KEEP t'P THE GOOD WORK THE RED CROSS is making its annual appeal for funds. In a Seals of the Association for the Prevention of Tuberculosis will be. otterea ev erywhere. Ths are two noble causes. which everyone ought to contribute. The work of the Red Cross is con- t:nxe Wherever there is life to be saved, homeless to be sheltered, ,.iHrv, nf rntjistronhe to be recloth- ed fed, and started out anew in life, the Red Cross is the first ir. tvio field and the one which does the most good. By vir- ,,. nf his office, the president the United States, whoever he may be, is also president of the Red Cross. It is, in effect, an unofficial arm of the Federal government. The recent drought gave the Red Cross an opportunity for service. So did the Mississippi flood of a couple of years ago, the hurricane disaster in Florida, Porto Rico and Santo Domingo. And hundreds of minor disasters, constantly occur ring, keep the organization busy. It has no money except what the public gives. The work of the Tuberculosis or ganization is of almost equal im portance. Tuberculosis is diminish ing, but only because of the con stant watchfulness and educational work of the devoted men and wo men who are giving their lives to that work. Buying Christmas seals for a cent apiece is an easy and practical way for everybody to help. physical condition had been amel iorated. We are all too prone today to take all of the credit for mater ial progress to ourselves. Few to day rely upon Divine Providence to take care of them, in spite of the express promise: Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you. Our faith is less simple than that of our forebears. We do not look for direst and instantaneous ans wer to prayer. But down deep in our hearts we, as a people, still believe that somehow, if each does his individual best to live up to the spirit of religion, he will not suffer for lack of food and shelter and the normal comforts of life. There is still faith in the words of the Psalmist: "I have been young, and now I am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed becging bread." This particular Thanksgiving Day of 1930 seems to us to be one upon which the religious origin of the occasion should be kept in mind. We have been through a hard year. We are still not "out of the woods" so far as material prosperity is concerned. But we have lost noth ing which counts if we have not lost the faith in ourselves, in our neigh bors, in our Nation and its ultimate high destiny, which all of our his tory justifies. So long as we hold to that faith and continue to be lieve that something higher than human power is still guiding us, we have every cause to be thankful. PATRIOTISM. WITH control of Congress equally divided as between Republic ans and Democrats, there is some thing both novel and refreshing In the offer of seven Democratic lead ers to cooperate with President Hoover and the Republican party in every legislative effort to relieve economic conditions and restore prosperity. This seems to us to be a symbol of a new era In American party pol itics. The Democrats reserve their right to take sharp issue with the Administration and with the Re publican legislators on all matters which are part of their party's pro gram. But on subjects which are not partisan in their nature they promise what amounts to a coali tion government There are hundreds of such ques tions to be decided by every session of Congress. It has been the cus tom in the past for the party whose representative does not occupy the White House to oppose everything which the Administration wants, regardless of its merits. In the past this has resulted in delay and some times the complete failure of pro grams which would have benefitted everybody, merely because their sponsors were of a different polit ical faith. Legislation has been partisan rather than business-like. We hope both parties will prove their patriotism by living up to the promises which the Democrats have made and the Republicans have ac cepted. ANCE more the people of the Uni- vted States have been called upon bv their President to observe the last Thursday in November as a day on which to give thanks for the manifold blessings which we have been vouchsafed. . Thanksgiving is one of the few davs which is celebrated as a holi day in everv part of the United States. Of New England origin datine back to the days of the Ply mouth Colonies, more than 300 years ago, its appropriateness has appealed to all America. For we of this country have been more abundantly blessed than have been the people of any other na tion in the world. We may grum ble at "hard times" and point to inequalities as between man and man, and think we are pretty badly off, but we must remember that by comparison with any other part of the world we are exceedingly well off. that the inequalities which div ide out people into the successful and unsuccessful are far less mark ed than the inequalities which exist elsewhere between the upper and the lower classes. The Pilgrim Fathers gave thanks to God on Thanksgiving Day for material blessings with which their The picture of a suffering asth-! matic is most striking. The patient cannot lie down; he sits up, leaning lightly forward, breathes laborious- sweats cold, clammy drops, can talk with great difficulty. The at tack may simulate death, though not as a rule dangerous at the time. The family physician will be able to tell whether it is labored breath ing of heart disease, or whether the patient has serious kidney disorder. True asthma is of broncmal origin, and attacks when the patient is run-down from worry, or from some hidden diseased process. Changes of season may induce asth matic attacks.! I was called "on the run" to see my first asthmatic, whom his com panions thought was dying sure en ough a fat old German who him self was frightened within an inch of his life; I gave him three or four deep whiffs of chloroform, which stopped the attack almost instantly and it made for me a reputation as if I had performed a miracle! NOTICE OF DISTRICT BOAS MEETING. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, pur suant to a petition of the requisite num ber of legal voters of Road District Number Two (2) of Morrow County, State of Oregon, and an order of the County Court of the State of Oregon This attack wa3 due to spasmodic contraction of the lesser bronchial passages, on a damp, chilly evening; the chloroform at once stopped tne spasm, and breathing returned to normal. A point that determines the true asthmatic state is, the patient In hales quickly and easily, but he can not exhale; the air gets out of .the lung with great difficulty and slow ly; the sufferer feels that his lungs will burst from air in them which cannot get out! . , Of course, a physician should be called for the asthma sufferer; there is no valuable "family remedy" though certain leaves, burned in a metal plate, give off smoke which is often effectual in quieting the spasm and drying up the load of mucous exudate which lines the tubes. Such "cures" do not remove the cause, of course that is left for the doctor to combat A hypo of morphine and atropine usually dismisses the attack, but is a habit former. The athmatic should carry tablets of "Luminal" and use as the physician directs. During the past .summer tree sit ting became a fad with many ambi tious youths, and even some wo men, who wanted to establish a new kind of record. Zacchaeus also used a tree when he had a supreme purpose in mind. It was while Jesus was passing through Jericho for the last time. Curiosity was doubtless the mo tive that impelled him to get a Bicht of the Nazarene, about Whom he had heard so much. When he tried to press near the bystanders would be none too gentle in elbow ing him away. Then our man of determination ran around the crowd seeking some point of vantage on the road whither the company would pass. A sycamore tree with Its outreaching, low-hanging bran ches revealed the possibility of an unobstructed view and to this place he climbed. No matter how busy Jesus had been In meeting the outcries of in dividuals who needed help He al ways was aware of every one else in the crowded throng. When in sicht of the tree-sitter He looked un wtih recognition. Then the un paralleled thing occurred as Jesus in a kindly manner called Zacchaeus bv name. There was still greater amazement when the Passerby in vited Himself to be the Guest that day of the man who was held In contempt by the entire community. When in the presence of Jesus there Is Instantly the consciousness of unworthlnesB. Involuntarily there is effort to measure up to His Idea of righteousness. A quick audit of his record as tax collector revealed the excesses that had taken place in his ollice. What he had was wrongly gained called for restitu tion.
