Thu9 by aspirations lifted, ' By misgivingsdownward driven, Human hearts are tossed and drifted Midway between earth and heaven, H. W. Longfellow SONG Stay, stay at home, my heart aud rest; Home keeping hearts are ' happiest, For those that wander they know not where Are full of trouble and full of care; ' To stay at home is best. Weary and homesick and distressed. They wander east, they wander west, And are baffled and beaten and blown about , By the winds of the wilderness of doubt; To stay at home is best. Then stay at home, my heart, and rest; The bird is safest in it nest; O'er all that flutter their win gs and fly A hawk is hovering in the sky; To stay at home is best. H. W. Longfellow THE TAX QUESTION Treasury department estimates American People will pay for all kinds of taxes , direct and indi rect, the round sum of ten till ion dollars in the current fiscal year. This means that about one dol lar out of every seven of the na tional income goes for support of various forms of government federal, Btate, municipal and county. The tax burden cannot fco on increasing. It is doubtful whether it can be maintained at the pres ent rate without serious conse quences. Federal taxes are being pared from every angle and it is now up to the states, counties, and cities to follow the example. Condon Globe-Times Universal Conscription The American Lpgion we un derstand is standing for the idea of universal conscription of men money and goods. .They argue that there is rank justice in hold ing the dollar more sacred than the man and that if the soldiers must serve for $3U per month that the draft dodgers should not be permitted to profit by the soldiers absence from the compe titive field to the extent of from four to ten times the amount it the soldiers pay. We think the Legion is right. If the man may be seized for the national defense, why not the factory, or ship or railroad? i The time to mane this the law of the land is now. We understand that President Coolidge has declared himself as in favor of the principle involved In this proposed new departure. mil ujj U.I.JJ- MORGAN ITEMS The friends of II. 0. DEBT AND TAXES The majority in Congress has adopted a scheme for the reduct ion of taxes to the amount of $330,000.000 00 and the Democ ratic minority has come forward with proposals to still further re duce the tax bill of the nations by nearly $200, Ci ,0,000. 00. This last looks to us like a mere ges ture to catch votes. Indeed we think the whole tax reduction program has little else behind it. Tax-payers in the long run will pay more , not les"s by virtue of present tax reductions. Tax reduction now means post ponement of the final payment of th? national debt. Poapone mentof final payment means ad del interest which means more taxes. becomi Huguer.ot Colony I.ouiIuM-.l. ro. -lm wns tent hy Co IlKtijr, In VAA, with nij for the Hugue not colony fiMimliil dy Itlliault. at I'ort Iloj.il, 8.
