HEPPNER GAZETTE TIMES, HEPPNER, OREGON, THURSDAY, NOV. 18, 1926. PAGE THREE lone High School Will Present Play Tomorrow "A Full House," the first lone High school play of the season, will be given at the lone gymnasium next Friday night, Nov. 19. A synopsis of the play reveals that Ned Pembroke, a reckless and wealthy youth, writes ardent love letterB to Vera Vernon, a show girl, who threat ens him with breach of promise. His attorney brother-in-law steals the let ters and then gets his hand bag mixed up with the grip of a burglar who had just stolen a valuable necklace from the mother of the indiscreet youth. Then follow the efforts of the crook to recover his plunder and the at tempted explanations of the attorney, a newlywed.'as incidents in the story of the play in which the swiftness of the action never halts for an instant. Not only are the situations scream ingly funny but the lines themselves hold a fund of humor at all times. The cast for the play includes 14 students as follows: Parks, an English servant Rood Eckleberry Susie, a maid Mildred Smith Marjorie Howell, a bride Doris Gunzel Miss Vinnecker, the aunt ' Katheryn Feldman Jean Carters, Marjorie's sister Arleta Farrens Nicholas King, a stranger Gene Engelman Ned Pembroke, on only ion Dave Head George Howell, a bridegroom - Frank Mason Dougherty, police sergeant ; Harold Kincaid Jim Mooney, a policeman , ' Alfred Balsiger Kearney, a policeman Richard Lundell Mrs. Fleming, owner of the apart ment Rosa Fletcher Vera Vernon, a show girl Fern Engelman Mrs. Pembroke, from Boston Ina Morgan CYRUS BENNETT DIES AT HOLLY. Heppner, Lexington, Ioaa Better Pay for Assessors Medford Mail-Tribune. The recent meeting of county asses sors in Medford emphasized the fact that their duties are among the most important in the administration of local government. The position de mands a high grade of discrimination, sound business judgment and unusual technical ability. A good assessor can do more to aid the prosperity of a community, and a poor assessor more to injure it, than any other of ficial on the county payroll. Jackson county is unusually fortun ate in having in J. B. Coleman one of the most capable assessors in the state. From what wo saw of the as sessors assembled here we should say the general ability of the incumbents in this state is high. But the assessors are notoriously ill paid. While salaries and wages in all other lines of work have doubled and trebled in the past decade, the assessors' salaries have remained un changed. One thing is certain, whele here and there an assessor may remain without any salary increase, few of them can be retained, on the present schedules. "All right, let them go," we hear Mr. Penny Wise exclaim, "we can get plenty of men willing to take the job." That's precisely the trouble. We can get plenty of men. But we can't get good men, and there is no posi tion so necessary to fill with a good man as the position of assessor. Mr. and Mrs. C. H, Latourell re turned on Monday from a tirp to the coaBt at Rockaway, where they spent a few days. Weather conditions were none too good, so Charley reports, thunder storms with lots of rain making it rather uncomfortable get ting around. Protect Your Own Future BY A SAFE DEPOSIT BOX.
