IF ACTION started at Monday's luncheon of the Heppner Lun cheon Club results in obtaining the goal aimed at. Heppner will he chosen for the site of the East ern Oregon Tuberculosis hospital, authorized by the voters of the state at the last election. That this is wholly within the realm of possibility is believed by the club members, who are starting to work enthusiastically. No more favorable climatic con ditions may be found anywhere in Eastern Oregon than prevail right here in Heppner for the success ful operation of a tuberculosis hos pital, our physicians believe. If this point holds to be the truth, and the site is secured that the club has in mind, don't be sur prised if we get the hospital. That the hospital would be an adjunct to our city goes without saying. We want it. We are go ing after it and if we all want it bad enough we will get it. Let's all get behind the luncheon club. No big amount of money need be expended in asking for the hospi tal, and if the club fails of its pur pose the state at large will at least have learned that Heppner is on the map. That the Heppner Luncheon club has been a force for good is indicated by two projects spon sored and put across by it in its few months of existence. Hepp ner has a golf course, and a grand stand at Rodeo field in testimony of its activity. After a summer of inactivity, the club held its first meeting of the fall on Monday. From reports of this meeting the organization will continue to be a factor in the future progress of the community. Eight Years After. "HEIGHT years ago a mad world J- celebrated its temporary re turn to reason in a mad manner. November 11, 1918, will be hard to forget For anyone who spent it either in a front trench grown all of a sudden oppressively quiet or on Main Street in an American town grown all of a sudden op pressively noisy. But the lessons November 11 1918, should have taught seem easy enough to forget. Looked at impassionately, the world seems but little nearer a lasting peace now than it was then. Universal brotherhood is yet only a dream When the Armistice was signed to end the greatest war the world had ever known, all nations looked to the United States with what amounted almost to reverence Today this attitude is changed Europe has gone so far as to nick name Uncle Sam the "Shylock" of nations. Our attitude toward Ett ropean nations has also undergone a change. Throughout the world, Armistice Day will be observed at public demonstrations where tributes will be paid those who gave thei lives in the World War. These demonstrations and these tributes are fitting. But they are only a slight return for the sacrifice these men made. A far more fitting tribute would be that advocated by a wise leader in another war our dedication to the task remaining before us. On this November 1 1, we should renew our obligation to the cause for which they died the cause of a universal and lasting peace, FOE 8ALE Residence property i Heppner. Reward, nll-4 DtFraitk Crane Says CONSIDER THE BACKGROUND BEHIND every mind is a background. Behind every overt deed and spoken word flows a mass of feelings, impulses, and ideas from which these concrete things are chosen. Men are hanged and otherwise punished for the actual deeds they accomplish; a more just method of judging human ity would be to take into consideration the whole background. Nobody can do this but the Cod who made men, and hence it is said that His thoughts are not as our thoughts. And that is the reason why perfect justice can be meted out only at the judgment seat on the last day. What a strange region is this background of one's self! There flow what strange ghost faces and inchoate deeds! What gusts of feeling, what streams of tendency, what lurking, buried seeds of hereditament! A certain part of us is known to the world and we consider that part to be ourselves, but behind this there is another part, out of which the visible is created. , Wild and satyr like lusts, holy longings, prickings of con science, bonds of obligation, remorseful faces from the past, rosy plans for the future all mingle in the strange phantasma goria behind the soul. Greater than any music that Wagner ever composed is the music that he dreamed, but could not express. Greater than any speech that a gifted orator has made are the speeches he thought of, but never made. Greater than any love which a man has expressed is that reservoir of love within him that has never been able to find expression. If we would know a man through and through, therefore, we must not only kn6w what he thinks and says overtly, but we must bore through the crust of this into those wells of feeling which have never come to the surface. Probably the background of any saint is as bad as that of any sinner, and possibly the background of a murderer might be as pure and holy as that of any of us.
