Biological Survey
Cares for Wild Life
Saving the wild birds and animals
which are of use to the United
States is one of the big tasks of the
U. S. Biological Survey at Wash
ington. This branch of government
activity is under the Department
of Agriculture and is busy constant
ly with scientific experiments which
are of interest to those concerned
with the preservation of our wild
animals and birds. In writing of
some of the tasks performed by the
Survey, W. C. Henderson, associate
chief of the Bureau of Biological
Survey, says In the current issue of
the National Republic:
"There are very few people either
in the city or town or on the farm,
who do not enjoy the time spent in
the open, in surroundings of hills
and streams, forests, lakes and
meadows. All love our country's
'rocks and rills, and its woods and
templed hills,' and not the least of
these enjoyments is that produced
by the presence in these places of
the song and game birds, the deer
and other big-game mammals, and
the smaller and elusive fur bearers,
"Nor does it detract from the
beauty of the wonders of nature to
know that we are preserving the
wild birds, and animals for our con
tinued enjoyment and for the pleas
ure of future generations by meas
ures based upon scientific investi
gation. Our national Congress has
created a wild-life service of the
federal government to conduct the
necessary research and to apply
measures of conservation and con
trol. This agency 1b one of the
scientific bureaus of the Depart
ment of Agriculture, and is known
as the Bureau of Biological Sur
vey. "The Biological Survey serves the
man out of doors and the public
generally by studies of all phases of
our wild blrdB and four-footed ani
mals. It maintains refuges for their
perpetuation. It administers laws
designed to allow proper use and
enjoyment of this great natural re
source and at the same time to pre
vent such abuse as would bring the
various species to ultimate if not
speedy extermination. In coopera
tion with the states it undertakes
measures to control predatory and
other Injurious species.
"The individual states have sole
power to enact such laws as relate
to the hunting and trapping of non
migratory game and fur-bearers.
They cooperate, however, with the
federal authorities in regulating
the hunting of migratory birds.
"To obtain the fundamental In
formation necessary for a wise ad
ministration of our wild-life re
sources, biologists of the Survey for
the past forty-four years have been
collecting authentic information re
garding the life habits of birds and

mammals; their geographic distri
bution and migration; their natural
requirements as to food, water and
nesting areas; and their relations
to the farmer, the orchardist and
the stockgrower.
This opens up a complex situa
tion, for every form of wild life re
quires food for its continued exist
ence, and In getting the food that
It has been accustomed to take for
untold generations, it is sure to
come into competition in some
places with farming and other in
dustrial activities. The Biological
Survey Is striving to protect the in
terests of both the wild life and of
the farmer and stokman, and
work for the preservation of the
valuable and harmless species of
our wild animals and birds."

railroads have their way at the final

Mr. Pollman has not been able

which he is affiliated because of ill
health. However, he keeps in con
stant touch with developments in
the livestock freight rate investiga
tion and is a strong advocate of

channels of distribution for live
stock, as evidenced by the follow
