A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but parent of all other virtues Cicero. Mean?, matt TEVIK TO ACT. K VIATION is past the experiment- al and joke stage, it naa De- come, and is becoming more and more, a vital factor in the business life of the nation. Commercial routes carrying mail and passengers now tap all the more populous sec tions of the country, and are fast being extended to the more isolated districts. The routes are going over towns that provide landing facili ties. Heppner should get busy and lay out at least an emergency neld. ine field now used by airplanes is haz ardous and does not meet govern ment requirements. It is not large enough and does not lay right A site for a field that will fill the requirements has been found by a committee from the local post Am erican Lesion, and no time should be lost in obtaining the same and fitting it up for an emergency field. When, and if, this is done the gov ernment stands ready to install a 2,000,000 candlepower beacon light at a cost of some $1,800, that will mark the field for night flyers, and the field will be marked on the offi cial government aviation map. Already two air mail routes pass in the close proximity of Heppner, and two more projected routes will intersect' the present routes very near here. There is no doubt, in fact practical assurance is given that they will pass directly over an emergency landing field if the same is provided. It is said that the gov ernment mail planes will go as far as 200 miles off their direct route to keep over emergency landing fields. An emergency landing field does not entail an extortionate expense for construction and maintenance. It may be, however, that the field would be run at a loss for some time. It is practically certain that the established routes will go over the towns that are the first to pro vide landing facilities, and once the routes are established there is little likelihood that they will be changed. If Heppner does not act immediate ly there is every probability that other towns will get in ahead of her and forestall the establishing of routes over here for quite a long time to come. When the railroads were being built over the country, it was the town that got the railroad that grew. Air routes in a few years will be as vital to a town's progress as the railroads once were. We are now entering into the faster era of air transportation and now is the time to act MEMORIAL DAY. SINCE la3t a day was set aside in honor of departed soldiers, the ranks of the greet war heroes have been thinned by the passing of Mar shal Foch. One of the great generals of all time, his brave spirit now belongs to eternity. Like many great gen erals, he espoused peace with all his might and main, yet proved a fierce and unrelenting warrior when struggling for a righteous cause. Significant was the coupling of his name with that of the Unknown Sol dier at the time of his death. Beau- JIXE BRIDES. THE month of marriages is here. Of course every month is a month of marriages, but June seems es pecially to abound with them, and there has always neen a auamonai halo of romance over marriages that take place in June. That is as it should be, for June is in itself beautiful and romantic, the glorious month of roses. What better time to wed than when the fields are abloom with flowers, and the sweet song of birds is in the air? What better month for honey moons .' Young man young lady if you are engaged or expect to be shortly why not seize the opportunity to make a June wedding of it? And while we are on the subject, let s not forget the brides of former vears. Remember those who mar ried in Junes of the past with tok ens of vour affection perhaps, in- rie.vi vour mother too was a "June Bride." TUNE IN There is a sweet symphony some where; tune in and get it Yes, that's it a sweet symphony some where; shift your dials until you find it, then sit back and let it into your soul; you will be made better by it. It's a sad fact that not every noise is a symphony. There are sloppy jazzes and melancholy dirges that afford no uplift whatever tune away from them. You have a right to the best there is. Aren't you keeping up a perfectly good receiv ing set? But you won t get the best in the world unless you tune in for it. The worst will din your ears if you don't tune it out; it will bore you to death and keep you looking sour while you live I am mighty careful of my receiv ing set. I feed it, clothe it, house it with jealous care; I never permit It to become rusty or dusty. I give it eight hours of sleep each night; I provide it with at least six hours of heartening toil every working day; that causes It to appreciate the symphonies that are here for the tuning In. If "static" bothers me, I turn my dials away from it. That's the only way to get rid of it. When I see a sour, repellant face, I have to strug gle to keep from shouting; "get away from that static!" Then there's the ballyhoo the the peddlers that never lay off, even on Sunday in this commer cialized age. If I tire of them I tune 'em out There's often good music, though, along with a ped dlers' program. In fact, there is good In everything, as Shakespeare savs, if we just tune in for it If this world is to be made better for us, we must try being better ourselves and tune In for every thing that ennobles and enriches the soul. The conquering army of the Chal deans was all about Jerusalem. Al ready some of Judah had been de ported to Babylon. Zedekiah had been appointed king by Nebuchad nezzar but failed In his loyalty to that mighty chieftain. Soon Jeru salem fell and Zedekiah was taken to Babylon, but he never saw that city as he was blinded after being forced to witness the killing of his own sons. Jeremiah's voice did not meet with approval for he had predicted such an overthrow of the nation if they would not reform and live righteously . When the Inevitable was at hand the prophet advised ready submission to Nebuchadnez zar. In short It was to their Inter est to make the very most of a bad situation. One thing In particular was commanded and It was to avoid any effort to win out through an alliance with Egypt. Zedekiah did the very opposite. When the army of Egypt approached to aid Jeru salem Nebuchadnezzar raised the seige to overcome the new enemy. The lull in attack furnished op portunity for Jeremiah to start out for his home town, Anathoth. Then th loud talklne Pashur cried "Trea son" and declared that Jeremiah was deserting to the Chaldeans. For this, ready permission was obtained from Zedekiah to cast him Into a dungeon. The bottom was a moss of mire Into which the prophet sank NOTICE OF SHERIFF'S SALE. Ebed-melech was the hero of the hour. He was just a eunuch and a negro from Ethiopia but he had a heart equal to the best in any race. He made Jeremiah's misery his own concern and hasted to ob tain relief. The king was Impor tuned. Doubtless the worthy char acter of Jeremiah was reviewed and his past fidelity called to mind. This time the king acts more worthily than when he yielded to the princes who sought Jeremiah's hurt. "Take thirty men with thee," was his com mand. There must be guard enough to withstand any effort to the con trary that might be made by the princes. The way In which even a good deed is done is worthy of notice. Ebed-mclech is most thoughtful. The old man in the pit Is weak from his sufferings and the ropes used to lift him out would gall un der the arm pits, So this Ethio pian carefully lowers some old "rags and worn garments" to the very faithful prophet. He does not even throw them down lest they be soil ed by the mire that was all about. With all the (jentleness possible Jer emiah was brought to the surface and accorded better treatment. Just a little careful observation will do away with all race prejudice. When we begin to look for the good In others we cannot fall to see their excellencies, and these often put us to shame by comparison. Ebed melech outdid king Zedekiah.
