GETTING READY FOR
From State Board of Health.
The child who is ready to enter
schooi should be fit for the beat that
education can bring to him. The
child should be free from all handi
caps which may be prevented by in
Too often when a child begins
school, the teacher finds him handi
capped because he has been neglected
at home. Parents have failed to rec
ognize that they are accountable and
responsible for the proper develop
ment of their children. Children
should receive a thorough physical
and mental examination before be
ginning school. Slight defects, if dis
crvered, can be remedied before ser
ious or permanent injury develops.
Only a few weeks remain before the
schools open to receive their youth
ful charges. This furnishes ample
time for preparing the children for
school. Freedom from disease and
physical defects means greater effi
ciency and safety for our schools. A
thorough examination of your child,
preliminary to his entrance in school,
nay reveal defects, the correction of
which will give your child a fair
chance. Will your child be ready for
the opening of school?
You have undoubtedly purchased
school clothes, but how about his
h. alth? He should be In the best
possible condition to start the Bchool
year. Has he been given a thorough
physical going over, and have his
tteth been properly taken care of?
This fall some ten thousand children
will enter school in the state of Ore
gon. "75 of the children beginning

school will be found to havo physical
defects wnicn are correctable. If
these defects are neglected, they will
permanently handicap the child. Now
is the time to have these defects cor
rected. With the opening of each
Echool year, there occurs a certain
increase in the number of communi
cable diseases, as shown in the re
ports of the Oregon State Board of
Health. The child entering school is
in grave danger of these communica
ble diseases as he has not been ex
posed to them while at home. There
are preventive measures that will
render the child immune to many of
them. In order to give the child a
fair chance, he should be carefully
examined, all defects corrected, and
immunized against communicable dis
eases. Misses Leora and Etta Devin re
turned Saturday from Cuprum, Idaho,
where they enjoyed a visit at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Garland
in the mountains near that place.
The Misses Devin had a fine outing of
