PAGE SIX HEPPNER GAZETTE TIMES, HEPPNER, OREGON, THURSDAY, NOV. 17, 1927, Oregon Agricultural College, Cor vallis, Nov. 14 PRUNES. Latest of ficial information indicates that the French prune crop will be six or sev en million pounds less than estimat ed earlier in the year. Prices on large sizes have advanced materially 40-45s (Fench sizes) in 27-lb. cases being quoted on October 18 at 22.46 a hundred pounds compared to $7.25 for 70-75s. GRAIN. The grain market was generally steady with coarse grains tending to go higher. Heavy offer ings of Canadian wheat were a weak ening factor but estimates placed the Canadian crop 14 million bushels lower and the Italian crop about 12.6 million bushels below earlier esti mates. Conditions in the southern hemisphere were reported more fav orable. Offerings of high protein wheat in domestic markets were urn ited and premiums were advanced somewhat. Soft wheat was not quite so firm. Northwestern wheat mar kets were oversupplied with damp wheat and export competition at Van couver was strong. Western barley markets were dull but eastern mar kets were firmer. Corn strengthened on light receipts and unfavorable weather for harvest operations. FOODS. Feed markets have ad vanced as a result of cold weather which stimulated demand, together with some upward tendency of grain markets. POTATOES. Official estimates of the United States potato crop were advanced nearly 6 million bushels during October making the total ex pected production approximately 400 million bushels. This is 44 million bushels more than last year and 6 million more than the five-year aver age, but it must be remembered that nearly 22 million busels of the in crease over last year is represented by early and medium season pota toes which have already been market ed. The per capita supply of late potatoes is scarcely equal to the av erage amount, but the western states have relatively more than eastern sections. There is still time for re adjustment in the potato situation. LIVESTOCK. Absence of well fin ished steers forced prices up on lim ited arrivals of inbetween kinds in eastern markets last week and every thing followed the trend. The hog markets were erratic with most weak ness in the east. There was not much change in lamb prices although the market was unsettled. WOOL. Hand to mouth buying by mills caused the trade in raw wool to continue alow last week, but prices remained very firm and the foreign situation remained strong. TURKEYS. No. 1 dressed turkeys were quoted in San Francisco last week at 46-50 cents a pound. North Texas producers were reported receiv ing 28-29 cents for No. 1 and 20 cents for No. 2 turkeys, and South Texas growers 25-26 cents, live weight de- livered at dressing plants. 0. A. C. Home Pointers (From School of Home Economics) Braid rugs, rag carpets and hand- woven rugs are used to best advant age in cottages or "old-time" rooms. Rugs are more sanitary than carpets as they are easily removed from the floor for cleaning. In rooms subject to constant use, rugs having considerable, though not contrasting pattern, are best used as they do not show footprints or wear as do plain ones. In rooms having plain ruzs and hangings monotony is avoided by having upholstery with a pattern in the weave. Rugs with very large pattern are used in shall, corridorj or arge offices. If wide board floors are not hope lessly worn, staining and shellacing effective. If the cracks are too bad. they may be filled with putty, and then either painted or varnished. Jute-filled cretonne is a poor In vestment for curtains, as it gets soft damp climates and brittle in dry climates, causing it to fall apart. Scrim, voile and cotton etamine have warp and weft the same size. To test the material before buying, be sure you can pull threads either direction. It is some other material if you can't. Grenadine and marquisette have locked threads one way and the threads can be pulled in one direc tion only. Net has locked threads both ways, making it stronger than scrim, voile, cotton etamine, grena dine or marquisette. More light is let through French doors if the curtains are dropped "15 AUTUMN'S FOOD Rich .wholesome milk. Drink all yoa want. It good for yoa. Alfalfa Lawn Dairy WIGHTMAN BROS, Prop.
