July ,4 1924 The Editorial Desk On the fourth day ol July, one hundred and fo-tv eight years ago, the fathers of the republic auopted the Declaration of Inde pendence and pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to maintain it. Couched in the picturesque and forceful language of the greatest democrat of his time, that declaration was the express ion of the sentiment and purpose of a great people; a sentiment and . purpose Rtrong enough to carry them through toil and suffering, blood and fire, priva tion and battle from the skirmish of Lexington to the siege of Yorktown. That sentiment found an expression in the cold stark forms that hallowed many a bloody field and cheerless bivouac far"transcending that conveyed by the burning words of Jeffer son. The word of the declaration was the flash of the spark in the tinder, but the deed of war was the flame of the furnace seven times heated, in which was trans muted the ores of Colonial Inde pencence into the tempered steel of a new nationality. With a range of vision that far exceeded the mystic insight of prophecy, they laid broad and deep the foundations of the state that was to be. is yet to be and bequeathed to us, their children's children, a beritagnf glory, free dom and duty. On this anniver sary of our country's natai day we do well to ponder the words, and laud the deeds of the fathers. but we cannot truly honor them other than by the emulation of their deeds of duty and devotion. Thia great edifice of freedom, cemented in the blood of heroes andjeommitted to our keeping, requires for its preservation and enhancement a spirit in us like unto that of the men of old. Various agencies are urging care on the part of everybody to avoid forest fires. This is well but let us also remember that the carelessly thrwn match, the heedlesly dropped cigarette, the neglected rubbish pile or grass patch are a constant men ace to life and property in town and field as well as forest. Patriotism and Forest Fires With a three day holiday in sight for most, of our citizens, many will be planning to cele brate the Fourth of July bv camping or fishing trips into the forested regions which are so inviting at this time of year. In addition to seeking pleasure and recreation, it is well to re- memberjthat this is a day for patriotic thought, and for a con sideration of our national great ness, past, present and future. Forest economists have im pressed upon us the fact that our abundant forests and forest industries are one of the founda tion stones of our national great ness; that reforestation is necessary if we are to continue this national greatness; and that forest fires are the greatest enemy, both of the forest resource and of reforestation. Statistics show that from 70 to 90 percent of our forest fires Bre man caus-ed.-unnecessary. Foresters tell us that the woods aro abnormally dry and the fire hazard great this year. Every visitor to the forrested regions can make his patriotism practical this fourth of July by preventing fires,-by Dyttinareverv camp fire absolutely out; by breaking every match and pinch ing out every cigar or cigarette stub. All fire work should he Port of Portland Survey Complete Portland, Oregon, July 1. The records furnished the Traffic De partment of the Port of Portland by the U. S. Army Engineers of the survey of the mouth of the Columbia River show the effect of the dykes on the depth of the entrance channel. Soundings were taken at mean lower low water which is the lowest tide each day and the av erage of these tides taken showed that the water was 45 feet deep for a width of 1200 feet. This is an increase of a foot or more over the survey taken last year. These surveys are taken each year so that the sounding records con be kept up to date. Over a width of 4,0X) feet the depth is 44 feet, for 5.000 feet is 42 feet and for 7.200 feet the ilepth is 40 feet. With a depth of 40 feet for a width of, 7.200 feet the entrance channel of the Calumbia River 's one of the very best in the United States. Not only is there suffic ient depth of water; but the fog hour9 are less than at any other Pacific CoastVntranc. This is a big item in the wing of time as it is seldom nec xsarv for the vessels to wait or to run the risk necessary of entering during a fog. The!,depth of the river from the mouth to Portland is ulsr being improved and the dykee that have been built are doing away with the necessity of dredg ing after the spring freshet. Vessels such as the "Manulani" with her cargo of 440.000 bushels of wheat, or 13,200 tons, drawing 31.8 feet can go down the river without any cause for worry con cerning the depth of the river. The U. S. Cruiser Omaha came up the river in September without a pilot. Large cargoes are being carried by vessels leaving Portland and the record for the first six months of 1924 show an increase of 100 per cent in tonnage and 75 per cent in value over the same per iod in 1923. -Traffic Department. Port of Portland. Locals left at home. There is no place for them in the woods; the haz ard is too great and the risk unnecessary. Better than all the noise and temporary brill iance of pyrotechnical display are the woods preserved, green and alluring, for present and iuiure enjoyment. V. s. Konut iwrvic.
