PENDLETON EAST OREGONIAN. GEORGE F. MILTON, a news paper publisher of Chatan ooga, Tenn., has been making a trip through the west and upon his return he stopped off in Madi son, Wisconsin. That state is supposed to be violently opposed to the dry amendment. There if anywhere a politician seeking of fice should be safe in espousing the wet cause. Yet a circuit judge who did so was beaten by a two to one vote when he sought re election. His opponent had de clared himself a "dry" and he got the votes of a district in the very heart of Wisconsin. It is noticeable that the candi date who wishes to be elected al most always declares himself in favor of the dry amendment and for law enforcement. He may be a drinking man himself and not really in sympathy with the law. Yet he is ready to espouse the dry cause because he has observed it is political suicide not to do so. This is true in Oregon and it is true in other states. In the pres ent primary campaign every as pirant for a major office in Oregon has declared himself upon the dry side. No wet candidates appear save here and there some un known who evidently seeks pub licity. The formidable candidates are all on the other side and it is reasonable to assume they know which way the wind blows. The explanation is not hard to find. Prohibition is not effective as yet and everyone admits the fact. The law might be improved. Yet prohibition abolished the sa loon and it has reduced drunken ness. The worker's pay check is no longer cashed by some bartend er on Saturday night. The money goes to buy groceries and shoes for the children and movie theatre tickets. There are exceptions to this rule of course, but exceptions only prove the rule. The average man drinks less than he formerly did and he has more money for other purposes. Millions of people in other lines of business have prof ited by the change that was brot about and when they stop to think they know it. They are getting much of the money that was for merly spent over the bar and they will not vote to hurt their own pocketbooks. In Wisconsin Mr. Milton found the dairymen and those who deal in dairy products on the dry side. When there are no saloons people drink more milk drinks and eat more ice cream. Also they have more money with which to buy motor cars and gas oline. The economics of the sit uation works in behalf of the dry side. There is also the sentimental or moral side of the situation. The world is always on the upgrade, never in reverse. Mankind is get ting farther and farther away from the jungle no matter who thinks the opposite is true. The politi cian who is wise does not try to turn back the clock for it cannot be done. He tries to take the clean side of an issue for he knows that when people get down to bus iness they usually vote on that side, not on the other side. ' Most politicians are chary of the wet for the same reason the old Indian chief was opposed to making a cross when his name appeared on the dotted line. The Indian said he noted that whenever he did a thing of that sort he lost some, thing. Luther Burbank. LUTHER BURBANK, whose wizardry with plants won him an everlasting name in this world, died the other day, one writer says, "as one of the plants he nur tured might have died had it been subjected too harshly by the ele ments." Burbank, whose genius had made the world more beautiful, died in the midst of a battle with the world, so to speak a battle which really hastened his death. He called himself an "infidel." "The idea that a good God would send people to a burning hell is utterly damnable," he said. "My religion is a religion of love. I love everybody. I want everybody to be happy." His pronouncement that he was an "infidel" brought a storm of protests upon him. He sought vainly, at his age, to answer each critic and there were thousands of them. He clung to his con tention that there is no life be yond the grave. The controversy unnerved him and his strength failed in the crisis. And now the entire world lauds him, despite his religious convic tion, as a great scientist and a great and lovable man. PUBLIC FORUM Under this head will be published all communications to the Editor containing comment of public in terest. Such communications are welcome, bat must bear the writ er's signature. Signature will be withheld from publication if so desired. A WORD OF COMMENT ON VISIT ING DAY IN MORROW COUNTY SCHOOLS. Our superintendent of schools, Mrs. Helen M. Walker, has instituted a new custom in the history of our county system. Heretofore it has been cus tomary for a local institute to be held each spring in order that teachers might exchange ideas and secure new ones. This, however, has not proved alto gether satisfactory, inasmuch as con ditions have made it inconvenient or, in some cases, impossible for teach ers to reach the place where the in stitute was held. This year, Mrs. Wal ker decided to try a new plan and de cide from reports whether or not the same was successful. She sent out circulars to the teachers asking them to take a visiting day; i. e visit some other school in the county and ob serve the work for a whole day. On March 29 the lone, Heppner and Lexington schools were hosts to the rural teachers from the nearby dis tricts. Then again on April 15 the lone and Lexington teachers visited the Heppner school. Those who have expressed themselves have spoken very highly of the plan as instituted and the teachers who have visited feel wonderfully well repaid for the day spent observing different instruc tors' methods of teaching and have gained a great many valuable" helps with which to continue their work. In fact one usually gets that for which they seek earnestly. The teachers who wanted real, worth while assistance found the same by visiting teachers whom they knew were capable of giving demonstration of first class teaching. The writer visited one of the best eighth grades in Oregon and gained more informa tion and assistance during the five hours spent in that room than could have been secured in a week at a local institute. A TEACHER. ON THE SCOUT INVESTITURE. Those who did not attend the in vestiture service of the Boy Scouts on last Wednesday evening missed a very rare treat. The parents and ev eryone else interested in the boys were eligible to attend but there were very few present. A more worthy movement was nev er begun in our midst than that of the Scout organization and it is a pity more parents did not see the im pressive service and hear the splen did speeches made by Messrs. Bower, Burgess and Chas. Thomson. These boys are our citizens of to morrow and to them we owe our at tention and cooperation in making the best citizens possible. In addition as parents of the Scouts, let us add that we are extremely grateful to the B. P. O. E. lodge for their hospitality in tendering a feed and giving the use of their hall for the occasion.
