Wi II.MAM BURTON, to his In timates Ililll Burton, or oftener Ulllle Button, waa the adored aon of hi moth er. It waa she who had created th myth of hi feeble health, thus with holding him from the practice of law; though there were those of hi friend who held that HUM had becom a bar rtster merely by way of pasalng two mere plestsnt yesr at the university. Us was a good boy, hit mother would aay, with the Innocent convic tion that Dlllle't goodness glided hi Ineffectuuliiesa. But with It all be waa no fool, when he was not giving a representation of Bouts' band on a mouth-harp, Dllll could discuss, wltb enthusiasm, some dry-es-bone essay in a British review. Being a good boy, ha did not pine for rlotout compuuloni, but all of the force of hit tweet, shallow nature apent Itself In adoration of whatever girl bsppened to be at hand. Hhe need not necessarily be a pretty girl, Blllle Button wa an Idealist who could read besuty Into anything of the femi nine ahape. How he had escaped cap tivity wa a mystery, for Blllle waa lovable a well a loving; but by a sort of guileless gullefulnes b al- wsy managed to elude matrimony. With their modeat Income, the main tenance of a third party would have been an Inconvenience to both Blllle and hla mother. , I first met the pair, mother and aon, at the beach, where, to the murmur of moon kissed waves, Blllle wa war bling love songs to a winsome debu tante. It was unethical In Blllle'a eye to make love to two girl at once, but be continually felt the need of another girt to whom he might chant the praise of hi lady when the lady her self wa unattainable; hence his repu tation aa a flirt. It being difficult for the public to differentiate between what Blllle termed a 'rare friendship" and a love affair. But t who have played second fiddle to Blllle through many summers, can testify to bis sin-gte-heertednea. Last June, a I traveled toward a secluded vatley of the Blue Itldge, I thought, with a lonely pang, of Blllle, hla ardor had ao become a part of my vacation. I'pon arriving at the little mountain Inn, however, I wat rejoiced by the eight of a pair of (overt loung ing la the shadow of a patrlachal fir. The devoted pose was unmistakable. Blllle Buttons sgaln held th center of my stage. The leading lady thlt time wit t fascinating little Creole, who had fled from the heat of her Louisiana plan tatloo. "Rhe baa aa unpronounceable little French name, ao I call her Mollle my Mollle Bawn," ssld Blllle. when It waa time for me to be confided In. Tv made a Utile vera about her: la the goldea summertime, Mullle atole any heart from me Maw ehe flurlea la the crime, Calla It petty larceny. "Oh, Blllle. Blllle I what a fib artlat you are. You cribbed that out of an old magaslna. I know th womsn who wrote It" "Really, you are unkind," protested Blllle. "If I resd It, It wa longer age than I can remember. I thought rd written It myself." "But, a for your Mollle Bawa, why doa't you marry herT 8k I Irresist ible." "And she ha a sugar plsntatlon," supplemented Blllle, contentedly. "It's time you were settling down; you sr almost forty, aren't you, Bll lier "Almost forty, and a worse spoiled boy than I wa at twenty," hla tone wa bitter, "I've gray hairs and I've crow't feet, and still I sin nothing but Blllle Buttons." "Soon to be Mr. William Burton, the sugar king." Blllle, grinning foolishly, dropped the aore subject of bit InelTectualnesa. To one who had followed the In tricacies of Blllle' love-makings through th tessons, the difference In this case was significant. He wat bumblod, unaure of himself. The lit tle heiress plantation mad marriage with her possible, yet It was not for her money that Blllle would marry her, be waa genuinely and seriously In love, Aa hla devotion Increased to did bit telf-deprerlatlon, until his chivalrous notion that he should pro tect her against himself made It doubt ful whether be would ever ask her to marry him. Despite hit qualms be wat deliri ously happy. But Just at the lid lead lug on to fortune wet at Itt flow, It received a terrific check. The rural dellveryman had handed out hit lettert, for Blllle a tingle let ter In a determined hand. At sight of the writing be paled, after reading It he waa white to the Hps, with a look of fright In hla round childlike eyes. rretently he disappeared down th rhododendron walk. "I'm afrnld Mr. Burton has hsd bad newt," murmured the little Creole, troubled, wistful to thire bl sorrow with him. Night had fallen before Bllll re appeared to beckon me out to the shadow of the fir; "l'trtner, I'm In the deuce of a fix." Explanation wu long In coming, finally: "You remember my mother wa ao 111 In th spring? We bad a trained nurse for her, a Mis Mallnda Evan." 8li wu capable, and ar strong-minded. She looked Ilka a horse." "But horse ar benutlful, Bllll." "Not when they ere gaunt and raw- boned," miserably. "Then bow did you happen "She saved my mother's life," wltb despairing finality. "Poor little mother had nervous prostration, and wa to get on dying that I wat out of my wltt with anxiety. Then Mis Evsn cam to boss her Into getting well." "Stilt, I don't quite understand your obligation." "I waa ao eternally grateful, I told ber she wa an angel. I held her hand oftener than waa prudent. I wa so upset, seeT "But that wat weekt tgo." "I told ber If she wat ever near to tend for me. She's tent." "Where 1 the?" "Over lo Ashevllle nursing a bug." "Nurtlng what?" "A tubercular patient She will be whiter and starchier than ever, and smell of antiseptic." Every fiber In bl being cringed. "Blllle, the I a designing old maid. ah shan't have you I" I cried, In paa slonat protest. "You've wiggled out of worse scrapes than tills. Surely you aren't going?" 'I waa never up against a Mlsa Evans before. I'm afraid I am going." There waa a deadly suffocating qual ity In bl misery, before which argu ment shriveled la despair. The wom an must have hypnotised him. The next morning Blllle wat gone without a word o farewell A few weeks later a suspiciously heavy white envelope came to me. From Ita atel-clad contents, I learned of tli marriage at the Battery Park of Mlaa Mallnda Event and Mr. Wil liam Burton. Poor Blllle Buttons I Rare Animal Specimen Added to London "Zoo" A vary rare animal has recently ar rived at the Loudon Zoological gar dens In tb form of a pangolin, or scaly anteater. With the exception of a solltsry specimen which survived only two or three days, this extraordlnsry beaat baa not been represented In th cot' lecton for belt a century. It la difficult to believe that the pan golin la really a mammal, for, save on th underparts. Burke Given Credit for "Fourth Ettate" In this country there I really but one "estate." Legally, at leaat, no on cltlsen has a greater voice than an other In public affair. In Great Brit ain the "estate of the realm" ar three In number the lords spiritual. or the churchmen, the lords temporal, or the nobility, and the commons. The term "fourth eetste," ss applied to the newspsper prese In reference to Its political Influence, Is ssld to have originated with Edmund Burke, while peaking In the houae of commons. Or at least Csrlyle credited It to blm, though It doee not appear In Burke's published works. "Burke aald there were three estatea In parliament," wrot Carlyle In "Hero Worship," lecture five, "but In th reporters' gallery yonder there sat a fourth estate, more Important far than they all." Tata'f Opinion of Women Women will coon be the dominant sex, with men relegated to the orna mental but useful position of drones, predicts Nikola Tenia, famous Inven tor. WarningB Mad Vivid A gruesome poster has been Issued by the Johsnneeburg department of health, warning the people against plague, "Death," armed with a sickle and surrounded by rsys of the dying tun, la printed on a sheet of white psper, and underneath, In English and Dutch, la the warning to kill rata and mice. "Well, not exactly,' she replied. "but tlmnk heaven for th rumor! Tit Bit. PROTEINS NEEDED FOR DAIRY COWS Many dairymen overlook th fact that summer pastures supply an In- sufficient amount of protelna to enable dairy cow to give ber beat produc tion, according to the National Dairy council In advocating that torn grain ration be used at all times to supple ment grasses, even If alfalfa, clover, aoy beans or other legum crop are being pastured. Prof. W. J. rraser of the' University of Illinois baa made an Interesting statement to empbsslte this fact to dairymen. He referred to a pasture experiment made during twelve week of mid-summer by the Illinois experi ment station, and summarise th re sults thus: It would have required 80 acres of pasture to support an ordinary cow. If th cow la to graza over this area very week, she would bav to travel 80 mile a day and have a niuxxle two feet wide." Prof. J. J. Hooper of the Kentucky experiment station mad a similar ob servation, to determine bow. much grass a dairy cow required. He clipped aom grass with a pair of sheers and waa surprised at the area required to yield 100 pounds, the amount needed by a 1,000-pound cow giving 26 pounds of milk a day. "I bad to clip 800 square feet of blue grasa," state Professor Hooper, "the beads of wblcb stood 15 Inches high. All tb bladea were not this high, but the aeed bead were. I clipped aa cloae aa a eow would grate, and th grass waa good and thick." By cramming the grass into gunny sacks, Professor Hooper used three eacks, showing bow much grasa a cow must eat each day to produce even minimum amount of milk. Dairymen should not overlook the value of feeding their cheaper grain for Increased efficiency, according to the National Dairy council. A sur plus of corn during the winter baa mad this a desirable feed for dairy cows If supplemented by protein feeds, whO tb price paid for dairy prod uct bav been maintained by an In creasing demand for milk, butter, Ice cream and cheese. Not only doea the dairy farmer make a profit by thus marketing corn products, but ha la paid regularly throughout the year, and In addition still haa valuable fer tiliser with which to maintain the fer tility of bis land. Type and Equipment of Model Farm Milk House Year of study bare resulted la the development of a type of farm milk houae and equipment for the produc tion of clean and wholeeeme milk on the farm. Thla building, with Its cooler, storage tank, wasb sink, and ateaiuer, 1 on of tb essentials In th production of a wholesome food product through the "milk route." At tb request of the Smithsonian Insti tution In Washington, D. C a minia ture of a model farm milk house wilt be placed on exhibition there, where It will form a part of th mammoth display of vsrlous other factors af fecting tbe food and the health of the nation. Preliminary plana for the model have been drawn by the bureau of dairying of the United States De partment of Agriculture. It will be constructed and put In place by th department' office of exhibit. Feeding Grain to Cows Is Profitable Practice Doe It pay to feed grain to my cowar la a question which many farmera will be asking themselves. Results have been obtained In Kansas cow test association work clearly prov ing that It doea, even In a season of high feed prices, t'nder favorable conditions It la possible to produce an average of 100 pounds of fat year ly on a ration of good roughage such aa alfalfa, bay and atlnge. But with cow capable of producing more than thla It la vary questionable If It Is economical to limit the feed. Like a manufacturing plant, the dairy cow la only operating on th moat economl cal bastawhsn being run to her normal capacity. Remove Horns From Cattle Unless dairy animate are to be need for show purposes their horns should be removed. Oows with born endan ger each other and even their attend ante. Many a good udder haa been partially or totally apolled by a gouge from a sharp' horn. Bulla are much more easily and safely bandied when dehorned. The easiest way to remove horn I with caustic potash on th week-old call Clip th hair around th horn button and rub the apot about the else of a penny with the stick of caustic untiUL blood. aD Dears. Regularity With Cows Feeding, watering, milking and turn ing the cows out for exercise should be done ss regularly aa possible every day. Th time between feeding and milking morning and night should be divided aa evenly aa possible. Milking should be done as rapidly aa possible without being rough, and It la impor tant that the cows should be milked dry, becsuse milk remaining In the udder after the cows have been milked acta as a positive check upon future secretion. .
