MTMBEB IA GRANDE DISTRICT NEWS PASSES. SUSPENDING publication of the La Grande District News by its publisher, George Huntington Cur ry, is noted regretfully. Mr. Curry published a clean, live weekly pa per which was appreciated in La Grande, but let it drop as a busl ness failure. He said: "In many ways I sincerely regret discontinuing publication, yet I also feel a great relief in the prospect of escaping from the continuous grind of attempting the impossible, While I have believed there was a need for a county-wide weekly pa per, I have been unable to discover any plan of operation that would financially justify the effort "The District News has been giv- en liberal patronage by advertisers and subscribers for which we are truly appreciative, but in spite of such loyal support, the irreducible overhead expense has exceeded the income to such an extent that it is out of the question to longer con tinue publishing the paper." Mr. Curry published the Bulletin at Arlington before going to La Grande, and made many acquain tances here, who may also note with interest Mr. Curry's intention or becoming an independent candi date for TJ. S. senator in the com ing election. THE TURNING TIDE. Autocaster Service. THE public is beginning to buy again. Money is coming back into circulation more freely than for a year or more past The tex tile mills are coming back toward normal production. The leather in dustry is showing a decided im provement Sales of electric and gas refrigerators are increasing in almost every part of the country. Many of the smaller industrial plants are now running on full time and the larger industries, or many of them, are putting on more help. The steel industry and build ing construction are still at low ebb and the railroads are not car rying their normal volume of freight and passengers, but those are conditions which a general re vival in other lines will remedy. The country is still suffering from overproduction of wheat cotton and oil, among other things. It seems to us wrong and wasteful, however, to destroy what has al ready been produced, as is being advocated in some quarters. It also seems to us unnecessary to resort to anything like the "dole" system. TURNING TO THE GENTILES. Acts 13:42-63; Romans 1:14-16. Rev. Samuel D. Price, D. D. Genuinely good people can have a difference of opinion. An argument that will always remain a part of history occurred over John Mark at Perga in Pamphylla. At that point it became necessary for Paul and Barnabas to proceed into the interior and the handy man of the evangelistic party declined to go with them. Perilous times awaited the deter mined evangelists as they went for ward on this first missionary Jour ney. Many Jewish settlements had been made in Asia Minor owing to a system of colonization developed by Antiochug Epiphanes. A syna gogue was easily found in Antioch of Pisidia. There were no less than 10 Antiochs founded by Selucus Nikator and named after his fath er Antiochus. We need distinguish only between those in Pisidia and Syria. Marked attention was given in the address of Paul on that first sabbath. Many begged that the visitors tarry with them and repeat the teachings about Jesus Christ being the Messiah on the following saDoatn. inis was done and the entire chapter 13 should be read with care for all the details. Meanwhile the Jews saw the Im port of this new teaching and if It prevailed their long established sys tem would need to be modified, for Paul taught that many items had been fulfilled. There may be more who will need help the coming winter because their reserves are exhaust ed, but there will be more people in a position to give help, we believe. And there will be more and more jobs for those who really want to work. How fast the tide of good times will come in nobody can predict The country has been suffering al most as much from over-prediction as from over-production, and we are not gifted with the power of prophecy. But we have history to back our belief that the United States of America will come out of this depression, as it has come out of every ' preceding depression, stronger and more powerful than ever. A BANKER'S ADVICE. (Astoria Astorlan-Budget) BANKERS have a reputation for being hard-headed business men, basing their deductions on proven facts. The following, published in the American Bankers' magazine, is sound advice: "No business man in any town should allow a newspaper published in his town to go without his name and business being mentioned somewhere in it's columns. This does not mean that you should have a whole page, half or even a quar ter page ad in each issue of the pa per, but your name and business should be mentioned. A stranger. picking up a newspaper, should be able to tell what business is repre sented in a town by looking at a paper. This is the best possible town advertiser. The man who does not advertise does an injus tice to himself and the town. The man who insists on sharing the bus iness that comes to town, but re fuses to advertise his own, is not a valuable addition to any town. The life of a town depends on the live wideawake and liberal advertising business men." HARNEY VALLEY IRRIGATION GIVEN BOOST IN NEW REPORT Development of more profitable agriculture in the vast Harney val ley through irrigation from wells appears feasible from the stand point of water supplies, according to a preliminary report on the ground water survey in progress there just received by the soils department of the Oregon Experi ment station. Though two years more of study will be necessary before the federal geological survey specialists, work ing in cooperation with the state experiment station, can make a def inate estimate of the quantity of water available, the preliminary re port describes two main sources of ground water which promise to yield sufficient water to make more extensive irrigation from wells feasible. Copies of the complete preliminary report may be had by writing to the experiment station. Bert Palmateer, wife and chil dren were in the city for a short while Saturday afternoon from their farm home near Morgan. Mr. Palmateer harvested a fair crop of good wheat this season and is in clined to hold on to it, awaiting a better price which he feels is sure to come before a great while. NOTICE TO CREDITORS.
