The district should have followed the course pursued by the editor's father some 25 years ago. A too well directed rock had laid low a big duck that belonged to a neighbor, and it was only a short time until the neighbor was on the front porch with Exhibit A in his hands and demanding payment. One dollar was handed as demanded, and the man started to leave with the duck in his hand. "Didn't I pay a dollar for that duck?" demanded dad. The neigh bor admitted that such was the case. "Very yell, then," was the respmse. "Give me my duck." Bi;t the irrigation' district has paid a big sum of money for en gineering, and, now that develop ment is not to proceed, the engi neer has all of the records and the taxpayers have nothing to show for it. It is possible that no more work will ever be done on this project. It may not be feasible but on that point there is a wide divergence of opinion. But the vast quantity of data that was gathered and paid for should be public property, and be avail able if the matter ever again comes up. The district has paid for what now appears to be a dead duck but they have nothing to show for their money. The Dalles Optim ist. As soon as Al Smith gets prohi bition repeal thru some Al the sec ond should attack the traffic laws, If saloons were established again and car drivers were permitted to run as fast as they pleased, an automatic elimination would soon solve a knotty problem. John D. would doubtless add to his ser vice by putting an undertaking parlor in the back end of his filling stations and traffic cops could get a job driving hearses. It looks like a repeal all around might end our troubles with dispatch. Pine Valley Herald. Women, Brains and Politics. RHETA CHILDE DORR, not ed writer, says that an out standing woman with brains has as much chance of getting into Congress as Trotsky has. "There are three women mem bers of Congress, two of whom are widows, elected by the same machine that controlled their hus bands," says the writer, who adds that "the same is true of the two women governors, one a widow, the other controlled by her hus band and his machine." Piling more fagots on the fire, this woman critic of her sex says she recently heard a speech in Congress that a high school girl wouldn't make. She also declares the same condition exists in local politics. All the women without brains, usually anti-suffragists and chosen by the bosses because the men know there is no real organ ization back of the. anti-suffra- gists. "Women are still being discrim inated against," concludes the wri ter, "though they think they are in politics," all of which may be true in degree, but is not in any way peculiar to the sex. There are many men who think they are in politics but who in reality are only tools of hidden power be hind the throne. Years of obser vation of nominations made from time to time at the command of man controlled machines here and there are quite conclusive proof of. that fact. And then the lover. Absent-minded, walking with a box of candy Under his arm, to see his loved one. Is struck by a taxi and hurtled to the ground. Next comes the gay young blood Out for his evening's entertainment, whom Sixty miles an hour lands forty years too soon Upon a slab In some unfriendly morgue. And then the banker, full of worldly pride and honors, Jay-walks across the street between two mighty deals of Jlnanct And wakes to find Saint Peter quizzing hlci. Next, the family man, with years upon him, Confused and Jostled In the crowd, " , Missteps, and dies amid thanksgiving That his last premium was paid up. And last, hoary age, tottering and feeble, Perhaps with crutch, or eye too dimmed with time, An easy victim for some selfish motorist. Sans care, sans thought, sans skill, sans everything but speed. Rheta Childe Dorr may be an out standing figure in the world of lit erature, she does not weigh heav ily as a political and economic an alyst. Whatever may be said of the standard of the women in po litical office it must be remember ed they are bound to be represent ative of the intelligence-and hon esty of those who place them in their posts. All such "dreams" appear as the quintescence of im agination when they first reach the public ear, but in these days of wonders one hesitates to pass judgment on the possible. The transmission of heat would not appear to the layman to be beyond human solution, for the vibratory theory is generally ac cepted. Light, heat, color and sound seem firmly established as first cousins if not holding closer relationship. The transfer of sound through the ether, which amazed the world only a few years ago is now accepted as part of the regular order of life. The transfer of the motion picture by radio is well along its way. Why I Am Not a Campbellite "Alexander Campbell was a great student and an indefatigueable work er," said Mr. Bower at the church of Christ Sunday night. "He wrote a great deal, debated all comers and traveled far and wide on horseback to preach the gospel. He was the logical successor of the great re fomers such as Luther, Calvin, Knox yvessly and others. If in his teach ings he advanced beyond these othe men it was only because coming af- terward, he was able to profit by thei CRUMBLY TEETH Where there is a tend ency to lime-deficiency, soft teeth or weak bones there is special need for I cod-liver oil. ST 1 misatkes. "Coming out of Catholicism the old er reformers advocated specific re forma whereas, Campbell advocated a return to the pattern of the New Testament church in every particu lar." In summing up his life, Mr. Bower said, "While Alexander Camp- bell deserved to rank among the very highest as a religious leader and teacher we are not to follow him or wear his name for the six reasons hereinafter stated. "First, because he was human. Hu man wisdom reached its highest peak with Solomon and Jesus is the only one who can claim higher wisdom which he did, saying of Himself, "Bo- hold a greater than Solomon is here.' In the second place Mr. Campbell Bad no authority. He had as much authority as any man (or woman), which is none whatever. If we wish authority for religion we must have a 'thus saith the Lord,' for Jesus said, All authority has been given onto me.' i "Again Mr. Campbell made mis takes. So did the earlier reformers and se. do all men. So has every philosopher and human teacher. Je sus is the only one of whom it can truthfully be said, 'He hath done all things well.' "Looking further into the matter we notice that Campbell did tnat found the church. In common with all the other reformers he did not even desire to. He tried earnestly to point out to men the original church, the church of the New Testament. He advocated the dropping of all hu man names and of every addition to the church as spoken of in the scrip tures. But Jesus is the founder of the church for he said, (after Peter confessed him to be the Christ, 'Up on this rock I will build my church and the gates of Hades Bhall not prevail against it.' ' "In the next place Mr. Campbell Is dead and how futile to follow one whose body has returned to the earth as it was and whose spirit can not help us. Nay rather, we follow Jesus who, seated at the right hand of God 'ever liveth to make intercession for us.' "Finally if we are true to the. teaching of Campbell we will show it not by wearing his name or by fol lowing him but in following and wearing the name of his Savior and ours."
