on the other side of the picture there are other things to consider. If the increase in rates will enable the railroads to maintain full working forces of em ployees without wage reductions, then it is unquestionable that this increased railroad revenue would be beneficial to everybody in the United States. It must be remem bered also that the railroads never had the opportunity to make large profits when times were flush. The percentage that they can earn as profits is strictly limited by law. So far as we know, that provision of the law has been properly enforced. But by limiting what the railroads can earn in the best of times, it seems to us that the government has put itself under an obligation to help them out of their troubles in hard times. They are not on the same basis with private industries which are not operated in the pub lic Interest. The business which is permitted to make enormous prof its if it can, is entitled to no par ticular public assitance when its profits decline. But the railroads, as an essential factor in the free exchange of commodities, are in different position. services at the Methodist church at He.rmiston Sunday, Brother Carl Alquist preached his farewell sermon at the community church Sunday evening.
