LEGAL TECHNICAUIIES It is reported that the govern ment has experienced a set back in its suit against Doheny, Fall et a1., on charges of conspiracy In connection with the Teapot Dome oil land leases. The presiding judge decided that the indictment was defect ive and that a legal officer of the government was in the room at the time the indictment was drawn. It was not shown that he prepared the indictment or in any way influenced the action of the gt and jury. . Apparently the same indictment would have been drawn and presented had the government representative not been present Nevertheless the judge quashes the indictment . and the matter must , again be referred to a grand jury. This means more delay and every day lessens the chances of successful prosecu tion. , This is not all, however, the constant recurance of such judi cial decisions weakens the conn det ee of the people in th integ rity of the courts -and leads them to feel that men and corpora tions of great wealth are abovt the law as far as the courts are concerned. ' The pettifoging quiblers, who render such decisions not only destroy publi confidence in them selves but undermine the found ations of the temple of justice. Million Dollar Motor Again Julius Dusevoir, in a new Star touring ear climbed Mt Nebo. one of the Pacific Coast's most famous hills, last week. "Motor cycles only have climbed it, and but a . few, with special front wheeles, have ever succeeded in going oyer the top. Failure in variably results in a dangerous kid, and many have been in- juredin making the backward skid. - The Mount Nebo hill is on the Umpqua nver from Roseburg, and the entire town of Rose burgbcsn witness any stunts tried on: the " hill. The climb rises sheer from the river bank and is 1100 feet in length; The steepest grade is said to be 77 percent. It is said also that if the automobile stops or breaks down, there is no alternative but .practically straight clitf and the river, below. i ,. .' , , International Harvester Prim rose tCream , Separators at -"Greatly" reduced - price?. 1 ' tin..a XT 1 M O .! Millions of people now travel by automobile to the re motest parts of this country reached by roads. Disease al ways follows the line of travel. Epidemics move from place to p'ace as infected people move. Until recenily it was possible to institute control measures that would effectively prevent the intrduction of infectious diseases into new territory, but with universal automobile traffic it has been necessary to enact new legislation governing the condi tion of tourists' campgrounds. I The health of the people of Ore gon is very important and we owe it to ourselves to tabe care of it In order to protect our selves we must provide first class sanitary conditions for the tour ist -Oregon State Board of Health. 1924 Breaks Record For Util ity Financing Public Jservice companies of the country made a record for all time in new financing for 1924. According to figures just complied, new capital received up to December 31, amounted to $1,325,600,827, not including an additional item of $204,039,000 for refunding purposes. This is at the rate of more than $3, 600,000 a day, compared with a rate of slightly more than $2,- 400,000 adsy during 1923. It would take 460 npeVm can dles to equal the illumination of the average electrically lighted home. Who Am I? I have scattered .bread crusts. tin cans, Sunday supplements and paper plates from the Caves in Southern Oregon to Monnt Baker in Northern Wasaington. I have hacked forest trees and left camptires burning from the California line to the Canadian border. I have hooked pears from Medford orchard and walnuts in the" Williamette Valley, "Rome Btauiies" trom beautiful Hood River Und "Delicious" apples from the broaJ Yakima valley. I have rolled rocks into the aapphire depts of Crater Lake and thrown tin cans into Lake Chelan. I have seen all, heard all and in my weak way, have managed to destroy much. A PUBLIC TRUST Hy The I'tvitldont, Calvin t'oollilg. J ' We hold the resources of our country as a trust. They ought to be used for the benefit of the present generation, , but they ought neither to be wasted nor destroyed. The generations to come also have a vested interest in them. They ought to be ad ministered for the benefit of the public. No monopoly should be permitted which would result in profiteering, nor on the other hand should these resources be indiscriminately bestowed upon those who'will unwisely permit them to be dissipated.. These great natural resources must be administered for the general welfare of all the people, both for the present and for the future. There must be both use and restoration. Association reports total receipts for the year ending Dec. 31', 1924 at $45,129.66 and expendi tures of $40,511.24 with a balance on hand of $4,618.42.
