HEPPNER GAZETTE TIMES, HEPPNER, OREGON, THURSDAY, JUNE 21, 1928. PAGE FIVE Miss Gladys Benge, who has just been graduated from Whitman col lege at Walla Walla, left for the East Wednesday. Miss Benge goes as a delegate from her chapter to the Alpha Chi Omega national con vention at Mackinac Island, Mich igan. She has for the past year been president of the sorority which was granted its chapter to Alpha Chi Omega, national sorority, only in the spring. Mlsa Benge plana to remain In the East for the summer, taking up a course in zoology at Northwestern university, Evanston, Illinois. In their report to Judge Fee on Friday, the grand jury stated that they had found six true bills, and one not true bill as their work of Investigation for the three days they were In session. Five of the true bills were secret, awaiting the apprehension of the parties indict ed, and one, that of Leo Ohms, held on the charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, was docketed at this time. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hampton arriv ed at Heppner on Friday from their home at Long Beach, Calif., and visited for a day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Cox. , Mr. Hampton is a brother of Mrs. Cox, and he and his wife are making an automobile tour of the U. S., going east by the northern route and re turning late in the summer to their California home by the southern route. C. L. Gilliland, who has been brakeman on the branch line for several months, has taken a lay-off for the summer and will work out of Portland. He was joined here by Mrs. Gilliland and other mem bers of the family on Friday, who had driven up from Portland, and the family of Mr. Gilliland returned to their home In the city on Satur day. Harold R. Johnson, elected to the position of principal of Heppner high school for the coming year, has tendered his resignation, which has been accepted by the school board. Mr. Johnson will teach the coming year at North Bend, Ore gon, where he will be principal of the high Bchool. Frank W. Turner & Co. recently sold the Jack DeVore property near the schoolhouse to Mrs. Vida Stick les. The sale of the McRoberts property on the same street, which was recently purchased by L. E. Blsbee, was put over by the same company. Wm. Hcndrix was called to Hot Lake on Friday by the serious Ill ness of his brother, Lige Hendrix, of Homestead, Oregon, who under went a major operation on Thurs day. Mr. Hendrix had grave doubts for the recovery of his brother. Mrs. B. F. Duvall, of St Joseph, Mo., is visiting at the homes of her sons, Harry, Crockett and Ned Du vall in this county. She arrived last week and is now with Harry Duvall and family just north of Lex ington. Paul McDuffee arrived home on Saturday night from Oregon State college, Corvallls, where he has been a student during the past school year. He will spend the sum mer here. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Duvall and daughter, Miss Erma, were Hepp ner visitors Monday evening from their farm home near Lexington. Wat Rineheart and family of Amany, visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Case Sunday and Monday, being on an auto trip through this part of the state. They are relatives of the Case family. Mr. Rineheart also enjoyed a visit with his old-time schoolmates, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Minor, with whom he attended school In Salem. Judge Alger Fee was in the city for a short time on Friday from Pendleton, coming over to hear the report of the grand jury. He was accompanied by Mrs. Fee and they departed later In the day for the coast where the judge goes to join the Pendleton contingent of the Oregon National Guard. Miss Bernlce Sigsbee arrived home on Friday from Oakland, Cal., where she has been for the past year or more, and will visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. G. Sigsbee. Dr. F. E. Farrior departed for Portland on Sunday and has been in attendance at the meptlnc of the state dental association, held in the city the first four days of this week. Haying seems to be the chief occupation of the ranchers on Rhea and McKinney creeks at the pre sent. Wright Bros., Ray Wright, Nels Johnson and Ross Smith are deliv ering a bunch of lambs at Heppner this week. Rhea Creek Grange had a very enjoyable evening Saturday. Be cause of the busy season the at tendance was not as large as usual. Don't forget the H. E. C. meeting at Rhea Creek Grange hall Satur day, the 23rd. Stephens Bros, are taking their sheep to Top, where they expect to summer them. . Robert Burnside won the box of candy auctioned at Grange hall on Saturday night. BUILD THEM prey on the flocks during the sum mer season. In order to prove whether or not this theory Is true, the U. S. Biological Survey, having charge of extermination of preda tory animals, has hit upon the idea of tagging a certain number of the young coyotes captured, mark ing them for identification and then liberating them in the lower coun try. The tags bear the legend, "Notify U. S. Biological Survey, Portland, Ore.," and should anyone kill or capture one of the 25 animals that have been thus marked, they should report to the Portland office, stating where the animal was kill ed. Some of these coyotes have been tagged in Morrow county, and the others in different parts of the district. H. W. Dobyns of the Port land oflice, has been assisting with this work. He was in Heppner on Monday, en route to Prineville. He reported that Harold Ahalt of lone began work with the service on the first of June and will have the east ern part of Umatilla county. O. B. ROBERTSON ARRESTED. O. B. Robertson, ex-senator, prom inent politician, and well known in Condon, was arrested in Portland Wednesday on a charge brought by Mrs. Elsie Robertson, his wife, that he threatened to kill her on May 31, when she refused to live with him, according to a news dispatch yester day in a Portland daily paper.
