V THE HEPPHER TIMES. THURSDAY, FEB. 18, 19l CONTRARY UNIVERSITY " MEN. I heard a man say the other day , hat the university men were not on , Jus side of a certain question m ; fact, he eaid the college men are al ways on the contrary side on every question. This is probably true in the sense he meant, for it i3 the province of college men to judge in tentions and pretenses by ultimate results. When the final end, accord . ing to the experience of human wis dom, is 6ure to be bad wise men inust oppose the beginning. The universities have many times stood in opposition to the popular feeling of the time, but they have never . found their condemnation, in the final verdict of history. Only he who has Btudied the affairs of men critically, impartially, coldly, .can discover the real trend of forces in the movements of today. This the . university has means to do. It does ; not carry elections in fact, it has seldom tried to do so for the re sults of an election play a very small part in the evolution of democracy; not to carry elections, but rather to carry wisdom to the people; that is something worth doing. The words of experience which are wasted in . the noise of the hustings become po ; tent as the tumult passes by. Pres ident David Starr Jordan in Atlan . tic. Magnetic Persons. . Professor Murani, a distinguished Italian scientist, says that certain persons possess a strange magnetic or electric influence which produces very cunoua results. ' A few days ago while he wa3 at work on some electrical experiment one of his friends suddenly entered the room, and at the same moment the needle of his galvanometer moved to and fro very rapidly, lie was sure that his friend had in one of his pockets either a magnet or some other electrical instrument, and in order to convince him that he was mistaken his friend removed all bis clothes. To the professor's surprise the galvanometer continued to act lust as though a powerfu magnet was near it, and the closer his friend approached the more marked us action became. .More over, the front of the body acted on it in the same manner as the posi ' tire vole of a magnet and the back as a negative pole. Tkt Btakleaaaa Flaa. On one occasion a famous clergy-maa witnessed the tact of a stableman ia coaxing a recalcitrant colt Into his stall and soothing him until completely rec onciled. Having expressed his congrat ulations, he remarked with a touch of melancholy: "I wish I wuld get tha worklngmen of my parish Into church as easily aa you Kt your young horses Into their stalls, Thomas." "Well, sir," said Thomas, "I should think It rould be done, provldln you understands the nature of 'em an gives your mind to It" The cleric smiled. Thomas might manage horses, but worklngmen that was a different matter, - "Perhaps you'll think It over and let me know your method," he finally sug gested . , Thomas promised and, being appeal ed to a few days later, was ready with his "method." "And you think you have bit on a plan to get worklngmen to churcb. Thomas?" "I think so, sir." "And how would you 7" "Blindfold 'em an" back 'em In." said Thomas.
