CLOSED DOORS.
There Is a sense In which we live
In a land of closed doors. Doors
that are closed to the message of
love and of salvation found in the
Word of God. And Jesus stands
without the door and knocks. He
Is knocking at "The Door of Tour
Heart" And that is the Sunday
evening topic at the Church of
Christ Morning subject "How
Are the Heathen Judged?" Bible
school and Christian Endeavor have
a welcome for all.

Next Sunday will be the third
Sunday of Lent and there will be
mass in the church in Heppner at
8:30, followed by a second mass in
lone at 10:30 in the home of Mr.
Paul O'Meara. All are invited to as
sist at these services. The pastor
will preach at each.
Next Sunday evening at 7:30 will
occur the usual devotions for each
Sunday. On Wednesday and Fri
day at the same hour will occur the
usual Lenten devotions. Lent be
ing a time of special prayer all
should profit thereby to the full. On
Wednesday and Friday mornings at
7:30 throughout the season of Lent
there wlil be special masses cele
brated. These extra devotions are
prescribed so that Christians may
reap great spiritual benefits to their
souls.
On Saturday morning at 8, there
will be a special mass celebrated
for the children who belong to the
different classes in Christian Doc
trine. On Monday and Tuesday of this
week, children preparing for their
first Holy Communion will attend
instructions in the rectory at 3 p. m.
Children who have made their first
Holy Communion and who are not
preparing for Confirmation will at
tend instructions in the rectory at
3:45 p. m. Children who are pre
paring for Confirmation will meet
in the rectory at 4:30 p- m.
Rev. Father Nesdale, O. M. Cap.,
of Hermiston, will hear confessions
on Friday evening, the eve of St
Patrick's Day, and also in the morn
ing of the feast day itself, prepara
tory to the high mass that will be
celebrated at 8; the Rev. Father
Nesdale will also preach the sermon
for the feast; Benediction of the
Blessed Sacrament will follow this
high mass.

No one can read the account and
doubt that Jesus very justly con
demned those Pharisees who observ
ed the little things and then claim
ed righteousness while neglecting
the things most worth while- But
we believe that they were no more
to be condemned than those of our
own day who aie pursuing a similar
course.
Here are some of the little things
which men ought to do but which
are of comparatively small import
ance after all. A man may pay his
debts and treat his family well, be
a good neighbor, and a moral man
and so forth without being at all
acceptable in the sight of God.
Why? Because these are simply to
keep us on good terms with our
fellow man.
What are the "weightier mat
ters"? In order to be acceptable
in the sight of God we must first of
all be on good terms with God. We
must be on good terms with our
fellow man and be sure but that
will take care of itself if we will
first get on good terms with God.
But how? And what of those
weighty matters? "Believe on the
Lord Jesus and thou shalt be sav
ed." Acts 16:30. "He that believeth
not the Son shall not see life." John
3:36. "Except ye believe that I am
He ye shall die in your sins." John
8:24. "He that believeth not shall
be condemned." Mark 16:16. "With
the heart man believeth unto right
eousness and with the mouth con-

demnation of the Pharisees as re
corded in the twenty-third chapter
of Matthew. He called them "hyp
ocrites," "fools" and "blind." He
said that their estimate of values
was absurd in the extreme. It was

Son of God is then regarded as a
weighty matter in the New Testa
ment scriptures and linked with
this is obedience to the commands
of Christ See one scripture out of
the many. II Thess. 1:8: "Render
ing vengeance to them that know
not God and obey not the gospel of
the Lord Jesus."
Believing and obeying the gospel
then are the weightier matters ne
glected by the self styled man. "Not
by deeds done in righteousness
which we did ourselves but accord
ing to his mercy he saved us by the
washing of water and the renewing
of the Holy Spirit" Titus 3:5. Those
then who depend upon their own
good deeds and refuse the offer of
mercy and pardon which can be
had through belief and obedience
will come to the Judgment as the
Pharisees of old condemned as cam
el swallower8, as fools and blind, as
having done the little things and
left undone the weightier matters
of God's word.
