(r-iSsiSi THE HEPPIIER TIMES. THURSDAY, MAR. 3, 1904. R0GRESSIV CONSUMPTION. Dr. Charles Conrad Abbott, whosa rork as a naturalist has made him nell known, returned from a fishing excursion not long since deeply im pressed with the cruelty that is an almost inevitable attendant upon living. Dr. Abbott caught on this excursion a pike, says the Philadel phia Record. It was a fish about iix inches long, and on opening it to clean it the angler found in its itomach a good sized mud minnow, lie examined the mud minnow in some amazement, and his hand felt something bulky inside it. Accord ingly he cut it open and found with in it a tiny pike. He felt now as they feel who study those Chinese puzzles that have ivory ball within ivory ball, and without hesitation he ripped open the little pike. Within it he found what he had ex pected to find another mud min now. Thus in one catch he had come upon a pike containing a min now that contained a pike that con tained a minnow. At The ChuroHea. Bate of Tennessee has often been urged to write a book of reminiscences, but now declares that he is too old to undertake such a task. The old gentleman served as a youth in the Mexican war and in the Confederate army he was reckoned one of the most intrepid men who ever wore the gray. From start to finish he was on the firing line, and as colonel of his regiment he won deathless fame on the bloody field of Shiloh. In that fight he had three horses killed under him, while he himself and four members of his family were simultaneously bleed ing. His heroism won for him the rank of a major general, and since those stormy days there has been no office that was too good for him in the opinion of the people of Ten- , nessee. - Miss Alice Roosevelt. This is what an English writer has to ay of Alice Roosevelt, whom he met at a Bmall party in Washing ton: "She is an attractive girl rath er than pretty, with tremendous high spirits and at times, I should say, a little excitable. It was homely affair, at which a lot youngsters were present, and we al knew one anotier pretty welJ, which may account for the little ebullitioD we were treated to. There was a good deal of jollity and romping, and Miss Roosevelt danced around the room in the gayest abandon ment, occasionally firing blank car tridges from a little gold trinket pistol which her father had given ner. These have been quite the fashion lately." Hungry John Dillon. T. P. O'Connor says that one of the funniest experiences that evei John Dillon had was while he was on a tour of this country. Mr. Dil lon is of very slight frame and rath er looks melancholy. He and Par- nell appeared on the same platform in an eastern city at a time when famine threatened Ireland. After the meeting the chairman took Mr Dillon by the hand and, with tear- in his eyes, said: "Ah, Mr. Dillon, when I heard Parnell speak I wa. not moved. There, I said to myself, is an aristocrat who knows nothing of suffering. But when you, Mr Dillon, got up I shed tears. There, I said to myself, is a man who ha known hunger. He has hunger in Lis face. Spring Houseeleanlng. If clergymen would warn men that those among them who art wicked and few of them are not will be doomed to live for all eter nity in a house that is being cleaned.. many would repent who could not be moved by threats of a lake ol fire. There is a beautiful hymn which tells us that "rum has ruin ed my happy home." But for every home made unhappy by the demon rum two have been ruined, at least pro tem., by spring cleaning.
