CONDITIONS during the pres ent basketball season have brought to mind the crying need in Heppner for a gymnasium. Of ten before this cry has been heard and it was justified, but it fell on deaf ears. The time has now come when it can no longer be ignored. In the first place, the state edu cational requirement for a stand ard high school makes physical ed ucation compulsory. Heppner high' school is a standard high school, and Heppner people are proud of it. But under present conditions it is next to impossible to maintain a physical education department. At the present time, during the school year, our school is practically limited to two sports, football and baseball, and these can be had only because they are open air sports. Basketball is just now falling by the wayside for want of a suitable court. Basketball the past few years has been played in the fair pavil ion. But as anyone who has ever witnessed a game there on a cold night will immediately tell you, it is altogether unsuitable. It might suffice, however, if it were not that the floor is giving away, making it necessary that a new floor be laid. This complication of matters has practically forced the local school to give up basketball for the time being. But this is not even the half of it. What the building of a gym nasium would mean to the school in the extending of its physical education department, and in giv ing our young people that training which is recognizedly a first re quisite in making strong bodies, necessary to the making of strong minds, would in the first year of its operation far more than justify the expense incurred. Heppner has a first class high school ranking among the highest in academic work, but if the grad uates of her school are to success fully compete with graduates of other standard high schools, they must be given proper physical training. IN ANOTHER column of this issue will be found the state ment of candidacy of Jay H. Up ton for governor at the May pri maries, together with the platform on which he stands. We refer our readers to this articles and believe it should be given careful scrutiny. It is the policy of this paper to give every new candidate just rep resentation, and publication of their statements does not signify that we are personally supporting any particular one; when we do that we do it in this department. However, it should be the policy of every reader to study the plat forms of all candidates, to judge themselves how much of such ' platforms are hokum and how much bunkum, that they may properly exercise their franchise right when election day rolls round. Mr. Upton touches many vital matters of state government in his statement of candidacy which show him at least to be an apt student of state affairs. He is also frank and open in his state ment, showing the people of the state exactly where he stands. This is much in his favor, and will prob ably prove him a strong contender for gubernatorial honors. Our readers will do well to give Mr. Upton's platform a thorough reading- THIS winter is proving unique for its lack of snow; also for the absence of zero weather. Though we must have moisture for our crops, reports have it that the grain at present is holding its own, and is much hardier than it was when the big freeze struck it last year. Consequently farmers are resting fairly easy at present, placing their hope in a heavy fall of snow before spring, or good spring rains to make up for its ab sence. Eastern Oregon weather is too uncertain for any attempt at predicting now what next fall's harvest will yield, but let's be optimistic. THE wages of sin is death, or at least, much trouble. Stan ford White was killed long ago, his problems quickly solved by a young man from Pittsburgh. Now, Thaw's wife, for whom White was killed, drinks eight ounces of a poisonous mixture to kill herself. Clergymen will find in this a good text for a sermon that will not put the congregation to sleep. Some radical clergyman might even engage Evelyn Thaw to ap pear in his church as a living text or "sad example" if she survives. Henry Ward Beecher, in the Brooklyn pulpit, sold a mulatto girl at auction in old slavery days to emphasize a sermon against slavery. TOUR white men are accused 1 of forming a murder ring, that already has to its credit the deaths of twenty Osage Indians. Oil had made them rich, and in 1925, as in old Puritan days, it seemed to Christian white men wrong for Indians to have property. They killed them THEN, and they kill them NOW. But now it is illegal and the Grand Jury will see about them. ; Wiser white men don't murder Indians. They wait until the In dians get the money, then go to them- with bootleg whiskey, leave the whiskey ehind and come back with the money. "OLD will flow to the point VJ where it is most needed just as naturally as water will flow down hill. The economic law is inexorable. The call of high in terest always has and always must arrest attention so long as money is the symbol of labor. The closer nations come to' financial chaos the safer do they become, their se curity resting on the unfailing op eration of the law of self preser vation. America for example could not afford to see France reach a state of financial collapse. We must protect our loans and our investments across the seas. Pos sibly recognition of this fact is the underlying cause of French delay in the payment of her war debts. I Former Heppner Girl Winner in Essay Contest Sybil Jean Young, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvie Young, and formerly a pupil of the Heppner school, was n first prize winner in the Roosevelt school, 4th grade, at Modford recent ly in the essay contest on "Old Iron sides," sponsored by the Elks lodge of that city. In carrying off one of the first prizes, Sybil has been presented with the beautiful bronze medal, and her patents are justly proud of the hon or won by their little daughter. We are proud, too, because Sybil Jean began her work of getting an educa tion in the Heppner school, and is a native of this city, having removed to Medford early last season with her parents. IN THE NAME OF THE STATE OF OREGON: You are hereby required to appear and answer the complaint filed against you in the above entitled suit, on or before six weeks from the date of the first publication of this summons, and if you fail to appear and answer for want thereof, the plaintiff will apply to the Court for the relief prayed for in his complaint, to-wit: For a decree of the Court that the plaintiff is the owner in foe almple of the following described real prop erty in Morrow County, State of Ore gon, to-wit: The South half of Section 22; the Northeast quarter, the East half of the Northwest quarter, the Northwest quarter of the Northwest quarter, the Northeast quartor of the South west quarter of Section 27 in Town ship 1 South, Range 25, E. W. M ex cepting therefrom Fuller's Addition to the Town of Lexington, save tots numbered 1, 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10 of Block numbered 1 of said Fuller's Addition aforesaid, which aro not excepted from this description but aro speci fically included herein. Excepting from th above described lands the following, to-wit: "A parcel of land in the east half of Northeast quarter of Section 27, Township 1 South, Range 25 E. W. M., more particularly described as follows: Beginning at the quarter corner between Sections 26 and 27, Township 1 South, Rango 26, E. W. M,, thence North along Section line 1812 feet, to point of in tersection with east side of new coun ty road, thence following east side of County road South 39 degrees no minutes west 210 feet, thenco along east side of county road South 12 degrees 30 minutes West 643 feet. thence along east side of county roaa South 21 degrees 30 minutes West 654 feet, thence along east side of county road South 31 degrees 30 min utes West 614 feet, to point of inter section with east and west center section line of Section 27, thence east along said line 816 feet to place of beginning and containing 15.4 acres', more or less." In the County of Morrow and State of Oregon. That each of the above named de fendants be decreed to have no in terest in any of said lands, and for ever quieting the plaintiff's title to said lands against each of the above named defendants.
