HEPPNER may congratulate her self with the fine style In which the district championship basket ball tournament went over here last week-end, and this without any un due display of egotism. Receipts surpassed all fondest expectations of those in charge; all bills were paid with a surplus to be distribu ted among the participating teams. This, of course, is as it should be. but it is not . the only gauge by which its success may be judged. Coaches of three visiting teams, and players from three others re quested that Heppner be made the permanent seat of the tournament This because they were so well pleased with Heppner's gymnasium, beyond doubt the best of its kind in the district Success can only be attributed to the fine cooperation given on every hand. The milestone is one of which Heppner may point with pride, and when it again becomes the turn of our little city to act as host to this major sports event or other events of a similar nature, there should be no question raised. PREACHERS WORK HARD. GIVE a thouhgt to your preacher. He is a hard working man. During 1928, President Coolidge wrote 22 public speeches and mes sages to Congress. These required much concentra ted thought The industry of the President was commented on every where True, the feat was remark able and the work it necessitated heavy indeed. But give a thought . to your preacher. During 1928 he wrote 52 sermons. Each time the congregation ex pected something new and true of him something they hadn't heard before, couched elegantly, phrased interestingly. This comparison in no way de tracts from the importance of the messages delivered by Coolidge and our sincere admiration for his hard work and his courage in facing the arduous, tasks of preparation for these messages of such world-wide importance. We only make the comparison to picture to you vividly the giant task that is required of every preacher, poor or rich, obscure or famous, of every denomination, throughout the length and breadth of the land. These many bringers of light cer tainly deserve to have their church es well filled and to have the utmost attention paid to what they have to say. A HERO OF SCIENCE. THERE are all kinds of heroes, A and not all of them are soldiers or sailors. Some of the bravest, kindest spirits were those that could be described as soldiers of science. Men who went down battling . against disease and unhappiness and death. Soldiers of peace, ra ther than soldiers of war, great indeed have been their achieve ments. One of these men has recently passed away Dr. Joseph Goldberg er, a member of the staff of the United States Health Service, who specialized in combatting epidemics in southern areas. Stricken with yellow fever, ty phus fever and other lethal mal adies as the direct result of his work, he lived to reveal how such diseases could be prevented and cured. There is not a chemical atom in man's physical body that can be destroyed, save by the All-wise Be ing who created it. For that mat ter, nothing that is in or upon this earth can be annihilated, save by its Creator. Suppose I burn this sheet of pa per, on which I am putting these thoughts; a few particles of ash will remain. But, have I destroyed anything? Nothing except the form of matter, and mere form is not substance. I have simply dispersed a few atoms, which were clinging to each other, in conformity with fixed laws through which Man may operate, but over which he has no control. of pellagra, and his long studies demonstrated how that dread dis ease could be eliminated. Now Dr. Goldberger is dead, leav ing little money for his family. Leg islation has been urged to provide a pension for his family now that his comparatively small salary has stopped. We are in favor of this legislation, and of steps being tak en to protect the families and cher ish the memories of all of our Soldiers of Science. flubltr pinion ONE INTERESTED TAXPAYER. To the Editor Gazette Times: I am presuming that yours is the official paper of our county, then why is it that we never see pub lished the proceedings of the coun ty court? As I understand the offi cial paper, it is the method to keep the people informed as to how their money is being spent. And I for one, if the court Is playing football Family Standing It is absolutely the same when a charge of gunpowder is exploded not a single particle of matter is destroyed; it is merely a process of changing the chemical position and intimacy of the chemicals in the combination known to us as gun powder. So with man's body. It may cease to function and proceed to disin tegration, when what we call death comes. But not one atom of the body is lost or destroyed. Each chemical element floats back into its original position where it may do service in some other body. It's a sublime thought! These particles composing my body and yours are as old as earth itself. They are absolutely indestructible. When we are through with them, some other bodies will get them for they will endure forever, at the pleasure of the God who made them. The soul, the life? Where else but back to the source from which it came, as do the other units of this body of ours? with our hard earned dollars, would at least like to know in what direc tion it is being kicked. And again some few years ago, the legislature increased the salary of the county judge, so that he could be In the ollice at all legal office hours, so that when we wait there on busi ness or for information, we could get it; but now we find the judge out and not even a "Gone to the Ranch" sign on the door. Why is this condition allowed to exist? A TAXPAYER. L LEGAL NOTICES SUMMONS. IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE STATE OF OREGON FOR MORROW COUNTY. He taught that people who became penitent be cause of their sins and purposed to live a different life should give pub lic testimony thereto as they re ceived the rite of Baptism, which would signify this Inward working of grace. The Old Testament has many references to the use of water in symbolic cleansing. Jesus, com ing from Nuzarcth, sought this Baptism, not that He had commit ted any sin, hut that He might thus formally tnkp our law place before Jehovah. The Lord's Supper was instituted just after the observance of the Jewish Passover In the upper room in Jerusalem. Unleavened bread was used as a symbol and also the cup, concerning which He said In invitation, "Drink ye all of It." The rich meaning is set forth by Paul In the passage from I Corinthians. This Scripture Is used by every Christian minister as he celebrates tills Sacrament. The symbolism brings to mind the body and blood of Jesus Christ, which were given in sacrifice on the cross. The min ister will break a piece of the bread and pour the grape Juice during the service. Prayer Is offered repeated ly, and particularly In setting these elements apart for this holy use. A very helpful book to give to any first communicant is "Coming to the Communion," by Rev. Charles R. Erdman, D.D. This Memorial Supper has also a promise and links between the As cension and the Second Advent, which is a truth to be believed by all Christians and not only by those who especially emphasize the Re turn of our Lord. Another name for this Supper Is Eucharist. .This means "Giving of thanks." Solem nity of. course Inheres in such a memorial and pledge, but it should also be rich with Joy because of the blessings that have been made pos sible. In the service the believer accepts what has been done for him and likewise pledges renewed and full obedience to hla Saviour, thereof is the 14th day of March, 1929. S. E.
