Friday, April 16,1926 FOREST FIRES Incendiarism, smoking, and camp fires were the three princi pal caused of man caused fires within the national forests during 1925. Each year forest fires burn an area equivalent to a 10 mile strip reaching from New York City to Denver, and an area more than eight times the acreage of the French foiests destroyed or dam aged during th World War. The past, at least, is setitrt. Tbert is Ronton and Concord and Lexington and Banker Hill; andthere the? will remain forerer. Daniel Webster God who gare us lite, gave us liberty at the tame time. Thomas Jetierson O i in tne last lire years forest lire has burned-more or less destruc tively and with much repetition about 45,000,000 acres of land Less than 25,000,000 acres have been cut over in the same time. THE BEACON The scene was more beautiful far to the eye Than the day in its pride had arrayed it; The land breeze blew mild, and the azure-arched sky Looked pure as the spirit that made it. The murmur rose soft as I silently gazed On tne Bhadowy waves playful motion. From the dim distant hill, till the lighthouse fire blazed Like star in the midst of the ocean. No longer the joy of the sailor-boy's breast Was heerd in his wildly breathed numbers; The sea bird had flown to her wave girdled nest. The fisherman sunk to his slumbers. One moment I looked from the hill's gentle slope, All hushed was the billows' commotion, And o'er them the lighthouse looked lovely as hope - That star of life's tremulous ocian. The time is long past.and the scene is afar, Yet when my head rests on its pillow, Will memory sometimes rekindle the star That blaz.d on the breast of the billow. In life's closing hour, when the trembling soul flies And death stills the breasts last emotion, Ob, then may the leraph of mercy arise, Like a star on eternity's ocean. Anonymous MODIFICATION The stock argument used by the "wets" who have appeared before the senate iuvestigation committee is that the dry law shoulJ be modified because it cannot be enforced as it stands. But is that a val id argument? The trafic laws are not enforced eith er, shall they be repealed? Nor are the laws against robbery and murder entirely obeyed. Statistics show this country has twice as many murders in propor tion to population as has Italy. Are we to repeal the laws against murder because the present laws are being violated? BIBLE READING FOR THE WEEK t -A ! it ' A) W 1- , iril THE PRESIDENT AUTHORITY AND LAW The righteous authority of the depends for its sacntion upon its harmony withthe righteous author ity ot the Almighty. If this faith s set aside, the foudat ions of our in stitutions fail, the citizen isdepos from his high estate which he holds as amenable to a universal conscience, society reverts to a system o class and caste, and the government instead cf being im by reason from within is imposed by force from without. Freedom , and democracy would give way to despotism and slavery. I do not know of any adequate support for our form of government except that which comes from religion.
