WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT ends a lifetime of public service In his retirement from the Supreme Court bench, and the name of Charles Evans Hughes is added to the roster of great Americans who have filled the post which many re gard as greater than even that of President, Chief Justice of the Su preme Court of the United States. Thirty different men have been Presidents. Only eleven have been Chief Justice, including Mr. Hughes. Mr. Taft is the only man in our history who has filled both posts. He brought to the Supreme Bench a record of public service. After serving his native city as public attorney and a judge, he became, successively. Solicitor General of the United States, United States Cir cuit Judge, Governor-General of the Philippines, Secretary of War, Pro vincial Governor of Cuba, then President of the United States, and after eight years as a Professor at Yale University, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Mr. Taft was fortunate in being independent of financial considera tions. Mr. Hughes, who succeeded him, has had to make his own way in the world. Mr. Taft had the happy faculty of holding himself aloof from partisan strife and even his political opponents never dis played toward him the bitterness which others in similar situations have aroused. Mr. Hughes has been more of a storm-center, but none has ever challenged his devotion to his country's interests nor question ed his ability as one of the really great lawyers and jurists of Amer ica. His service as Secretary of State and as a Justice of the Court which he now heads have been step ping stones toward his present ex alted post As the Chief Justice of the United States he is above and removed from party strife and there will be few, if any, who will not concede that in naming him as the successor to Jay, Marshall, Chase, Fuller, and the other illustrious Americans who were his predeces sors, President Hoover has made the best possible choice. LYING ADVERTISEMENTS. THE Federal Trade Commission has taken another step toward truth in advertising. It has obtain ed from a prominent cigarette man ufacturer the promise not to use any longer a class of misleading statements to the general effect that smoking its particular brand of cig arettes promotes health and helps women to keep slender. The advertising complained of was particularly flagrant "Testi monials" signed by actresses and motion picture stars were published which were themselves untruthful and which, in some cases, the sup posed authors had never seen be fore they were published, although they accepted money for the use of their names. The actresses, the commission reports, "were not cig arette smokers and did not stay tmiiag t)aai Vaaam International Sunday School Lesson for February 18 JESUS HEALING AND HELPING Matthew 9:1-13. Rev. Samuel D. Price, D.D. Jesus was surely the news item of his day. He is now in the midst of His public ministry and multi tudes are talking about Him. In the middle of His long ministry in Gal ilee people are coming to this Won der Worker from all directions. They are interested in His words, for he has a new type of teaching, but they are far more concerned with the things He does, which are so contrary to nature. Adults as well as small boys are alert to see something out of the ordinary. Mat thew has the habit of grouping sim ilar events and we find a massing of miracles in chapters 8-9. From the standpoint of Jesus these were signs to help authenticate His teach ings. The people were, even so, very slow of heart to believe. The general location is Capernaum and the Sea of Galilee. Read the par allel passages in Mark 2 and Luke 5. Men of Galilee besought Him to depart from their midst when He cast out the evil spirit from the man who had been possessed. They rated their lost swine at higher val ue than the good of a man. It is a joy to read that the people of the Capernaum side were eager to have Him return. They had need of His help and at once began to bring their, sick to Him for healing. Crowds fill the place where He Is speaking, but that does not prevent unuBUal activities on the part of the four who are seeking to bring their paralyzed friend Into His presence. A very Important personal study is to consider "A corner of the bed." When four people will work with equal energy to Introduce one to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ there will be equal success to-day. When the Healer "saw their slender through the smoking of the respondent's cigarettes." "In truth and In fact" says the trade commission, "health and vig or to men, slender figures to wo men, and reduction of flesh in all cases, will not necessarily result from the smoking of respondent's brand of cigarettes." Whatever may be anyone's per sonal ideas on the subject of cig arettes, the fact remains that their use has become so wellnlgh univer sal that nobody any longer takes seriously the occasional effort to punish either the sellers or the smo kers. But the claim that cigarette smoking is beneficial to health is absurd on its face, and to attempt to uphold such a claim by lying "testimonials" is a kind of sharp practice which makes one wonder how much truth there Is in the con tention that modern business, es pecially "big" business, is conducted on higher standards of honor than it once professed. A treat and inspiration was the address of Sidney S. George, state commander of the American Legion, who spoke before the meeting spon sored by the Lions club and the lo post, American Legion, at the Chris tian church yesterday noon. A deep er comprehension of the aims and ideals of the great organization of veterans of the World war could not help but have been obtained by all who heard him. Student Fire Drills Conducted at School Students of the Heppner high and grade schools organized for fire drills last week to provide for the children's safety at times of emer gency by a quick and orderly meth od of exit from the building. Monitors have been . appointed to hold open the outside doora and to assist students coming down the chute, to their feet. The front doors, end doors and the safety chute are all used to provide for a speedy emptying of the building one min ute and seven seconds after the sounding of the first bell. Drills will be held at approximately two weeks ppart, but enough variation will be allowed so that they will be given at unexpected times, thus providing the greatest benefit NOTICE TO CREDITORS. SUMMONS FOB PUBLICATION ZN FORECLOSURE OF TAX LIEN. IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE STATE OF OREGON FOR MORROW COUNTY. Geraldine Williamson, Plaintiff, vs. Oscar Satterwall, Defendant To Oscar Satterwall, the above named defendant IN THE NAME OF THE STATE OF OREGON: Tou are hereby notified that Geraldine Williamson, the holder of Certificate of Delinquency numbered 1347 issued on the 1st day of February, 1928, by the Tax Collector of the County of Morrow, State of Oregon, for the amount of Thirty-five and 28-100 Dol lars, the same being the amount then due and delinquent for taxes for the year 1923, together with penalty, inter est and costs thereon upon the real property assessed to you, of which you are the owner as appears of record, situated In said County and State, and particularly bounded and described as follows, to-wit: faith" He gave attention to the man who was being lowered from the upper story. Physicians diagnose the entire pa tient rather than merely look at one sore place. Sin was the basic trou- ble In the life of this physically help less man. He was cleansed first and then by the same divine power was enabled to rise and roll up the bed himself. As with forgiveness of sin, there was the Instantaneous and complete cure. The crowd gave God the glory rightly. The beneficence of Christ is also revealed in his general program. He purposed to share the Joy of service and its results with others. Indiv iduals were invited to join with Him in this work that the Father sent Him to accomplish. Levi, the tax collector, was a man of tremendous possibility and one day the abrupt command was given to him, "Follow me." Hated by men because of his office this man of affairs was invited to be one of the Twelve Apostles. A new name was given with the changed life and the Sunday School world is now spending six months in studying the Gospel that he wrote. Jesus was moved by possi bility, rather than by local preju dice, in calling Matthew as a co worker. It is reasonable to declare that when Matthew turned over his ac counts it was the first honest reck oning that had come to the Roman government. The break with the old life was formally announced at a banquet, which was open to "pub licans and sinners." While the Pharisees equally needed spiritual help, these outcasts would accept It. The critics that day were those who would not be found lifting even a "corner of the bed," when there was specific need. Jesus Is still saying to all of us, "Follow me"; for the world is In constant need of "Healing and Helping." To such service we are commissioned.
