When tt comes to any question of boosting for the best interests of Morrow county we can ever count our pro fessional men, lawyers, doctors, den tists and public officials among those ready to do their share. A word or two about these different men would here not be out of order. It. L. BENGE, COCNTY JUDGE. One of the leading characters in Morrow county business and politi cal life for many years, R. L. Benge holds the office of county judge. He Is a son of W. T. Lewis Benge, one of the west's early pioneers who settled as early as 1862 in the ter ritory on the other side of the Col umbia river, now a part of the state of Washington, in the neighborhoed of the today city of Walla Walla. The father died in 1872, the family keeping on the work he had started. In 1883 they migrated to the south side of 'the Columbia into the ter ritory now embraced by Morrow county and commenced farming op erations. They were successful and to their credit let it be said that they also well weathered all the storms and trying hard times of the eanly development period and came out on top. In his official capacity as county judge, we believe that he fills the duties of that Important office to the best of his ability and to the voice of his own conscience, believing that he is serving the best interests of the people of this coun ty. Judge Benge is also one of our real successful farmers. Just south of Heppner he owns a 1400 acre farm on which he reports an acre age production in wheat alone on an average of from 30 to 40 bushels per acre. The products of this farm have invariably carried off some of the prizes at the fairs and shows of the state. I W. BRIGGS, TREASURER. And there is Leon W. Briggs, our able county treasurar. The Morrow county court house would look as if old Gloom himself resided there without the smiling and pleasant countenance of Leon W. Briggs. Briggs is today a fixture. He has been ably and to the satisfaction of the most exacting of Our taxpayers, holding down this office for the past five years. He has been a resident of this district since 1872. He Is par ticularly well qualified to hold the position as long previous training, 28 years as city treasurer of Hepp ner, gave him the right auditing ex perience. His father, C. N. Briggs, is another that is numbered among this section's pioneers. GAY M. ANDERSON, CLERK. A man of the younger generation, an able man'ln his office, and a man full of energy Is Gay Anderson, our county clerk. He has been fulfilling the duties of this very important office since 1915, at which time a vacancy occurred and he was ap pointed to It However, his work and the absolute accuracy and sys tematic way in which he conducts the duties of the office soon became apparent to the taxpayers and he was elected again to the office with a big majority in 1924. Today at the age of 38 he has endeared him self to all of the people of this; county who expect him to rise to bigger heights in the future. Watch that boy grow, J. J. NYS, CITY ATTORNEY. Another booster for Morrow coun ty, an excellent citizen of Morrow county and an able man in his place as city attorney of Heppner is J. J. Nys. He has been well serv ing the city as fts attorney here since 1916. , - , He is a graduate originally of the Willamette University, class of 1911. He started his first legal practice at Salem, Oregon, where he prac ticed until 1913. During 1913 he opened offices at Heppner and has been identified with the life of this city and this section ever since. Mr. Nys is an Oregonian through and through. He was born in Marion county. We won't hold that against him as long as he has now definite ly and forever adopted Morrow county as the ideal place in which to live, to work and probably to die in. 3. J. WELLS, ASSESSOR. J. J. Wells, our county assessor, is averse to personal publicity but we do not feel that this issue would be incomplete without mention of him. Let us make it a plain, brief statement J. J. Wells has filled this office well for, the past 17 years and we hope that he will continue to serve. At this writing we know of no better man to fill the place. Mr. Wells is another of our home boys. His father, A. S. Wells, was one of the pioneer settlers of this district Mr. Wells also reports considerable success in his farming operations near Heppner. He owns a nice farm and one of the best places of this district near Heppner. W. L. MeCALEB. W. L. McCaleb is our county road master and those that are familiar with our excellent road system hardly need any introduction to him. He has proved his worth. He knows his "onions." He has been serving in this capacity since 1919 to the satisfaction of all. C. L. SWEEK, ATTORNEY. C. L. Sweek has made a pronounc ed success in Jiis legal practice in this county. He conducts a law office, general practice in Morrow county with offices in the First Na tional bank building of Heppner. C. L, Sweek is a graduate of the University of Michigan, class of 1913, and was first admitted to the bar in that state In 1913. He came to this section soon after and form ed a partnership with C. E. Wood son, for many years a prominent lo cal attorney. Mr. Woodson died in 192H leaving the cares of this office and the continuation of the work on the shoulders of Mr. Sweek who has well carried on since. In the political field here also he has been quite active. Always a staunch re publican he has been well serving as chairman of the republican coun ty central committee. DR. E. E. BAIRD. Dr. E. E. Baird, a graduate of North Pacific University, class of 1925, and now practicing dentistry at Heppner is fast making a name for himself as a man who well knows every angle of his chosen profession. He opened offices in the Case Apartment house building In December of 1927. He has today one pf the, best equipped dental par lors in the west and his clientele is ever growing. And Morrow county gained another progressive booster when Dr. Baird decided to locate here. Watch him grow with us. A. D. McMURDO, M. D. And by no means let us overlook prominent mention of Doctor A. D. McMurdo, prominent local physi cian and surgeon. Doctor McMur do first located at Heppner in ,1913. His work soon won for him recogni tion and today he has an unusually large practice numbering among his clientele people from all parts of this county. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia, class of 1909. In 1912 he started his prac tice on the west coast first locating at Portland. Seeing the opportun ities for his work afforded in Mor row county he removed to this sec tion in 1913. Doctor McMurdo is fast making a name for himself and the profession he represents in this district F. B. NICKERSON, ABSTRAC TOR. The Morrow County Abstract company has the only reliable set of books in the county. If you want to know anything positive and def inite regarding Morrow county real estate, we advise you to get in touch with the Morrow County Ab stract company and F. B. Nicker son, its operator. Mr. Nickerson took over the af fairs of this concern two years ago after eighteen years of previous ex perience in the same line of work in California. And another word or two about him personally would not be amiss. He is a great booster far and a great believer in Morrow county now and forever. This is his adopted home and he will never be found wanting when it comes to working for our mutual interests. F. E. FARRIOR, DENTIST. And we came near to overlooking the favorable mention of Dr. F. E. Farrior, who conducts modern, up-to-date and well equipped dental parlors in the Odd Fellows building at Heppner. Dr. Farrior has been practising successfully here for the past nine years. . In the profession he is known as a particular authority on dental work. In this county he has a host of friends and patrons who have had occasion to have Dr. Farrior look after their own and their fam ily's dental work. Dr. Farrior Is one of the West's best boosters. Ht is a graduate of North Pacific Den tal college of Portland, class of '19. WELLS BARBER SHOP. And when it comes to good bar ber service and tonsorial work in general we can recommend no bet ter shop in the county than the one conducted at Heppner by Richard Wells. Above all else he lives up to the strict state laws regarding sanitation, one of the most import- ABARGAIN in CITY PROPERTY Must Be Sold THE ELIZABETH SMITH ESTATE Fine Residence and Four Lots.
