Bear to the position of Advcr t sing Aaentif the System in the Northwest msde vacant by the recent retirement tf Mr. A. C. Jickson, whose tenure of thirty five years closed on March 1. Mr, Bear comes into this new responsibility more than ordinar ily well qualified, having been Mr. Jackson's Assistant for up wards of seventeen years. He is a native of Illinois , and follow ing his school studies, turned his attention to newspaper work. gaining his first experience in tiie "hfll box" of the composing room. Later he graduated into an all-round handy man for both the editorial and mechanical de partments of the country news paper, and regards that training as having been the foundation of his business activities in la. a life. Following a few years in the commercial atmosphere of St Lou is, Mo., he yielded to the lure of the West, and landed in Portland in 1910, finding immediate em ployment in the advertising work of the Union Pacific. U. S. VETERANS' BUREAU Application forms for Adjust ed Service Certificate loans are now available to World War Vet erans at any postoffice of Ore gon and this Regional District, according to information received by Kenneth L Cooper, Regional manager of the U. S. Veterans' Bureau from headquarters in Washington, D. C. Loans can be secured upon the execution of the war veteran's note and prop er identification after April 1. 1927. American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, D. A.V.ofW. W. I and Red Cross officials as well as postmasters have been author i.ed and instructed to assist in preparing these loan requests. Prospective borrowers i.re urg ed that loan requests be examined and mailed to the regional office of the Veterans Bureau, together with the Adjusted Service Cer tificate, rather than to secure per sonal contact with the Bureau Of fice, Sucn action will bring more projipt and satisfactory result than a visit to the government office. There is no advantage in personal contact wilt a Bureau rtpresentetive, pott mas teas and service organizations being qual in tea to assist war veterans in this matter. Mr. Cooper states too that there should be a definite need for the loan before the request is made. If a local bank is willing to make the loan, the Bureau should not be requested to do so.
