Ulr ever, have been so hurt by the drought that they will not pay to harvest, the heat wave having come along just in the critical time and the grain dried up in the heads; yet this will not be sufficient to cut the total yield in the county heavily. From present indications, our guess is about a 70 per cent crop for Mor row county this year. James Higgins was in Heppner Monday from down on Butter creek where everything seems pret ty well dried out because of the recent hot weather. Range has been short and crops are not prospering. Notice is hereby given that by virtue of an Execution issued out of the Cir cuit Court of the Slate of Oregon for Morrow County, dated May 25th, 1931, In that certain suit wherein The Fed eral Land Bank of Spoknae, a corpora tion, as plaintiff, recovered a judgment agnnist the defendant. Last fall, when the pre paration of the budget was being r,irferAd and sometime prior to that, there was agitation that this office be discontinued, but when the final action was taken by the bud- .remittee the necessary sum to perpetuate the work for another year went in, ana whh pruviueu. for the maintenance of the county health nurse work. The nurse was retained, and it was generally con airiered a closed incident, at least for the present year; so the court action came as a surprise iu a vcij lorn mimhpr nf taxDavers the nnvmtv over. Tho court seems to have been prompted to take this action at this time solely from the standpoint of economy, as they have been entirely satisfied, so they say, with the work done by Miss Stallard, whom they recognize as very efficient, and a tireless worker. They believe that hn has ureomulished much good in maintaining the general health conditions oi tne various uroaa a-u rural communities, and their action has not been for personal consider ations whatever. The demand, these times, comes stronger and stronger all the while for every possible economy, whether it be in private or nublic affairs, and the court ftpprrta now to be headed in the di rection of cutting at every possible angle. For this they are to be commended, yet we regret very much that it has been found neces sary to apply the axe to the office of countv health nurse has proven are a very valuable asset, and their health is entitled to have the great est consideration at all times. We do not hesitate to say that the office of county helath nurse has proven its value far bevond what it has cost the taxpayers to maintain it in the marked improvement in general and special health conditions. H. V. SWIFT PASSES. THE untimely passing of Arthur V. Swift, native son of Baker county, brings a loss to the entire commonwealth, while being in the nature of a severe tragedy to the people of his home community. He had become prominent the state over, especially among the fanning communities, as for years he was interested in promoting their wel fare through the agencies of the Farmers Union and Grange; his services in the state legislature at Salem also proved his further worth, and he was looked upon as being a true friend of the taxpayers, voting against unnecessary appro priations when it was not always popular to do so. In this county, J Mr. Swift was well known, and ' many friends here will sincerely re-. gret his passing. Speaking of Mr. Swift more inti mately, we have this from the Bak er Herald of Saturday: "Baker county will have a hard time replacing Arthur Swift in the legislature. We doubt if his equal can be found, for he combined many valuable qualities, a long back ground of experience in public af fairs, close contact with the toilers whose needs he thoroughly under stood, and an acquaintance that went far beyond the boundaries of this commonwealth. He was pecu liarly well fitted to represent our people in the legislative halls and he was almost certain to be pre vailed upon to return there, had he lived, even though hsi personal in clination would probably have been to retire. "But legislative service was not his only claim to distinction. Many years of his life were spent In Far mers Union work. For etght years he was a national vice president of this great organization. In that ca pacity he visited every county in the United States, and so phenom enal was his memory that he could Instantly recall the name of any county in the entire nation, and there are several thousand, Its county seat, important rivers if any, and usually the railroads serv ing It This writer once sought to test him out by asking of his own native county in Wisconsin and was amazed to get not only the fore going information but the names of all the surrounding counties and the exact area in square miles. Many doubted bis reported geographical knowledge, but never after they put it to a practical test Probably no other man In America equalled him In this respect" General crop conditions in Mor row county have been somewhat Improved by the slight showers of the week and the cooling of the temperature.
